UHS: Weekly News and Notes

We have a few updates from UHS:

Emergency Drill Today

Our emergency drill today was successful. Because of the cooperation of all parties, including students, staff, and community partners, we were able to get the building evacuated and students dismissed relatively quickly. Typically, our goal is to get to full accountability within ten minutes of evacuation, and then to determine protocols within 30 minutes of any accountability. Sometimes an evacuation may take longer, and certainly we were able to anticipate needs like coats, waiting outdoors, etc. because of the planned nature of this exercise. Still, we found value in it and look forward to exploring additional ways to keep our community safe in the event of these unforeseen circumstances.
There are some areas that will need adjustment, some of which are in our control, such as better patterns for moving students from parking lot to buses, and some of which are not. For example, we received more than 200 calls for dismissal today, with many students being picked up well in advance of a drill. It definitely defeats the purpose of preparation when people decide to forego participating in a drill - some of whom were not necessarily accurate with their information. In addition, some parents entering the parking lot during the drill or while we were arranging dismissal were very difficult when being provided direction.
We have drills like these to prepare us for the real possibility of something happening, which, as we know, can happen at any time. It is unfortunate that some people feel compelled to not only do what they want but also be disrespectful to school staff who are simply trying to evaluate situations in case of a real-time problem. We share this understanding that many parents were not on campus and others followed direction just fine, but just to reiterate that we really do appreciate cooperation when we get it - and struggle to reconcile why, sometimes, we do not.

Science Olympiad and DECA Successes!

Congrats to Uxbridge DECA!! Seven Uxbridge students joined over 4,000 students, advisors, and business professionals for the 3-day conference where students competed in over 50 categories of marketing, hospitality, finance, and entrepreneurship. Neil Boyalla (Sports and Entertainment Marketing Series) was not only a finalist (one of the top 12 in his category) but he placed 4th overall qualifying him to compete this April at the International Career Development Conference (ICDC). All of the students worked hard all year and competed with the top students in the states. Last year we brought one person to SCDC and this year 7 represented Uxbridge.
