Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School was recognized for student success in the Advanced Placement program while broadening access.<\/em><\/p>\n

[Richmond, Virginia] \u2013 College Board announced that Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School has been named to the Advanced Placement\u00ae Program (AP\u00ae) School Honor Roll, earning PLATINUM distinction.<\/p>\n

The AP\u00ae School Honor Roll recognizes schools whose AP programs are delivering results for students while broadening access. Schools can earn this recognition annually based on criteria that reflect a commitment to increasing college-going culture, providing opportunities for students to earn college credit, and maximizing college readiness.<\/p>\n

Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School had 486 students who took at least one AP exam in 2023, with 456 students scoring a three or higher on at least one AP exam.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The three criteria for PLATINUM schools are:
\n\u2022 Expand your school’s college culture by enabling 80% of your Class of 2024 to experience 1 AP course before graduating.
\n\u2022 Assist with college affordability by enabling 50% of your Class of 2024 to earn college credit by earning an AP Exam score of 3.
\n\u2022 Optimize student’s college readiness by creating opportunities for 15% of your Class of 2024 to take a total of 5 APs across their high school years, with at least 1 taken in 9th or 10th grade.<\/p>\n

“The curricula of the AP courses offered here at MLWGS align with the College Board\u2019s objectives, but, thanks to the talent, dedication, and expertise of our teachers, our students soar and perform at the highest levels in our AP classrooms, said Dr. Lisa Williams, Assistant Director of Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School. “Our AP courses are designed to appeal to students as gifted, curious, and high-achieving learners, propelling them toward global citizenship and ethical leadership.”<\/p>\n

\u201cAP represents an opportunity for students to stand out to colleges, earn college credit and placement, and potentially boost their grade point averages,\u201d said Trevor Packer, head of the AP program.  \u201cThe schools have shown that they can expand access to these college-level courses and still drive high performance \u2013 they represent the best of our AP program.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Maggie L. Walker Governor\u2019s School for Government and International Studies (MLWGS) is an innovative public high school offering a comprehensive college preparatory program emphasizing government, international studies, science, mathematics, languages, and fine arts.  The school serves students selected based on aptitude and interest in its mission.<\/p>\n

College Board\u2019s Advanced Placement\u00ae Program (AP\u00ae) enables students to pursue college-level studies\u2014with the opportunity to earn college credit, advanced placement, or both\u2014while still in high school. Through AP courses in 38 subjects, each culminating in a challenging exam, students learn to think critically, construct solid arguments, and see many sides of an issue\u2014skills that prepare them for college and beyond.<\/p>\n
