141st Annual Reunion

 

Saturday May 25th, 2024 - Masser’s Banquet Hall - Paxinos PA - 5:45pm.

 

The opening invocation was given by Charlie Wayne ’77.

 

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited.  Irving Berlin’s song “GOD BLESS AMERICA” was sung by all attending with Bonny Ensinger Klinger ‘68 as the accompanist.

 

Charlie Wayne ’77 - President of the Alumni Association - provided the banquet introductions.  A delicious meal was provided by Masser’s Catering.  After dessert, the business meeting started with a silent prayer in memory of deceased members.

 

The Secretary’s Report is in the April 2024 Newsletter.  With a motion by Rob Ensinger ‘74 and seconded by Mary Anne Pitorak Miller ’74, the report was approved as printed.  All were in favor.

President Charlie Wayne ’77 presented the Class of 2024 to those attending the banquet, welcoming them to the Alumni Association.  Nina Wilk - Senior Class President presented the 2024 class pennant to the Association.

 

Entertainment for 187 alumni, seniors, parents, and friends was presented by members of the Senior High Chorus under the direction of Joseph Dudeck.  Selections from the musical “Jekyll and Hyde” were performed.

 

Mary Anne Pitorak Miller ’74, coordinated the prize drawing activities and was assisted by seniors for gift delivery.

 

Ann Henniger Watts ’78, Vice-President, recognized the various anniversary classes and, where applicable, their contributions to the Education and General Funds:

 

1949 Class - 75 years - 0 attending.

 

1954 Class - 70 years - 0 attending.

 

1959 Class - 65 years - 0 attending.

 

1964 Class - 60 years - 2 attending.

 

1969 Class - 55 years - 1 attending.

 

1974 Class - 50 years Golden Anniversary - 3 members attended.  John Clutcher reported they have an event scheduled for Saturday September 14th, 2024 – Fairview Gun Club – 2147 W State St., Coal Township, PA 17866.  A token check contribution of “one thousand nine hundred and seventy-four pennies” ($19.74) was presented for the Education Fund.  Additional contributions are expected.

 

1979 Class - 45 years - 0 attending.

 

1984 Class - 40 years - 1 attending.  The class has a Labor Day Reunion planned.

 

1989 Class - 35 years - 1 attending.

 

1994 Class - 30 years - 1 attending.

 

1999 Class - 25 years - 1 attending.

 

2004 Class - 20 years - 1 attending.

 

2009 Class - 15 years - 0 attending.

 

2014 Class - 10 years - 0 attending.

 

2019 Class - 5 years - 0 attending.

 

 

The oldest alumni award attending the banquet was presented by Ann Henniger Watts ’78 - vice president - to her mom Mabel Malick Henninger ’47.

 

Gregory Dwulet ’68 - alumni treasurer - presented a distance award to Prudence Beury Fagotti ’52 who is attending the banquet from Pawleys Island, South Carolina.

 

 

Matt Weller ’91 – Secretary of the Scholarship Committee, presented the Alumni Scholarship Awards.  These are awards for four years.

 

Seven awards are from Coal Township Alumni Association (CT) while nine are from Shamokin Area High School Alumni Association (SA).  Congratulations were extended to all.  Recipient’s yearly awards amount, college choice and major follows:

 

1st - Porter Kramer (SA) - $6,000 - Penn State University - Engineering

 

2nd - Jacob Erdman (SA) - $5,500 - Bucknell University - Chemistry

 

3rd - Sandy Lin (SA) - $5,200 - Susquehanna University - Music and Biology

 

4th - Emily Sokoloskie (SA) - $5,000 - Wilkes University - Pharmacy

 

5th - Dalton Poeth (SA) - $5,000 - Penn State University - Engineering

 

6th - Carter Kerstetter (SA) - $4,800 - Gettysburg University - Museum Studies

 

7th - Ethan Price (SA) - $4,500 - Alvernia University - Physician Assistant

 

8th - Micaela Hinds (SA) - $4,200 - Howard University - Criminology

 

9th - Declan Smith (SA) - $4,000 - Commonwealth University Bloomsburg - Computer Science

 

10th - Haley Rebuck (CT) - $4,000 - Penn State University - Pre Med

 

11th - Dana Burd (CT) - $3,500 - Elizabethtown College - Physician Assistant

 

12th - Jace Shipe (CT) - $3,000 - PPL employment

 

13th(T) - Brittney Radomski (CT) - $3,000 - Penn State University - Earth Science

 

13th(T) - Kennedy Petrovich (CT) - $3,000 - Susquehanna University - Business Management

 

15th - Jason Alderson (CT) - $3,000 - Slippery Rock University - Marketing

 

16th - Noah Wallish (CT) - $3,000 - Moravian University - Computer Science

 

 

Additionally, seven Thomas Lynch Awards were presented at the banquet by Matt Weller '91.  They are $5,000 per year for up to 4 years, depending upon the area of study.

If all 23 scholarships/awards presented tonight are used for 4 years, the total payout would be $406,800.  Thanks to all who contribute to the scholarship program.  You are helping to make a difference!

 

 

High School Principal Todd Hockenbroch ’97 gave a report on SAHS and included information on academics, athletics, music, and art.  Some highlights:

  • Testing - 3 students scored over 700 on their verbal SAT tests.  Another student scored 1560 on their SAT test, the highest for the school.
  • Our music program was rated through the "High School Musical Tour," receiving many best category placements.  The modern band program, competition marching band, PMEA festival participation and the high school musical “Something Rotten” was reviewed.
  • The success of various activities in the English, Science, Health/Physical Education and Math programs was reviewed.  11 out of 11 students passed the AP Calculus Test.
  • National Honor Society and the spring Prom were discussed in detail.  “Spear Academy” was discussed, which is used to help the student body feel connected.
  • Athletic achievements were reviewed for a variety of sports with several athletes qualifying and advancing in state tournaments.

 

 

Jeff Clutcher ’78 - President of the education (scholarship) committee asked for ratification of 3 members to the committee.  These are 5-year terms through 2029.

Outgoing Alumni President Charlie Wayne ’77 introduced the new officers and thanked the many committees and members for their help this past year.  He also encouraged all alumni to become active with the association by attending meetings which are held 3 times per year - fall, winter, and spring.  Check the website for details.  The fall meeting information to be posted late summer or early fall.

The Senior Class led the Alumni Association in singing the Alma Mater, which was accompanied by Bonny Ensinger Klinger ‘68.

 

Charlie Wayne ’77 delivered the closing benediction.

 

AFTERGLOW:  A Trivia game was held.  Erik Anderson ’97 was the advisor and host for this event.  There were many alumni, seniors and parents participating.  Prizes were given.  The evening was enjoyed by all.
