This week’s message will be fairly short as many of our families will be celebrating the Class of 2026 this afternoon!

First, a huge Thank You to our awesome PTSA for providing an incredible send off for the Class of 2026!  Not only did they have an incredible buffet, but each Senior also got a bag of treats and the chance to win a fun door prize!

Speaking of fun, our last Flex Day of the year is on Wednesday!  Check out what our School Counseling Department has planned:

• Our School Counselors will hold an open reflection forum for 9th, 10th, and 11th graders to share “What They Wish They Knew” as an incoming 9th-grader, and their wisdom will be passed down to our incoming Class of 2030 in the fall.

• 11th graders will also have the opportunity to write a letter to their future (graduating) selves. These letters will be returned to them when they graduate next May.

• Our GRASP advisor, Joyce King, will be available to meet with Juniors regarding financial aid opportunities.

Again this year we are offering a limited quantity of RETIRED laptops in exchange for a $100 donation to the school (cash or checks made to CodeRVA Regional High School will be accepted).  The devices are Dell Latitude 3330 models that include 8GB RAM; 235GB storage; i5 processor; 13.3″ LCD screens; and a fresh Windows 11 Pro OS install.  Purchase also includes a protective case (used) and a charging cord. Devices no longer have a manufacturer warranty and will not be supported by CodeRVA technology staff once purchased.  Devices will be wiped and all software will be removed except for software that is included in a Windows 11 Pro OS installation.  These devices may no longer be used on CodeRVA property and are being offered to families who may want a device for home use.  If you are interested in making a donation and receiving a device, please email Mr. Breunig at michael.breunig@coderva.org.  Requests will be processed in the order in which they were received.

Attention Class of 2027!  Please be aware all 12th graders must show proof of two doses of Meningococcal Conjugate Vaccine: one dose before age 16 and one dose at age 16 or older. If a student did not receive a single dose before age 16, one dose given at age 16 or older is fine.  Families can send a printed or scanned copy of the student’s shot record to cindy.crowder@coderva.org or send in a copy with the student.  The deadline for submitting this information is August 20, but don’t wait if you have this information on hand now.  Students will not be able to attend school in the fall without verification of this immunization.  If you have questions or need additional assistance, please call Nurse Crowder at 968-1823 or email her at the address above.

We are closing out Teacher Appreciation Week 2026, and I would like to take a moment to say Thank You to our incredible CodeRVA teaching staff.  Each one of them has come to our school with the mission to provide a caring, high quality educational experience for our students.  Some were previously in public schools, private schools, or even outside of education.  Each teacher brings something unique to contribute, but they all believe in the importance of public education and are willing to go above and beyond on a daily basis to make our school the very best it can be.  If you have not yet taken a moment to send an email of encouragement to your student’s favorite teacher (or teachers!), please do that now.

I must also say a huge Thank You to our incredible PTSA for all their support this week!  Not only did every teacher get a $25 giftcard, but they also received a gift bag; a delicious Cinco de Mayo breakfast; 5 minute professional massages; ice cream treats; and an incredible Chick-fil-A lunch.  A special Thank You goes to Mrs. “Ladybird” Taylor-Biggers for her leadership and being on site for every event to make sure things went smoothly.  Many thanks as well to all the families who contributed to helping making Teacher Appreciation Week 2026 so special!  We are grateful!

For those of you who have been watching the news the past few days about our learning management system Canvas, please know we have not experienced any service disruptions at CodeRVA.  If your student is telling you they cannot do their work because Canvas is down, that is not truthful.  If for some reason our students are unable to access Canvas for an extended period of time, we will alert families immediately.  We also have not received any information that any specific data from our school has been compromised.  Our security measures (two-step authentications, etc.) remain in place, and we will continue to stay in contact with our vendor for updates about Canvas.  One of the many great things about our school is that we are in direct control of our own platforms and are able to quickly adjust and respond as circumstances change.

As a reminder, our end of the year festivities kick off next week with our annual Yearbook Signing Party on Thursday 5/14! Yearbooks will be delivered to all students who pre-ordered their copies in April, and then all students will have the chance to get their Yearbooks signed by both their peers and the CodeRVA staff. There will also be a limited number of Yearbooks available for sale for any students who did not pre-order their copy. The cost is $35 and can be paid for with cash, card or check made out to CodeRVA Regional High School.

