The Paint for Positivity Club will have its very first meeting today, Thursday, September 7th, in Room 121 with Mrs. Rentz.  We will be cutting out and painting messages to put around the school.  

Athletic News:
-The girls' varsity soccer team would like to announce that Rachel Coulter, Jaylene Ferrabelo and Olivia Besthoff will be the captains for the 2017 season.  Our first game will be on Friday at home against Manchester.  Please come out and support us.

-Boys swimming will have a meeting this Friday after school in the Media Center.  All who want to participate in dry land this fall are welcome!

Model UN Meeting for New and Returning Students: If you have not yet registered for Model UN 2017, please join us for important information about this year’s exciting program. Please make every effort to attend the meeting on September 13 at 2:05pm in the back of the media center. If you have questions, please see Ms. Simcik in room 166.
 
Seeing footage and hearing stories about the devastation from Hurricane Harvey has left many of us counting our blessings and wondering how we can help. On Thursday morning, our school will try to fill a truck with donations to help victims in Houston. We are collecting household goods (blankets, air mattresses, batteries, flashlights), baby items (diapers, baby food, formula, bottles, clothes, wipes), non-perishable food (please nothing in glass and things that are easy to open, such as: water, Gatorade/Powerade, canned foods, cereal, peanut butter, jelly, granola bars, crackers, rice), clothing (sweatshirts, pants, new socks or underwear), and personal items (toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo/conditioner, body soap, deodorant, feminine products, toilet paper, razors). Donations will be accepted Wednesday and Thursday morning before 8am. Please bring them to the Main Office meeting room. If you have any questions, please see Mrs. Howard or an Interact officer for clarification.
 
Students interested in attending upcoming fall college fairs can check out posters hanging outside School Counseling or on the Programs and Events bulletin board in the Career Center.  The NEACAC college fair takes place this Sunday, September 10 at Western New England University in Springfield and the NACAC fair takes place the following Sunday, September 17 in Boston.
 
Any students interested in part-time work can see the Programs and Events bulletin board in the Career Center.  Currently posted positions include a dishwasher at the Red Onion restaurant and concessions or skate guards and instructors at South Windsor Arena.

The admissions staffs of Duke, Georgetown, Harvard, Penn, and Stanford will collaborate on an information session entitled "Exploring College Options" on Wednesday, September 27 at 7pm in Farmington.  Students interested in attending may register at www.exploringcollegeoptions.org.  An informational flyer is posted on the Programs and Events bulletin board in the Career Center.  
 
College visits to the Career Center start next week - be sure to check out the complete schedule of fall visits in Naviance.  New appointments are added daily.  Sign up to attend and see the Counseling office or Career Center for a pass.  
 
The National Honor Society is currently inviting eligible candidates to complete the selection process. If you are a junior or senior who has a cumulative, weighted GPA of 3.67, you should receive a letter in the mail notifying you of your candidacy. If you do not receive a letter but think you qualify, please see Mrs. Powell in Room 223. All eligible students should also attend the general body meeting on Wednesday, September 6th at 2:15pm in the cafeteria. Additional selection materials will be provided at that time. 
 
Are you interested in a career in law?  Do you have a flair for the dramatic?  Mock Trial is seeking new members to participate in the statewide competition.  Please stop by room 157 and talk to Mr. Zeuschner about joining Mock Trial.  We are looking to improve on our quarter finals finish last year and need you!

-The South Windsor Dance Team is hosting their fall tryouts for anyone interested in joining our team this year. Even if you play a fall sport, you can still be a part of the team for the winter season. Tryouts take place on September 6 from 3:15-5:00pm in the Rubber Room.  All necessary sports forms must be completed and turned in in order to tryout. Contact Coach Foley or any dance team member with questions. 

-South Windsor girls’ field hockey defeated Mercy in its preseason scrimmage. It was a tremendous team effort, and the team will come out just as strong in their away game against Newington on Friday, at 3:45pm.

The UCONN Early College Experience Courses for this year are Latin IV, Environmental Science, Marine Science and AP Physics 1.  ECE is a program where students take UConn classes while at SWHS, and receive college credit good at UConn as well as most every other college in the country.  College Credit is only received if you sign up correctly.  The LATE Application deadline is September 15th, and the LATE Enrollment deadline is September 29th. There is an extra $25 fee during this time period.  Please see UConn’s website or Mr. Wry for more details.

Attention seniors and juniors - several college visits to South Windsor High School are already booked and listed in Naviance.  Visits will start the week of September 11th.  Be sure to check out colleges you are interested in and sign up to meet with them while they are here.  This an excellent opportunity to learn about your options and make a great impression on the admissions representative who will likely read your application. See Mrs. Carty in the Career Center if you have any questions about this feature in Naviance or what to expect at a college visit.

The first meeting of South Windsor's Gay-Straight Alliance will be held on Monday, September 11th at 2:00 pm in Room 148.  Anyone interested in working to keep South Windsor a safe space for all individuals is invited to attend.   Past GSA members, especially leaders, need to check in with Mrs. Knapp as soon as possible if you have not already done so.  Anyone interested in working a table at the Activities Fair on Tuesday, September 5th, should see Ms. Knapp in Room 148 as soon as possible as well!

The goal is to have the passes be available for pick-up in Room 237 beginning on Thursday, September 7th.
