Seminar students undertake a research project and write a paper on a topic of interest related to the seminar theme and that is approved by the seminar instructor. Each seminar group also works together as a class to create a professional presentation for Showcase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sample Seminars are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>American Dream in Film and Literature<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Digital Video<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>History and Sabermetrics of Baseball<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Laboratory Techniques for the 21<sup>st<\/sup> Century<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Music Production and Recording<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Photojournalism in the Digital Age<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Revival and Revolution in Southern Africa<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mentorships<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Students desiring a more individual study of a field of interest may pursue a mentorship off of the MLWGS campus, meeting each Friday with the MLWGS Mentorship Coordinator to discuss their progress. Students electing this approach must complete a&nbsp;<em>minimum<\/em>&nbsp;of 115 hours of field experience with all documentation and assessments required for a passing mark in the Mentorship Program, complete a&nbsp;<em>minimum<\/em>&nbsp;of 25 hours meeting with the Mentorship Coordinator on Fridays to ensure all activities and assessments are completed, and complete a research project consisting of the research process, a product, research paper and professional presentation at Showcase.&nbsp;<em><br><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In recent years, mentorships have taken place at:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>VCU Health System Neurosurgery Department<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>University of Richmond Department of History<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Richmond City Circuit Court<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Federal Public Defender&#8217;s Office<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Richmond Times-Dispatch<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Science Museum of Virginia<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Greater Richmond Convention Center<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>HKS Architecture<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Price Studio<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Media General<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Virginia Museum of Fine Arts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns alignwide is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p><em>For additional program information, contact <a href=\"mailto:tcook@gsgis.k12.va.us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mr. Les Cook<\/a>, Coordinator of Mentorship and Seminar Programs.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Senior Seminars and Mentorships provide wonderful opportunities for students to explore areas of personal interest and complete their senior research requirement.<\/p>\n<p>Whether participating in a seminar or a mentorship, students engage in field-based research, create a product, write a research paper, and present at Senior Showcase.