Attention all CodeRVA Families!  It has been a long standing rule here that students are not allowed to order food and have it delivered to school.  Parents have been allowed to bring food to school when students forget their lunches, are celebrating a birthday, etc.  Unfortunately recently we have seen an increase in parents ordering food for their students and having it delivered. This has created interruptions to our day, and we suspect some students are ordering food themselves and are saying it is from a parent.  We are asking for parents to refrain from having food delivered to the school unless it is an emergency or special occasion.  For the remainder of the school year, if food is delivered to school, students will be able to pick it up at the end of the day.  Parents are still able to bring food to their students though if you happen to be in the city.

There are two community events to pass along this week.  The first is free and the second does have a cost.  We don’t typically advertise anything that has a fee for families, but we figured ImmerseCon might be of such interest we would pass it along at least once for those families who want to learn more.

• On Saturday, May 16 from 8 a.m.-12 p.m. the University of Richmond Big Yard Sale is returning! This event is open to the public and features the sale of gently used student items (e.g. furniture, clothing, household items, etc.) collected by volunteers during move-out week. Proceeds from the sale go to the Falls of the James Sierra Club chapter and support initiatives undertaken by the University of Richmond student sustainability organizations.

• ImmerseCon 2026: Year of the Champion will be on July 11 + 12 in Richmond at the Greater Richmond Convention Center and will feature Esports, TCG Tournaments, Chess, Beyblade, Robotics, Tabletop Gaming, and a full Cosplay Showcase with awards, all under one roof.  Tickets are $40 at immersecon.com .

Award Categories:

• President’s Award for Educational Excellence: this award recognizes academic success in the classroom.  Students per specific course who have a 90% or above for a final grade for the current school year who have displayed high motivation, initiative, integrity, intellectual depth, leadership qualities and/or exceptional judgment are recognized.  For Dual Enrollment and fully online courses: World Languages, Economic and Personal Finance, and Health/PE 9 and 10 (due to the variability of the class sections and instructors), the student who has the highest grade in each content area in each grade level will be selected, unless no students with a C or higher in the course exist.

• President’s Award for Educational Achievement: this award recognizes students that show outstanding educational growth, improvement, commitment or intellectual development in their academic subjects. Its purpose is to encourage and reward students who give their best effort, often in the face of special obstacles.  This award is specifically for students enrolled in in-person, CodeRVA courses.

• The top 5 students in each grade level with the most PBIS referrals are recognized.

• We will also have a few special awards to distribute from outside partners.

You can tell we are nearing the end of the school year because we have lots of information to pass along this week.  First, you should have seen your student’s Marking Period 5 “Report Card” already since it was sent home with them yesterday (Thursday, April 30).  Please check with your student if they have not yet given you that document.  Thank you!

Next, please see the message below from our Testing Coordinator Ms. Heath about our upcoming SOL tests:

• Testing season has arrived!  Your students have been working hard to prepare for their upcoming SOL tests, and our teachers have been working hard to help them prepare.   Please encourage students to get a good night’s sleep and to eat a healthy breakfast before testing.  SOL tests are a graduation requirement, so it is especially important that students come to school on time with a fully charged laptop and do their best work on these dates.  Students who are unable to attend will be invited to a make-up test session.  Here is a list of the SOL tests coming up over the next two weeks:

  • Tuesday, 5/5: Reading SOL (11th grade)

  • Wednesday, 5/6: Science SOL (9th grade)

  • Tuesday, 5/12: Math SOL (9th grade)

• Some of our students are taking courses that have other important tests coming up as well.   Industry credential tests are a way for prospective employers to see that students have the skills to be successful in computer science.  Likewise, the AP Calculus test can help students stand out to colleges and potentially earn college credit.  Here is a list of course-specific tests just around the corner:

  • Monday, 5/4: Hardware and Networking, Cybersecurity, and Python industry credential tests

  • Monday, 5/11 at 8:30 AM: AP Calculus Test

Thursday May 14 will be a busy day at CodeRVA!  After Graduation Rehearsal and lunches, our students will be participating in our yearly Yearbook Signing Party! During this party, students will have the chance to get signatures from their friends as well as the CodeRVA staff to help remember everyone who made this year memorable for them.  If your student did not get the chance to pre-order a Yearbook, there will be the chance to buy Yearbooks at the Signing Party. Availability will be limited and will be sold on a first come, first served basis. Students must pay $35 via cash, card or check (made out to CodeRVA Regional High School) to get one of these limited stock Yearbooks the day of the event.

