{"id":376582,"date":"2015-06-22T17:51:31","date_gmt":"2015-06-22T21:51:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/content-mlwgs.pantheonsite.io\/?p=376582"},"modified":"2023-08-04T17:58:50","modified_gmt":"2023-08-04T21:58:50","slug":"success-stories-2014-2015","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mlwgs.com\/success-stories-2014-2015\/","title":{"rendered":"Success Stories 2014-2015"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>The Class of 2015<\/em>: 172 Graduates,&nbsp;36,027 hours of community service,&nbsp;awarded over $18.9 million in scholarships, their average GPA was 4.08, their average SAT score was 2089 (Math-694, Reading-711, Writing-685),&nbsp;24 were National Merit Finalists and 62 more received Commendations in the National Merit Program.&nbsp; 9 &nbsp;received National Merit Scholarships and&nbsp;&nbsp;5 were Presidential Scholar Candidates and 1 became a Semi-Finalist.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>Daily Beast TOP HIGH SCHOOLS 2014 (MLWGS-12<sup>th<\/sup> Place)<\/em>. Six indicators were culled from school surveys to compare public high schools in the U.S., with graduation and college acceptance rates weighed most heavily. Other criteria included: college-level courses and exams, percentage of students with free or reduced lunch, as well as SAT and ACT scores \u2013 another mark of how well a school prepares students for college.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>MLWGS is cited by VA Living 2014 Top High Schools &amp; Colleges Editor\u2019s Choice Award<\/em>recognizing schools for their excellence and innovation in the following categories: Arts &amp; Humanities, Science, Math &amp; Technology, Performing Arts, Health &amp; Medicine and Capital Improvements.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">MLWGS Awarded <em>ROSMY<\/em> Catalyst Award for creating a safe and supportive culture for students.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Four&nbsp;MLWGS students attend <em>2014 Summer Governor\u2019s School Academies<\/em> spending weeks immersed in a language or program.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>VCU Medical Science Internship Program (MSIP)<\/em> \u2013 two MLWGS students&nbsp;were accepted into the selective. VCU MSIP, a six-week summer program that&nbsp;provides high-school students the opportunity to work in a research lab at VCU with a scientist.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">MLWGS Student wins <em>U.S. Department of State NSLI-Y Scholarship<\/em> to study Arabic in Morroco for the summer.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>Two Students Have Work Accepted to Library of Virginia<\/em>: one&nbsp;chose to examine the integration of Charles City County Schools and another<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>researched the journey of Martha Grattan, an MLWGS parent, who entered Washington and Lee University in 1985 as a member of the school\u2019s first female class.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>Scholastic Southeast Region-at-large Writing Key Winners.<\/em> In this competition, student awards included: 3 Gold Keys including two in poetry and one in flash fiction; 5 Silver keys including 2 in Flash Fiction, 2 in poetry, and 1 in Short Story; and 3 Honorable Mentions including 2 in poetry and 1 in personal essay\/memoir.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>We the People captured the regional and state championship for the 17<sup>th<\/sup> time <\/em>on January 30, 2015. We the People team members study a broad range of topics related to American government and constitutionalism and prepare for a simulated congressional hearing during which judges ask questions and score units based on knowledge and articulation.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>We the People Captures 2<\/em><em><sup>nd<\/sup><\/em> <em>Place in <strong>National<\/strong> Title<\/em><strong><em>. <\/em><\/strong>After two days of competition held the last weekend of April in Washington, DC, the MLWGS team advanced to the final round of competition on Monday, April 27<sup>th<\/sup>. Final standings were announced at a huge banquet that evening with representatives from all 50 states for more than 1,200 high school students.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>Model United Nations Club hosts former Federal Reserve Chairman Dr. Ben Bernanke at GSMUN,<\/em> March 20-21, 2015.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>Model United Nations<\/em> <em>Club<\/em>&nbsp;competed&nbsp;<em>at VAMUN XXXIV<\/em>. Students win gavels for<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>Roman Senate, &nbsp;Nicaraguan Assembly, &nbsp;Committee on Treatment of Modern Art, and US Southern Command Committee.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>Forensics Team takes 3<sup>rd<\/sup> Place at the VA Catholic Forensic League State Championship with s<\/em>tudents qualifying for nationals. One Walker&nbsp;sophomore excelled at the National Championships as finished as a quarter finalist.