Flight 1 Annika Barnett finished in 2nd place

Flight 4 Mia Barnett finished in 2nd place

We are proud to announce that the state art competition was a success! Vermillion now has one in the record books for the first ever SD state Art Wars champion in ceramics – Brilie Mayer. Students also placed well in the following categories at the state art competition:

Painting (Watercolor): Niu Niu Zhang – 3^rd place
2 categories: Drawing (colored) and Printmaking: Gael Magana – 2^nd place
Photography: Brilie Mayer – 2^nd place

Curt Nelson has been named SDHSAA Boys Soccer Coach of the Year

Jim Dorman, Executive Director, for the SDHSAA has announced that VHS coach Curt Nelson has been named SDHSAA Boys Soccer Coach of the Year. This is voted on by the SDHSAA membership. Coach Nelson has been coaching Vermillion boys’ soccer since 2012. He started as a club and then transitioned boys’ soccer into a sanctioned sport in 2016. Congratulations, Coach Curt Nelson!

Art Competion Winners

Niu Niu Zhang – winning 3^rd place at State Art Wars competition in Rapid City.

Gael Magana (9th), Autumn Waters (12), Niu Niu Zhang (11), Brilie Mayer (11) all competed at the State Art wars competition in Rapid City.

Gael Magana – winning best of show in Class A division of the annual State Visual Arts competition in Rapid City. He also won first place in the drawing the category. Other winners (not pictured) from this competition: Sienna Lewis – 1^st Printmaking; 2^nd Sculpture.

Sienna Lewis (12), Adeline Raiche (10th), Autumn Waters (12), Niu Niu Zhang (11), Brilie Mayer (11) all competed at Wayne State College in their annual high school art competition. Niu Niu Zhang took best in show. Sienna Lewis and Brilie Mayer received honorable mentions.

Kirk Hogen Finalist for 2023 Coach of the Year

Kirk Hogen, Vermillion’s girls and boys golf coach has been named as a finalist for

the 2023 NHSACA Coach of the Year. To be considered for this award a nominee has

been determined to have outstanding longevity, win-loss record, championship years,

awards received and service to the coaching profession and athletes. Everyone is honored

at the National Awards Banquet held at the NHSACA 58^th annual conference in Lincoln, NE

on July 27^th. Best of Luck to coach Hogen!

*2017 ongoing discussion on the updates needed at Austin and Jolley Elementaries.

*Fall of 2020 stakeholder group developed to hold public meetings.

*Oct 5, 2021 voters support a $26M Bond to build a new elementary school. District to use capital outlay certificates and surplus dollars to cover increased costs.

*June 22, 2022 groundbreaking for new elementary school.

*July 2024 projected completion date.

Tanager Girls Golf Compete at State

The Lady Tanagers finished in 2^nd place overall with a two day score of 701. On the first day of competition the Tanagers scored a 354 and the second day improved to finish with a 347.

Individually all Lady Tanagers finished in the top 20.