Graduation is just around the corner, and our families will be celebrating at a new venue this year that was voted on by a majority of Class of 2026 families.  We will be at St. Peter Baptist Church (2040 Mountain Rd, Glen Allen, VA 23060) in part because they are charging us less than half of what the Greater Richmond Convention Center did for the past two years.  As we seek to keep costs low, we wonder if we have any CodeRVA family members who are in law enforcement who would be able to volunteer for 3 hours on May 15 (9 AM-12 PM) to provide general security for our event.  We have been fortunate to have positive, family-focused celebrations for the past six years, but since we are in a new venue that does not come with its own security team, we thought we would ask our school community if anyone was available.  If you would like to volunteer in this way, please let me know at kume.goranson@coderva.org as soon as possible.  Thank you!

• VCU’s College of Engineering is offering a new Cleanroom Training Program this summer. The FBI Richmond Teen Academy gives high school students a behind-the-scenes look at careers in federal law enforcement. Through interactive presentations and demonstrations, students learn about topics like terrorism, cybercrime, public corruption, SWAT operations, and evidence response, while hearing directly from special agents and professional staff about real investigative work.  The next session will take place on July 8, 2026, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Richmond Field Office. The program is open to rising 9th–12th-grade students for the 2025–2026 school year. Applications, along with any required materials, must be submitted by May 15, 2026.

SUMMER SESSION 2026

If you have any questions about your student’s grades or potential participation in Course Completion, please contact your School Counselor.

• Summer session will begin on June 8 and end on July 16 for a total of six weeks. Here is a link to our current school year calendar for 2026-26.  Here is a link to our calendar for 2026-27.  Please note the 2026-27 calendar should be followed effective July 1, 2026.

• Each session of our Summer Session will take place Monday-Thursday during regular school hours (no school will occur on June 18 and July 2). Transportation will be provided by a student’s home district if they are scheduled to attend.

• Students may not miss more than one class during Course Completion or more than two classes in English Recovery if they are to receive credit for the session.

• Students who are not scheduled for any of the offerings shown below will not participate in the summer session.

• Students’ grades at the end of the school year, performances on LPA and SOL tests, and academic pathway decisions will impact if they are scheduled to attend one or more summer sessions. Students qualify for summer sessions through the following ways:

• Students who receive 50-59% in a Computer Science, Humanities, Math, or Science course at the end of the regular school year will be required to attend Course Completion. Course Completion will run in person for one week and involve reviewing key skills and standards to receive a passing grade (60%). Families will not have an option to choose when to do Course Completion(s). Students cannot receive a grade higher than 60% during Course Completion. Students who receive 0-49% in their Computer Science, Math, or Science course will receive a final failing grade and will repeat the course when appropriate.

• Students who receive 45-49% in a Humanities course at the end of the regular school year will be required to attend English Recovery to receive their English credit. English Recovery will run in person for one week in person and one week virtual and involve reviewing key skills and standards to receive a passing grade (60%). Families will not have an option to choose when to do English Recovery. Students cannot receive a grade higher than 60% during English Recovery. Students who receive 0-44% in their Humanities course will receive a final failing grade and will repeat the course when appropriate.

• Students who are not successful on their LPA and/or SOL tests will be required to attend SOL remediation and retake their respective LPA/SOL test. LPA/SOL remediation will run in person for one week. Families will not have an option to choose when to do their LPA/SOL remediation. Teachers will tell students if they have passed an SOL test and/or if they qualify for an Expedited Retake.  For students who do not pass, we will communicate via email if the student needs to do summer remediation and testing.  Those messages will be released once a block of subject area tests are complete.  For example, we will send information to families in need of summer math remediation once all math tests are done.

Rising 11th and 12th grade students who selected Dual Enrollment courses should read the next section.  All students not taking Dual Enrollment courses should continue to the next section header.

• All 11th grade students on the Associate Degree pathway will no longer have any gaps in their schedules during the school year as previous cohorts experienced. These students should plan to attend all marking periods of the 2026-27 school year and plan to attend for six weeks during Summer 2026 to complete two Dual Enrollment courses (MTH 161 and SDV 100; 4 total credit hours).  The dates for these summer courses are June 8 – July 16, 2026 (Monday-Tuesday; 8:50 AM-2:56 PM).  The math summer course will actually start asynchronously on May 26 while students are still in school so we can make sure there are no issues with logging in or attendance expectations. As a reminder, fees for these students’ Dual Enrollment courses are $20 per credit hour.  You are welcome to pay these fees in the summer or pay them along with your fall fees in August.

• All 11th grade students on the Dual Enrollment Uniform Certificate of General Studies (UCGS) pathway through J. Sargeant Reynolds should plan to attend in person during all marking periods as well.  There may be a gap in their schedules during Marking Period 3 when their DE classes are no longer meeting, and we will confirm this as soon as schedules are finalized. There are no Summer 2026 courses UCGS students have to take. As a reminder, fees for these students’ Dual Enrollment courses are $20 per credit hour and your family will be asked to pay your 2026-27 fees in August 2026.