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>Debate Team takes 2<sup>nd<\/sup> Place at the VA Catholic Forensic League State Championship&nbsp;<\/em>with&nbsp;four students qualifying and&nbsp;competing in the national championships in&nbsp;May.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>MLWGS BoB Squad Among World\u2019s Best Team: <\/em>Ranked by hsqbrank.com, a website that ranks quiz bowl and academic teams by their statistical performances at various tournaments. The publisher wrote as of March 8<sup>th<\/sup>, \u201cthe quiz bowl team from Maggie Walker is currently ranked 10th in the world and 2nd in the state of Virginia for the 2014-15 high school quiz bowl season.\u201d Additionally, MLWGS is \u201cjust 24 schools with two teams in the rankings; your \u201cB\u201d team is currently ranked 125th in the world and 7th in Virginia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>MLWGS Wins State VHSL Scholastic Bowl Championship. <\/em>The team has won States 6 times since 1998, including 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 school years.&nbsp; The team also came in 2nd place 9 times since 1999.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>BoB Squad \u2018A\u2019 Team&nbsp; Paced 5<sup>th<\/sup> at HSNCT<\/em> in Chicago, IL out of 272 teams.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>BoB &nbsp;Squad Wins 3<sup>rd<\/sup> Place at PACE<\/em> in Reston, VA out of the 96 teams that competed.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>Walker Model Congress welcomed Dr. Charles Sydnor<\/em>, a nationally recognized expert on the Holocaust, as this year\u2019s keynote speaker WMC 2015. As an expert witness for the U.S. Department of Justice from 1981-2006, he helped revoke the citizenship of 23 Nazi war criminals who had been living in the United States.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>Model Congress at Princeton. S<\/em>tudents win gavels for Best Delegate, Senate Judiciary and&nbsp;Best Delegate, Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>MLWGS Model Congress excels at UPenn Conference<\/em>, one of the most prestigious Model Congress conferences&nbsp;in the nation.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>MLWGS Math Modeling Team Competes as the Only High School in the &nbsp;Nation at the SABR Conference March 12-16, 2015 in Phoenix<\/em>. &nbsp;The competition pits undergraduate students from colleges and universities across the country against each other in an analytic major league baseball operations decision \u2014 the type of decision a team\u2019s general manager and staff are faced with over the course of a season.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>Walker\u2019s Mech Tech Dragons Robotics Team<\/em> wins back-to-back Entrepreneurship Awards at VAR.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>Maggie L. Walker Governor\u2019s School Chess Clinic to Feature Grandmaster Sergey Erenburg in Simultaneous Chess Exhibition. The MLWGS Chess Club, the Virginia&nbsp;Scholastic Chess Association, and the Capital One Volunteer&nbsp;Corps hosted a&nbsp;Free Chess Clinic for Richmond area school-age chess players on January&nbsp;13th, 2014.<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>MLWGS Chess Team Wins 2<u><sup>nd<\/sup><\/u> Place at the Virginia Scholastic and Collegiate Chess Championships, <\/em>in the K-12 section.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">MLWGS Green Dragons finished the final round of the <em>National High School Chess Championships<\/em> in Columbus, Ohio with solid results. In the U800 section, Walker\u2019s team&nbsp;finished 21st place. A Walker team of&nbsp;freshmen&nbsp;finished 61st.&nbsp;The U800 team placed 19th overall in the final standings.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>MLWGS Life Smarts Team finished 2nd at the State Competition<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>MLWGS Economics Regional Champions:<\/em> Region 1 Champions of the State Championship Economics Quiz Bowl held at VCU in April.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>MLWGS <\/em><em>Economic Quiz Bowl DOE Region #1 Winner and headed&nbsp;<\/em>to the ADAM SMITH&nbsp;State Championship Economics Quiz Bowl at VCU in April.<sup>&nbsp;<\/sup><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>Moody\u2019s Mega Math Challenge<\/em>: MLWGS\u2019s team competed in the M3 Challenge in NYC during April as one of the six best teams in the nation, ultimately finishing in 5th place and winning $5,000 from 1,128 papers submitted.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>MLWGS Scholastic Southeast Region-at-large Art Winners <\/em>received a total of (54) awards: 1 Gold Art Portfolio, 14 Photo Gold Keys, 6 Art Gold Keys,&nbsp;4 Silver Photo Portfolios, 5 Art Silver Keys, 2 Photo Silver Key,&nbsp;3 Honorable Mention Photography Portfolios, 13 Photo Honorable Mentions, 6 Art Honorable Mentions.