Interims available for viewing in your student portal on Friday, which means we are already at the midpoint of the first nine weeks. It is hard to believe how quickly the year is moving, and I am grateful to see students settling into their routines and procedures.\u00a0 As always, I encourage families to remind students that the first step toward improvement is a conversation. Please have your student reach out to teachers directly about tutoring or other supports to strengthen grades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are also in full swing with middle school recruitment fairs and fall sports. These events highlight the many opportunities available at MLWGS and give us a chance to connect with future Dragons as well as cheer on our current student-athletes. At the same time, the PTSA is hard at work preparing for the Annual Fall Festival, which will be held on Friday, September 26, 2025, from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. We look forward to seeing our community come together for this wonderful tradition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Student Fee Sheets<\/strong>All Maggie Walker students received their yearly fee sheet this week. Sheets were distributed in each student\u2019s first block class. Please review the sheet carefully with your student and take note of any fees that need to be addressed for the 2025-2026 school year.Payments may be submitted to the main office or made online through ODP. If you have questions about specific charges or need assistance, please contact the office for support. All payments should be received by Friday, September 19th.<\/strong><\/td><\/tr>
Parent-teacher conferences <\/strong>will take place on November 3rd,<\/strong> during which time parents may discuss their child\u2019s progress. More information regarding these conferences will be forthcoming.<\/td><\/tr>
Senior Portraits: <\/strong>Lifetouch\/Prestige is Maggie Walker\u2019s official school photographer, but you are NOT required to get your portrait taken by them. If you\u2019d rather get your formal Yearbook portrait at another studio, your portraits must adhere to the following specifications:formal dress (tux or drape) \u201cmidnight blue\u201d or other standard, dark blue or black background photo should be head & shoulders, with bottom of frame hitting mid-chest level.Photos from other studios are due to the MLWGS yearbook staff on Monday, Nov. 10.<\/strong><\/td><\/tr>

Wellness reminder. <\/strong>As a reminder, please help prevent the spread of infection by staying home if you are actively sick.  More specifically, you need to stay home if you have had a fever that is over 100.0 in the last 24hrs or have had any vomiting or diarrhea in the past 24hrs. If you are feeling sick and have cold symptoms, consider wearing a mask and washing your hands or using hand sanitizer throughout the day to protect others. 
All medical forms for the 2024-2025 school year<\/strong> should be submitted this month to the school nurse, Alisa Shapiro, ashapiro@gsgis.k12.va.us. This includes all students who have a medical condition or a life-threatening allergy or if they would like to either self-carry medications or have access to over-the-counter medications here at school. Please find forms online here: https:\/\/mlwgs.com\/parent-resources\/annual-student-forms\/<\/a> For our sophomore families:<\/strong> Vision and hearing screenings will be completed on all 10th grade students, as this is required by the Commonwealth of Virginia.  Parents have the option to have their child opt out of the screenings with written parent notification to Alisa Shapiro at ashapiro@gsgis.k12.va.us. The school nurse will complete these screenings for early identification of deficits. Parents are notified of results if further evaluation is indicated.Parents and teachers may request vision and\/or hearing screening for any student with written parental permission.<\/td><\/tr>

Notice of 10th grade Vision and Hearing screen  Dear Parents\/Guardians of 10th graders \u202f Hearing\u202fand\u202fvision\u202floss have the potential to affect your student’s ability to learn. \u202f In an effort to comply with Virginia Code 8VAC20-250-10, 10th grade students will have their\u202fHearing\u202fand\u202fvision\u202fscreened in the coming weeks here at Maggie Walker Governor’s school.\u202f\u202fStudents will be called to the clinic briefly so that the school nurse can perform a\u202fvision\u202ftest using a snellen eye chart\u202fand\u202fa\u202fhearing\u202fscreen using an Audiometer.\u202f Vision\u202fscreening routinely tests distance\u202fvision. If your child wears glasses or contacts, they will be tested with their glasses\/contacts on. Though the\u202fvision\u202fscreening can detect several eye problems common to the age group being screened, it is not a substitute for a complete professional eye exam. If your student does not pass the screening, the school nurse will\u202fattempt to notify you by email or phone along with sending a letter to your home via your student. If your student does not pass the\u202fhearing\u202fscreen, the school nurse will attempt to notify you by phone along with sending a letter to your home. The\u202fhearing\u202fscreen is not a substitute for a complete examination by your student’s physician but is meant to attempt to identify potential\u202fhearing\u202floss\u202fand\u202fbring it to the attention of parent\/guardian\u202fand\u202fstudent’s physician.\u202f Per Code of Virginia, section 22.1-273 exceptions: there are some circumstances in which a parent can OPT OUT their student from receiving this required screening. If you feel this applies to your student it is important that you contact the school nurse ASAP at 804-354-6800, ext 1010 or sending an email to\u202fashapiro@gsgis.k12.va.us\u202fand\/or send in a signed note indicating that you wish to OPT OUT your student noting the relevant exception. <\/td><\/tr>

This year, the Foundation has committed to raising $400,000 to support our Dragons.