• All 12th grade students on the Associate Degree pathway should plan to attend in person all marking periods through the end of Marking Period 5 (4/22/27). At the conclusion of MP5, students on the Associate Degree will have completed all requirements for their high school diploma and Associate Degree (unless they are completing a World Language course during their 12th grade year). These students should not plan to attend classes after MP5 concludes.  These students should plan to attend for six weeks during Summer 2026 to complete one Dual Enrollment course (CSC 208, which is a 3 credit course). The dates for this summer course are June 8 – July 16, 2026 (Monday-Tuesday; 8:50 AM-2:56 PM).  June 22 and July 6 are virtual learning days for this course. As a reminder, fees for these students’ Dual Enrollment courses are $15 per credit hour.  You are welcome to pay these fees in the summer or pay them along with your fall fees in August.

• All 12th grade students taking Dual Enrollment classes through J. Sargeant Reynolds who are not on the Associate Degree pathway should plan to attend in person through Friday, May 7, 2027. Following the conclusion of their Dual Enrollment courses on April 22, 2027, there may be an option to arrive late or leave early if they have transportation available. More details will be shared during the spring about this possible option. These students should plan to attend for six weeks during Summer 2026 to complete one Dual Enrollment course (MUS 121, which is a 3 credit course). The dates for this summer course are June 8 – July 16, 2026 (Monday-Tuesday; 8:50 AM-2:56 PM).  June 22 and July 6 are virtual learning days for this course. As a reminder, fees for these students’ Dual Enrollment courses are $15 per credit hour.  You are welcome to pay these fees in the summer or pay them along with your fall fees in August.

• All students taking Dual Enrollment summer courses should note the following attendance policies now.  As a reminder, families were notified before choosing Dual Enrollment course options that summer attendance would be required:

• 11th grade students (please see the information earlier in this email that describes which students take this course) enrolled in SDV 100 (which has a total of  5 in person class meetings) may only miss one day with prior notification and an approved reason.

• 12th grade students enrolled in MUS 121 or CSC 208 (please see the information earlier in this email that describes which students take this course) will have 10 in person class meetings and two virtual asynchronous days.  Students in these courses may miss no more than three days with prior notification and an approved reason.

• 11th grade students (please see the information earlier in this email that describes which students take this course) enrolled in MTH 161 (which has 4 virtual asynchronous days during the last week of the regular school year and 12 in person days over summer) may miss no more than four days with prior notification and an approved reason.

• Approvals of absences must come from Dr. Goranson or Dr. Harmon.

• Failure to meet attendance guidelines may result in students not receiving credit for a course and being unable to remain on their Dual Enrollment pathway.

Reminders for Rising 11th and 12 grade students not taking Dual Enrollment courses in the 2026-27 school year:

• All 11th grade students not enrolled in any Dual Enrollment courses should plan to attend in person through Friday, May 28, 2027.

• All 12th grade students not enrolled in any Dual Enrollment courses should plan to attend in person through Friday, May 7, 2027.

Health/PE 9 and 10 and Economics and Personal Finance courses will not be offered during the summer session at CodeRVA.  Students wishing to enroll in these courses at their own cost through their home zoned school divisions should notify their School Counselor of their intentions.

Speaking of our awesome PTSA, THANK YOU to all the families who donated gift cards for Teacher Appreciation Week!  Your generosity will enable each of our teachers to get a gift card in their door prize gift the week of May 4.  I am so grateful for your support of our staff!

Here is a note from our College & Career Fair Planning Committee:

• Next week, on Wednesday, April 29th, CodeRVA will be hosting its 6th annual College and Career Fair. Students will get the opportunity to meet representatives from various colleges, universities, businesses, and the military to learn more about some of the many options available for students to pursue after high school. Your student will also have the opportunity to attend an information session about various topics in career exploration.

As we look ahead to next week, our landlords at Michael and Son have asked us to pass along a message to families and students to share their concerns about unsafe driving behaviors they are observing.  They specifically mentioned excessive speed and driving on the wrong side of the road.  Since Dr. Harmon and I are sentenced to bus duty each afternoon, there is very little chance we would observe these sorts of behaviors, but if this is you, please know our neighbors are watching.  Have Michael and Son employees called the police on me when I was rebuking them for swearing in front of our students?  Yes.  Would they possibly call the police on you for unsafe driving?  My guess is Yes.  Thank you for doing what you can to help keep our parking lot, streets, and general vicinity safe!

