We would like to express our gratitude to Dr. Christine Anderson for sharing the news about the recent field trip to the U.S. Army Women’s Museum at Ft. Gregg-Adams, VA. The Gender, Politics, and Consumerism in a Global Context class had an opportunity to explore the museum’s artifacts in-depth, which made the experience even more engaging. Thank you for providing this enriching experience to the students.<\/p>\n

Dr. Anderson reports her class toured the galleries learning about the history of women in the U.S. Army. The galleries tell an important history of women\u2019s roles that include the intersection of gender, race, ethnicity, class, and sexual orientation. Students engaged in an archival activity that had them exploring a variety of primary sources, photographs, and ephemera of three different female soldiers in different wars. Students then got the opportunity to have a discussion with an active-duty female officer, Major Patton-Neal, who discussed her experiences as a black woman in her 30-year career in the U.S. Army that included time as an enlisted soldier and officer.<\/p>\n
