Our crew is in full swing with our spring expedition on ANATO-ME. We have covered three of the five major systems, the SKELETAL SYSTEM, the MUSCULAR SYSTEM, and the DIGESTIVE SYSTEM. We continue to learn about our amazing bodies and how the systems all connect and work together.

Questions to ask:
How many bones does the human body have?
Why do babies have more bones than adults?
What’s the longest bone in your body? The smallest?
What is the difference between Voluntary muscles and Involuntary muscles?
Name 3 types of muscles found in your body.
Where does digestion begin?
How long is the small intestine?
What is the purpose of the digestive system?

Fieldwork – Tahoe Forest Hospital:
Last month, the 2/3 crews visited the Operating Room at Tahoe Forest Hospital. After students put on scrubs, booties, masks, and head coverings, they were given a tour of the surgical wing. Our young surgeons performed a laproscopic procedure on a large squash, using a camera and tools to cut and remove seeds from the “patient.” Students also learned how surgeons fix broken bones with plates and rods using household tools such as drills, chisels, and hammers.

Terry Lee Wells Discovery Museum: In May, students will travel to Reno for a visit to the Discovery Museum with a tour of the Anatomy Exhibit. Thanks to all drivers making this fieldwork possible.

Overnight Adventure: Next month, our crew will have our spring campout at Lake Tahoe. Students will experience lifelong exercise by hiking some of Lake Tahoe’s most scenic trails. This fieldwork is meant to help students remain healthy and active to keep their bodies working properly. Details and Information packets will be sent home a few weeks prior to our trip.

Crew News:
Nevada County Library: The Welch Crew continues to visit the Nevada County Library in Truckee. We have two more visits before the end of the year. Be on the lookout for Summer Reading Program information to keep your child reading throughout the months of July and August. Prizes are awarded to students that continue to read throughout the program.

CAASP Testing: Third grade students will begin standardized testing May 16 – May 25. The testing window is 2 weeks long. While these tests are important, please emphasize to your child that the only expectation is for them to try their best and take their time. How can you help as a parent? Be sure your child gets a good night’s rest and a healthy breakfast during the two-week testing window. Also, do your best to avoid appointments during this time frame.

SELS News:

What was your favorite part of the Fire and Ice expedition?
What is your reading goal and what strategies are you using to reach it? Hint: CAFE goal
What will you be working on the second semester?
What will our new expedition be (following Ski-Skate Week)?

Crew News
Tahoe Donner Cross Country Skiing: Again we wish to thank the parent chaperones who have volunteered to drive on our cross country skiing days. Thank you for your flexibility and understanding when we have cancelled. Our number one priority is to keep the kids safe. No need to have 48 kids on the road in nasty weather. We will be sending out an updated google doc when dates are secured.

Planners and Book Bags: With all of the recent snow days, tacked onto a long break, it seems the kids have forgotten the routine of getting planners signed and participating in the book bag activities. We do our best with updating our “Week at a Glance” emails, but you will find other information within planners, and sometimes information specific to your child about his or her school day. The book bag activities are looked at as a homework alternative and as a way for your child to interact with new text in an artistic or creative way. Thank you for your attention to this matter and helping get them back on track.

Math Info: Be on the lookout for parent math information. In Next week’s folders you will find handouts to support your understanding of how your child learns math at SELS in 2nd and 3rd grade. Math is structured and taught in a very different manner than what parents and teachers were exposed to. For instance, we know it seems easiest to teach your child the standard algorithm of “carrying” or “borrowing” with addition and subtraction, but these concepts are not taught until late in 3rd grade. If you should ever have additional questions about math please let us know and we are happy to speak with you further. Thank you for supporting your child’s math education!

Math Fact Practice/Daily Reading: Due to the recent snow days, and unpredictable weather to come, please be sure to have your child practice their basic addition and subtraction facts, as well as daily reading. Practicing will only continue to support their ongoing school readiness.

Field work Chaperones: More winter adventures are on the horizon, and we need your support. We greatly prefer, and strongly suggest, that parents look to the fieldwork docs to sign up now rather than wait until the last minute. We understand that a shift in work schedules is necessary, but we don’t want to cancel any fieldwork due to a lack of sign-ups. Please see the following google docs to sign up for February fieldwork now, Thank you! Fieldwork Link

FIRE and ICE! This an exciting time for our crew as we put the final touches on our Victorian Holiday Historical Tour presentations and prepare for our tour dates in downtown Truckee. Students have worked hard on researching, writing, and practicing their tour information and will be ready to share their in-depth knowledge of historical buildings during Festive Fridays in downtown the first couple of weeks in December.

