My name is Mrs. Nicoulin. I teach Business and Exploring Careers for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. I have been at Otter Creek for 10 years. The class is part of the Related Arts curriculum. Before coming to Otter Creek I taught Science at Chauncey Rose. I’ve been married for 28 years, I have two kids, a granddaughter, and a couple of cats. I owned my own business for several years. I apply those skills I learned to the students.
In 6th grade the student learn about proper keyboarding techniques, creating and editing in Google Docs, and Google Slides. We also discuss the history of computers, the information processing cycle, and how to use the Internet safely and effectively.
The 7th grade curriculum consists of enhancing keyboarding skills, creating and editing Google Docs, Google Slides, and Google Sheets. We research and discuss the Indiana Career Pathways. We also discuss personal finance, including budgeting, opportunity costs and online banking.
The 8th grade Business & Exploring Careers class is a high school credit class. If the student receives a B- or better grade in both Business & FACS, they may be eligible to receive one high school credit. The curriculum focuses on enhancing keyboarding skills, creative writing, researching new technologies, and how to use technology effectively. The students also learn about types of business organizations, and the advantages and disadvantages of each. We also learn about entrepreneurship. During the nine weeks of class the students create a food truck business. They learn about target markets, branding their product, demographics, sales and profits.
We are very excited about this opportunity to teach 21st century skills to all of the students at Otter Creek Middle School.