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>MLWGS National Scholastic Art Winners<\/em>: one student won a Silver Medal for her print, \u201cVirgin of the Christmas Lights\u201d and another&nbsp;received a Silver Medal for her video\/performance piece, \u201cSwivel\u201d, in the \u201cFuture New\u201d category. Both picked up their prize at Carnegie Hall in New York during the national celebration of excellence in the visual arts.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">&nbsp;<em>Fall Drama<\/em>: \u2018You Can\u2019t Take It With You\u2019 by George Kaufman and Moss Hart, performed November 20-22, 2014.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>Spring Drama:<\/em> \u2018Into the Woods\u2019 by Stephen Sondheim performed March 12-14, 2015.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>MLWGS Students Play with Richmond Symphony Orchestra. <\/em>Orchestra students played \u201cSide by Side\u201d with the Richmond Symphony Orchestra at Richmond Center Stage.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>MLWGS Orchestra I and Orchestra II class Wins Excellent and Superior Ratings<\/em> for an overall rating of Excellent during the District One Orchestra Assessment Event.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>Three MLWGS Students Chosen for All-District Chorus <\/em>selected from more than 1,200 auditions from the Richmond area.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>One MLWGS Student Chosen for All-Virginia Chorus<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>Maggie L. Walker Governor\u2019s School is the 1<sup>st<\/sup> School in VHSL history to go six-for-six in state competitions throughout cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track.<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>Wells Fargo Cup<\/em> \u2013 <em>VHSL 2-A State Champions for Athletics<\/em>: Maggie L. Walker Governor\u2019s School.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>2014-2015 Boys and Girls Cross Country Teams \u2018<\/em>repeating\u2019<em> VHSL State Champions.<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>2014-2015 Cross Country: (7) All Americans<\/em>&nbsp;from MLWGS compete&nbsp;<em>at Nationals.<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>2014-2015 Cross Country All-Metro Runner of the Year&nbsp;from MLWGS.<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>Cross Country<\/em> <em>Regional Coach of the Year: <\/em>Jim Holdren<i>, <\/i>MLWGS<i>.<\/i><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>2014-2015 Boys and Girls Indoor Track <\/em><em>\u2018<\/em>repeating\u2019 <em>VHSL State Champions<\/em><strong><em>.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>Four Lexus of Richmond\u2019s Pursuit of Perfect Leadership Award Weekly Winners<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>Richmond Times Dispatch Scholar Athlete of the Month: April 2015.<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>Richmond Times Dispatch Scholar Athlete of the Year Runner-Up<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>MLWGS Golf Team Repeating District Champions<\/em><strong><em>. <\/em><\/strong>Additionally, one student&nbsp;was named to the All-Regional Team.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>Field Hockey, Conference, Region and State Runner-up Champions.<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>Field Hockey Regional Player of the Year<\/em><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>Field Hockey Conference and Region Coach of the Year<\/em><strong><em>: <\/em><\/strong><em>Paige Hawkins<strong>. <\/strong><\/em>Ms. Hawkins is a 5 time Region of the Year Coach winner, 6 time Colonial District &nbsp;Coach of the Year winner and 2 time Conference 33 winner.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>Three Field Hockey Players are 1<sup>st<\/sup> Team All-Region and All-Academic<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>MLWGS Regional and State VHSL Diving Champion<\/em>: It was a first win for the Maggie Walker Swim and Dive Team, with&nbsp;one student&nbsp;took 1st in the Women\u2019s 1-meter dive competition.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>MLWGS Swim Team at Regional&nbsp;Competition:<\/em> At the Regional swim meet, MLWGS Boys came in first and Girls came in a close second plus earned a second place finish at the Swim States.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>Walker Boys &amp; Girls Tennis:<\/em> Conference 33 and Regional Champions.&nbsp;Boys Team VHSL Tennis State Champions.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>VHSL Girls State Tennis Individual Champion<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>VHSL Boys State Tennis Runner-<\/em><em>up<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>Walker Baseball:<\/em> Conference and Regional Champions.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em>Walker Girls Soccer:&nbsp;<\/em><em>Conference 33 Champions.&nbsp;<\/em>Conference and Regional Champions.