Victorian Holiday Historical Tour: As a final product for our Fire and Ice Expedition, both MinBorg and Welch crews will be hosting family, friends, and shoppers over the next couple of weeks leading historical tours of buildings along Commercial Row in downtown Truckee. Here is everything you need to know for the big event:

MinBorg Crew – Friday, December 9, 2016
Who: All crew members
What: Victorian Holiday Historical Tours
When: 4:30, 4:40, 4:50, 5:00
Where: Tours start at Bar of America (Corner of Donner Pass Road and Bridge Street)
Why: Service Learning to benefit downtown merchants during Festive Fridays

Questions of the Month:
What is the name of your historic building, or list your favorites?
Why is this building important in the history of Truckee?
What was the most interesting fact you learned about downtown Truckee in this expedition?

Best Pies celebration dinner: Following the historic tours, a pizza dinner will be served to all performers at Best Pies beginning at 5:00 p.m. Please join your child’s tour group while they eat. Family members may order additional food to eat at your own expense.

Richard Blair – Streets of Truckee expert: Local performer Richard Blair will be joining our crew on Thursday, December 8 to sing and share his love of Truckee, Boca, Hobart Mills, and Railroad songs with the ⅔ crews. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to hear Richard sing to our students.

Crew News
Library: Our library visits have been very enjoyable, and the kids are always excited to go. Please remember that if your child has an overdue book they will not be able to check out any books until the fine has been paid. We also ask that overdue fines be paid before our library visits rather than during our visits.

Winter Break: Our winter break is just around the corner. Two weeks of fun, family, and snow…hopefully. We also want to be sure some time is set aside for reading, writing about wintertime enjoyment, and if possible some front row math practice. We pick up right where we left off come January, and we want everyone to be prepared for that.

Indoor Shoes: Students are encouraged to bring indoor shoes (slippers, Vans, etc.) with a rubber sole to school to wear during class. Students may change out of their snow covered boots in the morning and wear dry shoes during class. This will save the carpets in our classroom and keep it dry while we are working on the floor during many activities in our crew.

Harvest of the Month:Cassie Hebel brought in some yummy sweet potatoes for the crew to try this month. Thanks for taking the time to introduce new foods to the students!

Celebration of Learning: C.O.L will take place Thursday, December 15th from 6:00-7:30pm. Since our students will be performing downtown December 9th, our C.O.L will be more of a showcase of their expedition work to date. A wonderful time for your child to share what they have learned in depth, and to teach you a thing or two about Truckee history. We look forward to seeing you!

Crew Highlights
Thank you to our library chaperones Maria Snideman and Luz Huerta, and downtown Truckee rehearsal chaperones Stacey Carr-Sick, Cassie Hebel, Kirsten Pekarek, Kim Bradley, Maria Snideman and Ester Meza. We appreciate and value your feedback, and support with seamless transitions.

We also wish to highlight Nov./Dec. Crew Peacekeepers: Litzy, Angus, and Teo. Something unique about Litzy is that her grandma owns a restaurant and she helps out. Something unique about Angus is that he enjoys time outside and dirt biking. Teo is unique because he enjoys traveling!

Top 10 Things to do with Kids Under 10 https://truckeecharterschool.org/2016/11/14/top-10-things-to-do-with-kids-under-10/ Mon, 14 Nov 2016 20:21:07 +0000 https://truckeecharterschool.org/?p=54376 New rack cards will be on display at various locations around Truckee / Tahoe outlining favorite activities for children under 10 to discover. Truckee is a great place to visit and there are many things to explore for visitors and locals alike. From hiking to swimming, skiing to snowshoeing, 2nd & 3rd grade students from Sierra Expeditionary Learning School brainstormed all of their favorite spots, voted to narrow down locations, and then worked in groups to complete the write-ups.

Their ultimate goal is to help guide visiting families to some local kid favorites. The project was inspired by an Expedition focused on Truckee history, and exemplifies the service learning taking place across SELS K-8 classrooms. These 4-5 month-long Expeditions help ground learning by including classroom lessons, field work, and professional experts. These experiences are (mostly) shaped around our local and regional communities, helping students connect learning to what’s meaningful in their lives.

