Swim Lesson Level Requirements



The following list of level requirements indicate the skills necessary to successfully pass and advance to the next level in the Curtis Aquatic Center's Swim Lesson Program.  All skills listed for a particular level MUST be demonstrated by the swimmer in order to advance to the next level. Please refer to the appropriate level below to see if your swimmer meets the proper requirements.

-The criteria listed below is provided for general knowledge purposes, final level placement/advancement will be determined by the Curtis Aquatic Center Staff. 



 

Level 1 - Student must demonstrate the following skills:

1.   Relaxed prone (starfish) float 15 seconds

2.   Five continuous bobs while blowing bubbles and holding on to edge

3.   Flutter kick holding on to instructor's thumb or noodle

4.   Back float (assistance only on beginning the back float)

5.   Open eyes under water and pickup ring held at arms length

Level 2 - Student must demonstrate the following skills:

1.   10 yards prone glide with flutter kick (approx. 4 lines)

2.   5 yards crawlstroke

3.   5 yards back kick

4.   Side breathing on wall with five consecutive breaths

5.   Open eyes under water and pick up a submerged object

 Level 3 - Student must demonstrate the following skills:

1.   Kick on stomach, roll to back (flip flops)

2.   15 yards of crawlstroke rolling to back to get a breath

3.   10 yards crawlstroke with side breathing

4.   10 yards beginners backstroke

5.   Jump into deep water, level off, return to wall on back

6.   Show use of reaching assists

 Level 4 - Student must demonstrate the following skills:

1.   25 yards crawlstroke (may roll to back last 15 yards)

2.   15 yards  backstroke

3.   Swim 15 yards in deep water, level off and swim back to edge

4.   Kneel down dive, level off, return to wall on back

 Level 5 - Student must demonstrate the following skills:

1.   25 yards crawlstroke with efficient breathing

2.   25 yards backstroke

3.   15 yards elementary backstroke kick

4.   Jump into deep water, swim 15 yards, change directions, swim halfway back, and roll to back to float for 30 seconds

5.   Dive into deep water

Level 6 - Student must demonstrate the following skills:

1.   50 yards crawlstroke

2.   50 yards  backstroke

3.   Tread water with eggbeater kick for 30 seconds

4.   Survival float for two minutes and roll to back and float for 30 seconds

5.   25 yards elementary backstroke, full stroke

6.   Safety:  show proper use of throwing assists

 Level 7 - Student must demonstrate the following skills:

1.   75 yards crawlstroke

2.   75 yards backstroke

3.   50 yards elementary backstroke

4.   25 yards breaststroke kick

5.   Safety:  Show proper use of rescue tubes

 Level 8 - Student must demonstrate the following skills:

1.   100 yards crawlstroke

2.   75 yards backstroke (improved efficiency)

3.   Survival float for three minutes

4.   Tread water for one minute

5.   25 yards breaststroke

6.   Safety:  Review proper use of rescue tubes

 Level 9 - Student must demonstrate the following skills:

1.   200 yards crawlstroke

2.   25 yards scissors kick

3.   Scull stroke for 10 yards

4.   50 yards breaststroke

5.   Butterfly kick for 25 yards

6.   Dive for brick and back to surface

 Level 10 - Student must demonstrate the following skills:

1.   300 yards crawlstroke

2.   100 yards breaststroke

3.   100 yards sidestroke

4.   Surface dive down five feet

5.   Racing dive

6.   25 yards butterfly

7.   Safety:  Disrobe and inflate clothes successfully while in the water
