Hi Dragon Families,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are excited to share that the Fall Festival will take place on Friday, October 10th, from 2:00 to 6:00 PM. This is always such a special event for our community, and we cannot wait to come together for an afternoon filled with food, music, and fun. We hope you and your family will join us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is also a lot of great news to celebrate from our school. Classroom visits are underway, and it has been a joy to see students and teachers so engaged in learning. We have also been out visiting middle schools, sharing with future Dragons what makes our school such a special place to learn and grow. Our golf team has advanced to regionals, and many of our orchestra and band students have earned recognition at Senior Regional Orchestra and Band. These successes remind us how much talent and commitment are present in our community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As we move through this busy season, thank you for your continued support of our students and staff. The weeks ahead will bring more opportunities to celebrate learning, cheer on our teams, enjoy the arts, and connect as a community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One final reminder: our Mission and Vision Survey, part of our ongoing strategic plan, is open for input until the end of next week. If you have not yet shared your thoughts, we would be grateful for your voice in shaping the future of our school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Notice of 10th-grade Vision and Hearing screen<\/strong>\u00a0

Dear Parents\/Guardians of 10th graders\u00a0

Hearing\u202fand\u202fvision\u202floss have the potential to affect your student’s ability to learn.\u00a0

In an effort to comply with Virginia Code 8VAC20-250-10, 10th-grade students will have their\u202fHearing\u202fand\u202fvision\u202fscreened in the coming weeks here at Maggie Walker Governor’s School.\u202f<\/strong>\u202fStudents will be called to the clinic briefly so that the school nurse can perform a\u202fvision\u202ftest using a snellen eye chart\u202fand\u202fa\u202fhearing\u202fscreen using an Audiometer.\u202f\u00a0

Vision\u202fscreening routinely tests distance\u202fvision. If your child wears glasses or contacts, they will be tested with their glasses\/contacts on. Though the\u202fvision\u202fscreening can detect several eye problems common to the age group being screened, it is not a substitute for a complete professional eye exam.

If your student does not pass the screening, the school nurse will\u202fattempt to notify you by email or phone, along with sending a letter to your home via your student.\u00a0If your student does not pass the\u202fhearing\u202fscreen, the school nurse will attempt to notify you by phone, along with sending a letter to your home. The\u202fhearing\u202fscreen is not a substitute for a complete examination by your student’s physician but is meant to attempt to identify potential\u202fhearing\u202floss\u202fand\u202fbring it to the attention of parent\/guardian\u202fand\u202fthe student’s physician.\u202f\u00a0

Per the Code of Virginia, section 22.1-273 exceptions: there are some circumstances in which a parent can OPT OUT their student from receiving this required screening. If you feel this applies to your student<\/strong>, it is important that you contact the school nurse ASAP at 804-354-6800, ext 1010,<\/strong> or send an email to\u202fashapiro@gsgis.k12.va.us<\/a>\u202fand\/or send in a signed note indicating that you wish to OPT OUT your student, noting the relevant exception.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/td><\/tr>

The Foundation\u2019s Annual Fund<\/a> Campaign supports many of the amazing academic and extracurricular experiences that set MLWGS apart, including our academic clubs and teams, student travel, teacher professional development, student aid, and more. This year, the Foundation has committed to raising $400,000 to support our Dragons. The Annual Fund<\/a> Family Participation Campaign is a friendly (but fierce, lol!) competition that recognizes the class with the highest percentage of families making annual fund donations each year.