Kudos to the Welch and MinBorg Crew Leaders for creating authentic platforms for writing and expression!

Fire and Ice – Case Study 2
Truckee Yesterday: Students have been learning from local experts about the history of Truckee. Chelsea Walterscheid visited the classroom and shared historical photos and stories about the early years of Truckee’s downtown Commercial Row. We also visited Truckee Fire Station 92 and learned about how fire affected Truckee’s early years from Paul Spencer and Nick Brown. These opportunities to meet with experts help bring our Expedition to life for our crew. Our next step is to continue our research on downtown historical Truckee and begin writing informational paragraphs in preparation for our Victorian Holiday tours in December.

Questions of the Month:
What was Truckee’s original name?
How did Truckee get its name?
What was the 1st building in Truckee? Who lived in it?
How did firefighters fight fires before there were fire trucks?

Top 10 Rack Cards: Our Top 10 rack cards are printed and in the process of being distributed throughout town. You can find our cards at the California Welcome Center, Donner Memorial State Park Visitor’s Center, and KidZone Museum. If you would like extras to share, please let us know and we will send them home.

Case Studies 1 & 2: Truckee Yesterday and Truckee Today:
Our Fire and Ice expedition is in full swing. Through fieldwork the students have all been acquainted with downtown Truckee, and have looked at the historical buildings as well as the current businesses. The Truckee Jail Museum was a theatrical hit (ask about the missing miner!) and local expert Chelsea Waltershid lead us down Commercial Row sharing stories of Truckee’s past.

Project Based Learning- The second and third graders are in the final stages of publishing Truckee’s Top 10 for Under 10. They brainstormed, voted on, and wrote paragraphs about their favorite local activities and restaurants for families visiting the area. These professional quality brochures will be put in the Truckee Visitor’s Center for all to see (and use!). Don’t worry, we’ll be sure to send one home when ready.

Questions to Ask your child
What was the Truckee location you wrote about?
Did anyone ever escape from the Truckee jail?
Who is the author of the month?

Crew News:
Bookbag Activity Update – Book bags are up and running! Hopefully your child has found enjoyment reading about a particular topic. Just as a reminder, book bags are for both 2nd and 3rd graders which account for the various reading levels included within the bags. Sometimes books may seem easier, sometimes more challenging. If books are more challenging, we encourage you to read to your child.

Another addition to the book bags will be the activity portion. We’ve been carefully collecting supplies and some are still on their way. Included in each bag is a binder outlining a fun art project or creative activity, such as water colors, puppets, puzzles, etc. Please help keep the bags and supplies in good shape to be passed on to the next family. We hope your child finds enjoyment in these activities!

Please help your child to return their bags on Fridays. We are on a rotation system and rely on the families’ help informing us if something needs to be replaced or is missing. Feel free to shoot an email or put a quick note in the planner.

Communication – Just a friendly reminder to include both teachers in email correspondence. If we are both included it eases our flow of communication, and we are all in the know. Thank you in advance.

Yellow Folder – These go home from Monday and returned on Friday. Unless there is a form to be turned ASAP, please remind your child to turn in all of their folder items no earlier than Friday. They are welcome to keep their folder in their cubbies. Turning in our papers at the same time ensures nothing gets lost.

Shared Reading Folders – By now you should have seen your child’s red shared reading folder. These folders will come home every other week in the green book bags and are considered homework. The shared reading that you see are poems that have been discussed and read several times in class. The purpose of these folders is for your child to practice fluency. On the back of each poem is a place for you, or whomever your child chooses to read with (pets included), to sign as an indication that the poem was read aloud. On the Friday shared reading folders are returned, we will invite some of the students to share their poem of choice with the crew.

Just Right Books – As children enter 2nd grade they are often still learning to read, and learning to select good fit books. As these students transition to 3rd grade, they also transition from learning to read, to reading to learn. Every child differs in their comfort level of selecting good fit books, but this is a very important focus in our 2/3 crew and supports students in the goal of reading to learn. While we discuss strategies to help students independently determine if a book is a good fit or not in class, we also encourage you to support your child in the following ways: Does your child show interest in the book? Does he or she understand the story, and are they able to accurately retell what has been read? Can he or she read the story independently, or with minimal support? Finally, can your child recognize most of the words (ask your child about the “5 Finger Rule”)?

