We have started our expedition on weather. In case study #1: What’s with the weather?, students will answer the question: How do scientists predict weather and find patterns? We have defined what weather is and came up with a list to describe different types of weather. We are starting to observe and document daily weather and will be moving into looking at forecasts and weather patterns. Case study #2: Sunbathing or Ice-skating?, will begin mid-March. Students will answer the question: How do I forecast and prepare for future weather? Students will practice making predictions based on weather patterns. For our final project, students will take turns giving a ‘school forecast’ over the intercom at the end of each day so all SELS students know the weather that is coming and how to dress for it.

Questions to Ask Your Child:
What tools do you use to measure weather?
What observations have you made about the weather and the weather patterns?
How do you forecast and prepare for the weather?

Highlights
Thank you for the wonderful Valentine’s and gifts for our Celebration of Empathy and Caring! I felt very loved and had a huge smile on my face reading all of the valentines!

Thank you Bear Walk donations! A letter went home right before break to introduce www.raz-kids.com. We are using this app in class as one of our reading centers. This is a wonderful website that gives kids access to eBooks and eQuizzes at their ‘just right’ reading level on any mobile device. Download the app and let your child start reading at home!

Etc.
Winter is still here! Please make sure your child comes to school with boots, jackets, snow pants, gloves, hats, etc. We go outside every chance we get and I want to make sure they are warm. Bring slippers to keep here over winter. The kids can take off their wet winter boots and keep their feet toasty warm.

Pet Loss https://truckeecharterschool.org/2016/04/07/pet-loss/ Thu, 07 Apr 2016 21:56:03 +0000 https://truckeecharterschool.org/?p=47488 Recently, it seems there have been a number of pet deaths in our SELS
community.

Our pets are family and when the time comes for them to leave us it is
heart wrenching.  And for many of our children, it is their first
experience with death.

Many parents have asked me if I have any suggestions for helping their
child work through their grief.

Since this is such a common experience, I thought it might be useful to
share some ideas with the community in case you find yourself in the middle
of this great loss.

How to help your children grieve the loss of a beloved pet:

1.  Normalize your child’s grief (as well as your own).  Repeat to your
child, as often as necessary,  that anything they are feeling is
appropriate and that everyone expresses there feelings in their own way.
There is no one “right” way to feel sad or grieve.   And there is no way to
tell how long that intense sadness will last.  It is different (and normal)
for everyone.

2.   Ask your child what they are going to miss the most about their pet.
It helps for them to talk about all their memories even if talking about
them makes them feel sad or cry.  Help them find avenues to release their
feelings.

3.  Put together a photo journal.  This can be a solo project or a big
family project.

Get an plain paper notebook and find some pictures of your pet.

Fill the notebook with pictures and memories.  At first this will be used
to help your child grieve.  But eventually it will turn into a beautiful
keepsake filled with wonderful memories.

4.  Help your child write their pet a goodbye letter thanking them for all
the things they gave you while they were alive.  This can include: cuddles,
outside play time; feelings of safety; and a good laugh at their antics….
just to name a few.

5.  Make a little alter for your pet  with pictures, his collar, some of
his favorite things when you are in the crux of the grief.  It’s  a great
place to sit to be present with the intense feelings and encourage it all
to come out.

Finally, I highly recommend the book Dog Heaven or Cat Heaven by Cynthia
Rylant. These books are beautiful tributes to our loving companions.  (I have one
of each in my office if you’d like to borrow it).

The most important thing is for children to realize that grief is a normal
part of life and learning how to express that grief is a life lesson that
will serve them well over and over again.

PTC Grant Funding: Process + Application https://truckeecharterschool.org/2016/02/01/ptc-grant-funding-process-application/ Mon, 01 Feb 2016 21:18:37 +0000 http://www.truckeecharterschool.org/?p=47838 The SELS PTC has established a Grant Program to provide access to funds that directly support the enhancement of student learning and teacher enrichment.

HISTORY
A primary function of the PTC is to raise and distribute funding; grant funding supports items that are generally outside the parameter of the SELS board, school budget, and alternative funding sources. This includes (but not limited to):

  • Classroom Support
  • Performing / Visual Arts
  •  Extracurricular Activities
  •  Individual Student Sponsorship
  • Community Development
  • Campus Improvement
  • Teacher Enrichment

PROGRAM POLICY
The PTC will distribute grants via three granting cycles per school year, each with a cap of 33% from the overarching Grant Account. Submission deadlines will be communicated at the beginning of each school year, if designated funds per grant cycle are not requested / distributed, they will roll into the next grant period.

CATEGORIES
There are two main categories and four subcategories for the Grant Program:

  1. Responsive Grant Program
    • Scholarships (designated for students experiencing financial hardship that limits participation in community programs and activities)
    • Crews (supports classroom activities)
    • School (supports school infrastructure and all-school enrichment)
    • Clubs (supports clubs and other extracurricular activities)

2. Teacher Enrichment (supports educator enrichment and self education)

PROCESS

  1. Complete the Funding Request form (with attachments as needed). The application can be downloaded here: PTC Funding Request Application and submitted to: ptc@truckeecharterschool.org
  2.  Submit by the following deadlines:
    • October 1
    • February 19
    • May 1
  3. Once the Funding Request form has been submitted, it will be reviewed at the following fund review meeting. You are encouraged to attend the meeting and present your request (bring supporters — parents, students, teachers).
  4. The application will be reviewed and approval status will be sent within two weeks following the meeting. The school Director will also review and approve to ensure there are no conflicts of interest. Final approval is at the discretion of the PTC executive committee.
  5. The approved project must be implemented and completed by the end of the school year (unless otherwise noted). Grant funds do not carry over into the next school year (May applications will be for summer funding OR fall semester – August through October). If the grant is not implemented and completed during the school year, any monies received for uncompleted grants must be refunded to the PTC and will be returned to the general fund.
