Fall Meeting Minutes

October 17th, 2022

 

Fall dinner/business meeting was held at Brewser’s Sports Grille, 839 W. Water St, Coal Township, PA at 6pm.  Planning for the 140th reunion and other alumni business was discussed.

 

15 members and guests were in attendance.

 

President Mary Anne Brennan Stump ‘00 called the Business Meeting to order at 7:10pm.

 

PRINCIPAL REPORT:  Todd Hockenbroch ’97 was unable to attend but passed his input to the President to be given at the meeting.

  • We'll get a date for the alumni exam and will report it back as soon as we lock it in.  Are there any dates that would be better for the association?
  • Electronic version of the alumni exam is still very successful.
  • The Lynch scholarship has directly increased the number of our vocational students.
  • We can never thank the association enough for all you do.  The scholarship monies obtainable to our students have provided opportunities that may have never been available to them without it.
  • Would anyone wish to speak to our seniors to help promote the association?  Need date and time.
  • Is there anything myself or the school can do for the association at this time?
  • I am volunteering at McDonalds tonight and will have my phone on me if you need to contact me.  Stop through the drive through after the meeting, I know the person working it!

 

SECRETARY’S REPORT:  Minutes from the April 18th meeting are on the website for review.  Mary Anne Pitorak Miller ‘74 made the motion to accept the report and Bob Mattis ‘68, seconded the motion.

 

TREASURER’S REPORT:  The Treasurer provided a report via email as follows:

General Fund checkbook balance = $17,034.72

Educational Fund checkbook balance = $39,608.07

 

Jeff Clutcher ‘78 made a motion to accept the report and seconded by Bruce Clutcher ‘72.  All were in favor.

 

COMMUNICATIONS:  Nothing to report at this time.

 

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

 

Banquet:  John Klinger ’68 reported the banquet will be held on Saturday May 27th, 2023 at Masser’s Banquet Hall.

 

Afterglow:  Mary Anne Brennan Stump ‘00 reported that Erik Anderson ‘97 will be doing the Afterglow entertainment/trivia contest at the Banquet on May 27th, 2023.

 

Entertainment:  Mary Anne Brennan Stump ‘00 reported the Chorus Musical Cast will perform

 

Invitations/Newsletters:  Madison Blackwell, a 2017 graduate and Susquehanna University creative writing graduate attended the meeting.  She has accepted to start as the chairperson for the Invitation/Newsletter Committee, working with those already on the committee.  Thank you Madison!

 

Program:  Mary Anne Pitorak Miller ‘74 emphasized the importance of deadlines when she needs input for the publication printing.

 

Auditing:  Nothing to report at this time.  This is an open position.

 

Awards:  Nothing to report at this time.

 

By-Laws:  Nothing to report at this time.

 

Class Representatives:  Jeff Clutcher ‘78 reported that he received a call from Beverly Fedorko Katalenas Class of 1956 that she needs to resign as class rep.  She is looking to see if anyone from her class can take her place.  Removed class rep Kathy Shoop Fanella ’72 – passed away.

 

Educational Fund:  Jeff Clutcher ’78 reported the educational fund committee will meet with banking officials at St Johns UCC Church Parlor at 7pm on Wednesday November 16th.

 

Memorabilia:  Jeff Clutcher ’78 reported he received from Patricia Long Troxell Class of 1957 a box of items for Memorabilia, with 2 books from the Academy building, 2 books of poems, review from 1929, the first 25 years of the Shamokin High School.  Mary Anne Brennan Stump ’00 to check with the school on status of room at the high school for us to use for alumni association memorabilia.

 

Nominations:  We have a need for a female Vice-President for 2023-2024

 

Publicity:  Jamie A. Hoffman Bordell ‘75 sent an email to Tim Zyla at News-item on October 11th for News Item to place in Noteworthy on Friday October 14th.

 

Website:  John Clutcher ‘74 reported the following:

For a historical perspective, the initial alumni webpage was created on April 8th, 1998 using my AOL account.  It relocated to the high school server on February 12th, 2002.  On June 20th, 2011, it relocated to the schoolwires.net server as part of the school district web service.

 

Routine maintenance, such as email updates, posting minutes/newsletter, graduation/banquet programs, updating “US Mailing Addresses Missing”, posting Class Reunion information, and changing class representatives are an ongoing process.  You can check out the website using the following path:

05/29/2022 – Added banquet program to the website.

06/09/2022 – Added banquet minutes to the website.

06/23/2022 – Revised banquet minutes via an update from our treasurer concerning the 1962 donation.  Slight adjustment and clarification on where the funds are to be used.

07/02/2022 – Removed Class Rep Kathy Shoop Fanella ’72 (deceased).

09/16/2022 – Updated website and Facebook page with October meeting information.

Continued future consideration – New Business.

Starting a discussion at the 04/18/2022 meeting on the technical needs and long-term support of alumni association website, Facebook and database needs.  No update on this topic for the 10/2022 meeting.

 

Webpage reflects Facebook entry for the alumni association created in the fall 2014.  Current membership is at 308 (up from 293 at the April 18th 2022 meeting).

 OLD BUSINESS:  When a donation is made to any of the alumni association funds, check should reflect the Shamokin Area High School Alumni Association.  Work with our treasurer of you have any questions - Greg Dwulet ’68.  John Clutcher ’78 to update the webpage with this information in various locations.

 

NEW BUSINESS:

Winter Meeting:  Wednesday January 18th, 2023 - 6:30pm - Grace Lutheran Church 7th & Chestnut St., Shamokin, PA.

 

Spring Meeting:  Wednesday April 19th, 2023 - 6:30pm - Grace Lutheran Church 7th & Chestnut St., Shamokin, PA.

 

Banquet – Saturday May 27th, 2023 5:45pm Masser’s Banquet Hall, Paxinos, PA.

 

Recognize all seniors in the annual newsletter so they feel part of the Alumni Association after they graduate.  As space permits, 2022 graduates and summer GED members will be included in the April 2023 newsletter.