Parent Pipelines – To accompany our weekly comprehension/accuracy/fluency/ or vocabulary focus in class, you will find “Parent Pipelines” in the weekly yellow folders. These pipelines are user friendly tools for parents in order to support children at home with the strategy currently taught in class. We ask that you keep these pipelines as they are a great reminder in how to support your child when comprehension breaks down (or you just want to be sure they do understand what is read), words are innacurate, etc.

Homework Clarification – We give a light load of homework in the MinBorg Crew. Our homework consists of: Reading books in the book bags, practicing Parent Pipelines (reading strategies) at home, some math, and shared reading folders. Occasionally we will give no homework (aside from nightly reading from a good fit book) if it is an unusual week.

Independent Study – We have new links up on our crew webpage for independent study! If your child is sick, please go to the /https://truckeecharterschool.org/ and print, complete one page for reading, writing and math. If you’d like us to print them and send home we’re happy to do that. Reach out with any questions.

Book Orders – Scholastic book orders will be sent home once a month, and ordering is optional, of course. If you choose to order books for your child we ask that you submit your order online. Online ordering eases and expedites the process, plus we then get a free book for the class!

Class Dojo – We’ve noticed many of you have logged on to the Class Dojo website/app. It’s main purpose is to track the students’ Habits of Work (HOWs). We look forward to trying this new system for our crew!

Conferences – Conference sign ups are posted! Please only sign up next to a 1 or 2, X’s indicate days/times not available. If unable to make a date or time work email us and we will do our best to accommodate you. We look forward to meeting with you and your child to discuss goals, not only for your child, but also for you as the parent!

Booster Seats – If your child is 7 years old, please be sure to bring (or arrange if your child rides the bus) a booster. Last week we were in a scramble since a few other crews also had fieldwork and borrowed the SELS extra booster seats. Although we always try to make it work, your child may not be able to join us if they can not be safely (and lawfully) transported. We’d hate to have anyone miss out!

Crew Highlights:
We’d like to highlight our 3rd grade “Peacekeeper” of the week, Annika! Annika enjoys skiing and time with family. She plays soccer and likes to read in her free time. One thing that makes Annika unique is her creativity and positive spirit!

Thank you to the following patents who volunteered on our past fieldwork to downtown Truckee: Kirsten Parkark, Kat Newell, John Killan, Liza Killan, Cassie Hebel, Mike Preseau, Maria Snideman, Luz Huerta, Michelle Blackburn, Lori Franssen, and Sara Spurlock. Looking forward to more fieldwork soon!

Important Dates:

Welcome Back to School, MinBorg Crew! https://truckeecharterschool.org/2016/09/08/welcome-back-to-school-minborg-crew/ Thu, 08 Sep 2016 17:31:53 +0000 https://truckeecharterschool.org/?p=54181 EXPEDITION EXPRESS:
FIRE AND ICE
Our fall expedition is packed with a lot of local history that really helps students understand the early beginnings of our quaint little town of Truckee. We’ll look at how Truckee started in the mid-1800’s, and how FIRE and ICE shaped our town. Through this expedition, we will venture to Downtown Truckee on several occasions to notice and wonder about the years gone by, learning and sharing the rich stories our area holds. Students will also compile a list of their favorite places in Truckee today, to help visiting children enjoy the scenic area. A closer look at how our climate and natural resources played a major role with early economics in downtown and Boca.

Questions to ask your child (following our fieldwork this month)
What are your favorite historical buildings in downtown Truckee? Why?
Where is your favorite place to go today in downtown Truckee? Why?
Explain how Truckee is different today than it was in the 1800’s.

CREW NEWS:
DAILY PLANNERS
Help your child gain important organizational and time management skills by checking their Daily Planners every night. Instill the Responsibility for Learning by making this one of their jobs at home. Record the amount of time spent exercising and reading each day, then initial on the line where indicated. This is a great source of communication between school and home. Use it to your advantage. We recommend that the planners “live” in their backpacks.

THEMED BOOK BAGS
Reading is essential for student success in school. Each week, your child will bring home a Themed Book Bag as part of their home reading requirements. Bags are organized by theme and consist of a variety of book at varying reading levels. Choose books that can be read both independently and as a parent-child partnership. There will not be a comprehension reflection sheet done at home this year. Instead, we will weave it into our school day. We will send these book bags home mid-September.

WEEKLY YELLOW FOLDERS
Please take the time to look through our weekly folders for important fieldwork forms, corrected work, parent handouts, etc. Notable items this week: FW forms, Front Row parent access codes (online learning program used in class as well) and a parent questionnaire.