Attention all Class of 2026 Seniors!  As we count down to Graduation on May 15, we will continue to send you various reminders to help you prepare for this milestone event.  All Seniors will receive their tickets to Graduation at Graduation Rehearsal, and all guests must have their tickets in hand when they enter the venue.  No exceptions will be made for lost tickets, forgotten tickets, etc.  Thank you for helping us ensure a smooth and stress free experience for both our staff working at Graduation and the guests there to enjoy it!

Last but not least today, here is a community opportunity  some of our students may be interested in:

• The FBI Richmond Teen Academy gives high school students a behind-the-scenes look at careers in federal law enforcement. Through interactive presentations and demonstrations, students learn about topics like terrorism, cybercrime, public corruption, SWAT operations, and evidence response, while hearing directly from special agents and professional staff about real investigative work.  The next session will take place on July 8, 2026, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Richmond Field Office. The program is open to rising 9th–12th-grade students for the 2025–2026 school year. Applications, along with any required materials, must be submitted by May 15, 2026.

• President’s Award for Educational Excellence: this award recognizes academic success in the classroom.  Students per specific course who have a 90% or above for a final grade for the current school year who have displayed high motivation, initiative, integrity, intellectual depth, leadership qualities and/or exceptional judgment are recognized.  For Dual Enrollment and fully online courses: World Languages, Economic and Personal Finance, and Health/PE 9 and 10 (due to the variability of the class sections and instructors), the student who has the highest grade in each content area in each grade level will be selected, unless no students with a C or higher in the course exist.

• President’s Award for Educational Achievement: this award recognizes students that show outstanding educational growth, improvement, commitment or intellectual development in their academic subjects. Its purpose is to encourage and reward students who give their best effort, often in the face of special obstacles.  This award is specifically for students enrolled in in-person, CodeRVA courses.

• The top 5 students in each grade level with the most PBIS referrals are recognized.

• We will also have a few special awards to distribute from outside partners.

We have two new items for you today and two reminders before several community events your family may be interested in.

First, a reminder that the PTSA is still collecting $25 WAWA gift cards to give to the staff during Teacher Appreciation Week.  The deadline to contribute has been extended to April 21.  The gift cards can be dropped off in the Main Office.  Sign up to participate here.

Here are two testing reminders from last week we don’t want you to miss:

• On Monday, April 20, 2026, CodeRVA will be administering the Algebra I SOL to 9th grade students who have selected the Associate Degree pathway. This assessment will be completed digitally, so please remind your student to bring their laptops fully charged on test day. All other students will follow their regular schedule.

• On Tuesday, April 21, 2026, CodeRVA will administer the PC Pro credential exam to 11th grade students on the Classic + Dual Enrollment pathway. Students should bring their laptops fully charged on test day. Transportation will run as normal.

• On Monday, April 20, 7:30-9 p.m. the UR Chamber Ensembles present an evening of music performances by outstanding student instrumentalists, vocalists, and pianists. This concert is free and open to the public. Registration is encouraged.

• On Wednesday, April 22, 7:30-9 p.m., enjoy the talents of the University’s largest ensemble as they perform a varied program of repertoire at this annual Spring Concert. The program will feature Cello Concerto No. 1 in E-flat Major by Dmitri Shostakovich, performed by Artist-in-Residence Dr. Christopher Wagner. This concert is free and open to the public. Registration is encouraged.

• On Thursday, April 16, 5-7 p.m., join the Valentine for the launch celebration of Journey Beyond the Walls: Civil Rights Stories Coloring & Journaling Adventure by local Richmond artist Sir James Thornhill. The event is free but registration is required.

We are back in business after Spring Break!  We have several updates for you as we head into the last 7 weeks of the school year!

First, please note we are making a procedural change to our daily breakfast routine.  Currently students are allowed to take their breakfasts from the cafeteria (or from home) and eat them in the Open Spaces, but because we have seen a consistent increase in messes and trash left behind after students finish eating, we will need to adjust this practice for the remainder of the school year.  Effective Monday, April 13, all breakfasts (whether purchased from school or brought from home) must be consumed in the cafeteria.  Teachers and staff will redirect students who have food in the Open Spaces before school back to the cafeteria if students forget.  Unfortunately our efforts to remind students individually (and in some cases teachers have even been going to find students to ask them to clean up after themselves) have not worked.  We prefer to have a more flexible system when it comes to meals, but we will make this change for the remainder of the year and monitor our students for improvement.  If cleanliness throughout the school does not improve, we will no longer allow any food to be consumed outside of the cafeteria at all during the day.  We hope that students will be more courteous to the school environment instead and will make more focused efforts to clean up any spills, throw away trash, etc. so that we do not have to so drastically modify our procedures.  Thank you for your help in reinforcing these expectations to your Raptors.

