Union Springs Art Students Achieve Excellence at NYS Scholastic Art Awards
The New York State Scholastic Art Awards is one of the most prestigious student art competitions in the country, serving as a platform to recognize exceptional young artists in grades 7-12. Part of the broader Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, which date back to 1923, the competition celebrates creativity across various mediums, from drawing and painting to ceramics and digital art. Winning works are evaluated by panels of esteemed artists, educators, and industry professionals based on originality, technical skill, and personal voice.
This year, Union Springs Central School District made an impressive mark, earning 11 awards, including six Gold Keys, four Silver Keys, and one Honorable Mention. The Gold Key is the highest regional honor, automatically advancing student work to the national level, where pieces are considered for prestigious awards, scholarships, and even exhibition opportunities in New York City.
Among this year’s honorees, Hannah McHenry (Grade 10) emerged as a standout, receiving three awards for her exceptional ceramic pieces. Her works, Toxic and Weight, earned Gold Keys, while Pulp Fiction received a Silver Key, showcasing her mastery in ceramics and glass.
Morgan Yorkey (Grade 11) was also recognized for her powerful ceramic work, Unity in Chains, which earned a Silver Key, highlighting her creativity and craftsmanship.
In the Drawing & Illustration category, Alex Batruch (Grade 12) secured a Gold Key for Pawn To D5, demonstrating his artistic prowess. Avery Koch (Grade 9) also claimed a Gold Key for Tackle, while Paige Smith (Grade 11) earned two Gold Keys for her compelling works, Atelophobia and Intrepid.
Other award recipients included Catherine Ciampi (Grade 11) (Open Your Eyes) and Ella Cuff (Grade 9) (Missing Pieces), who both earned Silver Keys for their exceptional illustrations. Additionally, Finleigh Biter (Grade 9) received an Honorable Mention for A Dog’s Purpose, further highlighting the breadth of talent among Union Springs students.
Union Springs art teacher Jason Charles expressed immense pride in his students' accomplishments, emphasizing the dedication and passion that went into their work.
"These students have poured countless hours into their artwork, pushing themselves creatively and technically. Their success at the Scholastic Art Awards is a testament to their hard work and artistic vision," Charles said. "To have so many students recognized at this level speaks volumes about the strength of our program and the talent within our school."
With six Gold Key winners moving on to the national competition, Union Springs artists will now compete for further honors, scholarships, and the opportunity to have their work displayed at the Carnegie Hall National Exhibition later this year.
The Scholastic Art Awards serve as a launchpad for many young artists, with past winners including renowned figures such as Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, and Stephen King. For the students of Union Springs, this recognition is not just an award—it is a stepping stone toward future artistic achievements.
Congratulations to all the award-winning artists for their dedication, creativity, and passion for the arts!
