Curtis Junior High School is a part of the University Place School District. We currently serve a population of 1,000 students at grades eight and nine. CJH shares a large campus on Grandview Drive West with Curtis High School (grades 10-12) and our district headquarters. Curtis Junior High is named after George R. Curtis and opened in 1951. Thanks to the generous support of UP citizens, CJH was rebuilt in 2009 and now operates in a wonderful new facility.
Students at Curtis Junior High attend a six-period day. The 2020-2021 school year, we have provided an online learning model. Students begin classes, remotely, at 9:00 AM and are dismissed at 2:00 PM. We have a wide range of after school activities. Our Clubs meet online through Google Classroom. Intramural Athletics are being offered as we are able to implement these activities using appropriate social distancing and safety protocols.
CJHS has a long and proud tradition of academic excellence. Students in eighth grade focus their studies on Pre-Algebra or Algebra, English, Earth Science, Physical Education and United States History. More than half of these students are part of our Performing Arts program as members of the band, orchestra or choir. Many others take Art and Technology electives. In 9th grade, students study Geometry or Algebra, World History, Physical Science and English. We have over 300 students enrolled in Foreign Language study (Japanese, Spanish and French) and well over 200 in Performing Arts. We also offer a number of additional electives such as Technology, Physical Education, Leadership, NJROTC, Art and Drama.