Looking ahead to Flex Day next week, check out what our School Counseling Department has planned:

• Our School Counselors will be working with 9th-graders to help them set up their College Board accounts. They will need a College Board account to take the PSAT next year as 10th-graders.

• Our GRASP advisor, Joyce King, will be speaking with 11th-graders about financial aid opportunities and scholarships as they prepare for their Senior year.

• Our final round of Mock Interviews is approaching for our second cohort of 11th Grade interns and interviewers for 11th Grade Internship Mock Interviews are needed. This round of interviews will take place Wednesday and Thursday, May 27 and 28, 2026. The designated time slot is 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. each day, but we can also accommodate other times if needed. We welcome our volunteers to interview for the entire block of time or a portion of the block. We also welcome both virtual and in-person interviews.

• Each student’s mock interview is approximately 15 minutes. A list of questions (along with a scoring rubric) will be provided at least one week prior to the interviews, so there is very little preparation time involved in this process. If you or someone in your professional network might be interested in this opportunity, please feel free to share these details with them. To serve as an interviewer, please contact our Work-Based Learning Coordinators Lanae Dowe and Adom Whitaker.

Here is a copy of the message previously sent to Juniors and Seniors about this Friday’s Prom in case you need any last minute reminders!

• If your student is interested in attending the 2026 Junior/Senior Prom, please see the information below.  In addition, please help us keep this event a fun night of joyful memories by ensuring students and their guests do not arrive at Prom under the influence of and/or smelling of marijuana/alcohol.  Students suspected of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol will not be admitted to Prom; no refunds will be issued; students will be referred to the Virginia Union University Police providing security for our event; and will be subject to school-based discipline.

• Our Junior/Senior CodeRVA Prom will be held Friday, April 17, 2026 at Virginia Union University’s Living and Learning Center from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM. (Please use the Richmond Police Training Academy for the GPS address, 1202 West Graham Road, Richmond, VA 23220. Students will use the entrance to VUU directly across the street at the intersection of West Graham Road and School Road.)  All students must leave the facility promptly at 10 PM.

• Tickets for Seniors will be $15, while tickets for Juniors and guests will be $20. (Please note: students with any outstanding school fees may not purchase Prom tickets or attend as a guest until all fees have been paid. Please email our Office Manager, Mrs. Melody Krupnik, at melody.krupnik@coderva.org if you have been receiving fee-related messages and need to pay or request a fee waiver form.)

• The theme for Prom is “Alice in Wonderland.” As you shop, please remember that semi-formal attire is required. Student outfits must include either a suit or tuxedo to include a shirt and tie OR a dress with appropriate coverage (must extend to the mid-thigh when standing, sitting, or engaging in physical activity and should not have plunging necklines or backs) AND school appropriate shoes. Clothing that is see-through or torn/cut/ripped to expose the chest, midriff, any area traditionally covered by undergarments or clothing that reveals undergarments themselves is not acceptable. All garments should also meet other dress code expectations in the Standards for Student Conduct. If students are in doubt whether or not an outfit is appropriate, show an administrator a picture of the outfit. Inappropriately dressed students may be refused admittance into the Prom, and no refunds will be issued.  Please be aware we have new and/or gently used gowns and semi-formal wear available for students to browse at school.  Any students interested in shopping should contact their School Counselor.

• Tickets will be available for purchase (in person purchases only) during breakfast and during all lunches on the following dates: April 6 – 15. No tickets will be sold after April 15; there will be no exceptions to this deadline. Students may purchase tickets using cash (please bring exact change if you can), check (made payable to CodeRVA Regional High School), or credit card. Students who choose to pay with a credit card will be charged a small processing fee.

• Any student wishing to purchase a guest ticket for a non-CodeRVA guest must submit a properly completed Prom 2026 Guest Form to Ms. L. Dowe prior to the purchase. Printed guest forms are available at the front desk starting Monday, April 6.

Here is a copy of a message previously sent to the Class of 2026 on 4.7.26 about next month’s Graduation ceremony:

• As a reminder, the Graduation ceremony for the Class of 2026 will be on Friday, May 15, 2026 at 10:00 AM at St. Peter Baptist Church (2040 Mountain Rd, Glen Allen, VA 23060). St. Peter Baptist Church has two seating locations: the main seating area (which is handicapped accessible) and the balcony seating area (which is not handicapped accessible). The balcony seating area can only be accessed by a set of stairs.