LIBRARY CARDS
Our crew frequently visits the Truckee Public Library. Please send in your child’s public library card to school this week. All cards will be returned at the end of the school year. If you child does not have a library card, stop by the Truckee Public Library at 10031 Levon Street in Truckee and pick one up so your child won’t be left out when we check out books in a couple of weeks.

SCHOOL NEWS:
BACK TO SCHOOL PAPERWORK
If you have not completed the Back-to-School Paperwork, including the Family Handbook, please print these forms and send them to school with your child this week. It is imperative that we have all these forms completed and on file prior to our upcoming fieldwork dates. If you need hard copies, let me know and I would be happy to send home a packet for you with your child.

PARKING LOT AND DROP OFF LANES
Remember to only use the drop off lanes in the parking lot if you are dropping off or picking up your child. DO NOT PARK in the drop off lane. Pull forward to the front before having your child unload or load up. Use the striped crosswalks when walking through the parking lot if you need to visit campus while keeping your child with you at all times.

DATES TO REMEMBER:
Monday, September 5: No School – Labor Day
Friday, September 9: Fieldwork
Tuesday, September 13: 3rd graders – Trails and Vistas
Wednesday, September 14: Minimum Day – School dismissed at 1:00
Friday, September 23: Fieldwork

Crew News:
It has been a busy couple of weeks complete with swimming, 3rd grade state testing, expedition experiments and more! Our crew has been very flexible with the changes in schedule and rolling with the flow. Swimming will continue through May 23rd, otherwise our schedule is back to normal.

Thanks to all who have signed up for the Spring Adventure Campout! We’re still looking for a food coordinator. Please visit Campout Jobs if you haven’t already. In your child’s Homework Folder you will see a green packet with important info for the campout. We decided to send it early to ensure plenty of time for families’ to review. Please note that we will be camping on Tuesday, May 31, the day we return to school from Memorial Day. Packing in advance may be best depending on your family plans for the long weekend.

Math: We can tell your children have been practicing their basic facts, keep it up! Whether you’re a second grade parent supporting your child with addition and subtraction facts, or a third grade parent supporting your child with basic multiplication facts, we appreciate the support and encouragement you provide your child. As a reminder, if you are looking for extra at-home practice please use your child’s Front Row account for just right math practice.

Book Bags: At this point in the school year, we will let your child choose the reading strategy for their book bag response. Keep up the good work and we hope you are enjoying the creative activity as well!

Goals: While we take time to reflect on students goals from goal setting conferences in class, be sure you are taking the time to review your child’s goals with him or her as well. Our hope is for everyone to accomplish their spring goals by the end of the year, and with enough effort we know they can do it!

Great Skate: Please remember to sell raffle tickets for the Great Skate! So far, we have only had two children turn in their envelopes… Let’s win that pizza party!

CREW NEWS
Cross Country Skiing: As part of our Adventure Program, the Welch and MinBorg crews are learning the lifelong sport of cross country skiing. This is a great activity for students to learn at a young age to inspire a healthy, active lifestyle for the rest of their lives. We are focusing on maintaining a growth mindset as we face challenges and having fun all at the same time. Parents are needed as drivers and ski buddies, so come join us and sign-up on our Google Doc. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1H0dbXsWgC_Fz9lwl959cTM_3EHKVRj9nkywHVqUTx3c/edit

Arts for the Schools: Meena’s Dream: Our crew attended a school performance hosted by Excellence in Education on Friday, January 15. These performances bring performing arts to local children giving them the opportunity to view different artists in action.
Nevada County Library: I am extremely proud of the high level of responsibility our crew has been showing with our visits to the Nevada County Library. Students are checking out books to read themselves, to share with family, and returning them in a timely manner to the library. This is a great skill to learn at an early age. Our next trip is scheduled for February 4. Please sign-up on the google doc if you would like to join us! https://docs.google.com/document/d/14p-hha5k-h65BBI5WYnYetB0wFvW4hDSR3dSpKqmjVw/edit

Harvest of the Month: A huge shout out to Cassie Hebbel and Yvette Durant-Bender, our Harvest of the Month parent volunteers. Each month, our crew is treated to a delicious recipe made with locally grown fruits and vegetables. This month, students tasted legumes and Cassie made a variety of tasty things for them to try.
