Local Firefighters Teach Fire Safety at AJ During National Fire Prevention Week
Students at AJ Smith Elementary had a special visit from local firefighters last week as part of the school’s recognition of National Fire Prevention Week. The event focused on teaching students the essential skills needed to stay safe in case of a fire.
Firefighters from the Union Springs Fire Department, Aurelius Fire Department, Cayuga Fire Department, and Fleming Fire Department arrived at the school with fire trucks and other equipment, providing hands-on learning opportunities for students. The students were able to see firsthand the tools and gear firefighters use during an emergency and learn about the importance of fire prevention and safety.
“The kids were so excited to meet real firefighters and learn about what they do to protect our community,” said Principal of Special Programs Sheila LaDouce. “It’s an invaluable experience for them to not only learn these life-saving skills but to see how community members are dedicated to their safety.”
In addition to the fire safety drills, students had the chance to tour the fire trucks and ask questions about the firefighters' jobs. Teachers and staff expressed their gratitude for the firefighters' time and dedication to educating students on such an important topic.
National Fire Prevention Week, which ran from October 6 to 12 this year, is an annual event that educates the public on fire hazards and encourages families to practice fire safety. AJ Smith Elementary is proud to participate and equip its students with knowledge that could one day save their lives.