• Each member of the Class of 2026 will have nine (9) tickets to the Graduation ceremony in the main seating area. If your family has additional ticket requests, please email Ms. Heath at lindsay.heath@coderva.org with those requests no later than May 1, 2026.  PLEASE NOTE: All additional tickets issued (beyond the 9 given to graduates) will be for seats in the balcony seating area.  We cannot guarantee groups larger than 9 can be seated together.

• Herff Jones will be at CodeRVA on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, to distribute caps and gowns. As caps and gowns arrive, please do not decorate caps or add to gowns.  Only standard caps and gowns will be permitted during the Graduation ceremony. Please try on your gown to make sure it fits. If there is a sizing issue, please work directly with the Herff Jones representatives to get the correct gown. Herff Jones is mailing graduation announcements to homes of students. If you do not receive announcements within the week, please inform Ms. Heath at lindsay.heath@coderva.org.

• Remember all graduates of the Class of 2026 must attend a mandatory Graduation practice on Thursday, May 14, 2026. Transportation for this event will be provided through regular bus routes or students who drive may drive themselves, but all students must be on site no later than 9 AM.  All Seniors will be permitted to leave upon the completion of Graduation practice and the handing out of Graduation tickets and regalia (as applicable), but they are welcome to remain until the end of the Yearbook Signing Party.  After that event concludes, all Seniors must leave campus.

• Lastly, please note students with any outstanding school fees or technology obligations will not be issued graduation tickets until all fees have been paid and technology obligations have been settled. Associate Degree Seniors are scheduled to turn in devices on Thursday, April 23, 2026, at the conclusion of their final class. Associate Degree Seniors with outstanding technology obligations have been notified individually.  Classic Pathway and Applied with DE Seniors will turn in devices on Friday, May 8th at the conclusion of their final class.

• Blue Sky Fund 2026 Outdoor Leadership Institute | Details Page is currently accepting applications from students in grades 9-12 for their Outdoor Leadership Institute. The institute empowers high school students through transformative outdoor experiences. Participants develop leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving skills while engaging in challenging adventures like hiking, camping, and environmental service projects.

• If you live in the City of Richmond, please join us for the 2nd Neighborhood & Civic Association Summit on Monday, April 20, 2026, from 5:30–7:30 p.m. at Main Street Station (1500 E. Main St.).  This citywide event will bring together neighborhood leaders, residents, and City staff for an evening of connection and collaboration, featuring Neighborhood 101 workshops, City services, a resource fair, food, music, and more.  Please share this invitation with your networks—it’s a great opportunity for residents to connect with civic associations and access City resources.

We’re currently recruiting high school students for our TEEM program, a 4-week cybersecurity experience where students complete guided coursework while being mentored by college students studying cybersecurity at partner universities.  The program is designed to be engaging and accessible, giving students early exposure to cybersecurity while connecting them with near-peer mentors who are actively pursuing the field.

• Student Benefits:

The State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV), in partnership with the VCU Center on Transition Innovation and Reynolds Community College, will host a Statewide Transition Fair for students with disabilities on May 15, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. This event is open to students in public school divisions supported by the Virginia Department of Education and Level Up Virginia.  The Transition Fair will provide students with the opportunity to engage directly with representatives from colleges, training programs, community organizations, and agencies offering postsecondary education and transition-related services. Exhibitors will host vendor tables, share information about available programs, and help students explore pathways aligned with their goals.

We will have lots of fun activities on the Cary St. Field including a dunk tank and 40′ inflatable obstacle course!  We will also have a variety of community partners and VCU partners hosting tables to share health and wellness information.  The event is FREE for everyone.   Food trucks will be onsite and there is a cost associated with the food.  We hope your friends and family will attend the event!

We are just one week away from Spring Break, which means when we return we will be in one of the busiest seasons in a high school, and we will have only 8 more Mondays in the 2025-26 school year.  I hope all our Raptors will take time this weekend to check out their Year Long grades in Canvas and make changes (as needed) to their work habits in April and May.

Check out what our School Counseling Department has planned for this upcoming Flex Day:

• Our School Counselors will hold an open reflection forum for 12th graders to share their favorite moments with each other over the last 4 years. Seniors will also share “what they wish they knew,” and their wisdom will be passed down to the underclass students.

• Our Reynolds Community College Career Coaches will work with our future Dual Enrollment Sophomores on their applications to Reynolds Community College.

• Our GRASP advisor, Joyce King, will be available to meet with Seniors and will contact Senior families regarding financial aid opportunities.

• Our Economics and Personal Finance teacher, Ms. Boor, will be conducting a work session with EPF students who need to catch up on assignments.

Here is some information from the Virginia Department of Education we have been asked to pass along.  You may notice a new link on our School Counselors’ page on our website: Parent & Caregiver Resources for Self-Harm, Suicide, & Violence Prevention | Virginia Department of Education.  The VDOE would also like you to be aware of LockandTalk.org and the new legislation of § 18.2-56.2  or Allowing Access to Firearms by Children:

A. It shall be unlawful for any person to recklessly leave a loaded, unsecured firearm in such a manner as to endanger the life or limb of any child under the age of fourteen. Any person violating the provisions of this subsection shall be guilty of a Class 1 misdemeanor.

B. It shall be unlawful for any person knowingly to authorize a child under the age of twelve to use a firearm except when the child is under the supervision of an adult. Any person violating this subsection shall be guilty of a Class 1 misdemeanor. For purposes of this subsection, “adult” shall mean a parent, guardian, person standing in loco parentis to the child or a person twenty-one years or over who has the permission of the parent, guardian, or person standing in loco parentis to supervise the child in the use of a firearm.

All of you should have received a phone call and text yesterday to notify you that your student was sent home with a printed report card.  For those families still owing their 2025-26 school fees, we also attached a reminder to the report card.  Please be aware any unpaid fees from this year will roll over to the next school year.  Seniors with outstanding fees are not able to attend Prom or walk at Graduation.

Unfortunately I need to start today’s message with a reminder to the families of our male students.  We have seen a recent increase in damage to our restrooms, which is extremely disappointing as we head into what should be a celebratory time of year with Spring Break around the corner and the imminent end of the school year.  Although we have an excellent security camera system, for obvious reasons there are no cameras in restrooms.  We rely on students to report any damage they see occurring or any damage they find when they enter a restroom.  Having students report concerns immediately helps us avoid watching unnecessary camera footage and assists us in resolving any potential safety concerns.  As a reminder, any student who damages school property will receive consequences (which may include financial restitution) and any student who witnesses inappropriate behavior and fails to report it may also receive a consequence.  Each person at CodeRVA has the opportunity to make our school a safe, clean, and orderly place to learn.  Thank you for helping to remind your student of the importance of being a good citizen of our small school community.

• RUN OR WALK THE 5K! We need participants! Challenge your friends, bring your family, beat your best time, or just get out to get some fresh air and exercise. To signup go to https://coderva.givebacks.com/shop CodeRVA students register for free. You can show up even if you haven’t registered!

• BE A VENDOR at the Spring Festival after the race on March 14th! Do you sell any items or services that you want to hawk? Code RVA students can host a vendor table for $5 (siblings/friends from other schools can host a table for $10). Students are responsible for set up/clean up and must provide all supplies. Students can keep all proceeds from their sales. Vendor sign up forms are available at school in the front lobby.

• VOLUNTEER to help with the event. We will need people to help set up for the race, cheer on racers and point them in the right direction, hand out water and post-race snacks, sell meals afterwards, run festival events, and clean up at the end of the day. This will be our biggest event of the year so we need plenty of help to make it run smoothly. Go to Givebacks to sign up as a volunteer.

• COME TO THE EVENT AND BRING YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY! We would love to see a big crowd come out to support the 5K participants and then have fun with games, activities, vendors, food, and music! We have so many great things planned so we want this to be a day for all to enjoy!

Here is one last reminder that on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, CodeRVA will be administering the Writing LPA to all 9th grade students during rotations 1 and 2. This assessment will be completed digitally, so please remind your student to bring their laptops fully charged on test day.  All other grade levels will follow their regular schedule; however, they should check their calendar invites for possible location changes.  This is the first of three parts required to complete this assessment, while the second and third parts are taken in tenth grade. For students who are absent on Tuesday, a make-up day is scheduled for Thursday, March 12.  This assessment will be used as part of students’ writing portfolios that will serve as their End of Course (EOC) Writing SOL, and upon their successful completion, will result in a verified credit in writing, which is required for graduation.  Our students have been working hard over the past several weeks to prepare for this assessment, and we are confident that they will be successful! Here is a message from the VDOE you might be interested in.  I would love to have all our happy CodeRVA families to consider filling out the survey and sharing something positive about CodeRVA Regional High School specifically.  We could benefit from long-term annual funding from the VDOE, and who better to advocate than our families who know the high quality experience we provide.  

• Commonwealth Listening Tour: The Virginia Department of Education and the Secretary of Education are hosting a series of listening sessions across the Commonwealth to hear from Virginians about how we can highlight successes and work together to strengthen public education by supporting educators and students. 

• The Commonwealth Listening Tour invites division leaders, educators, parents, students, and community members to share their current education experiences and contribute to conversations about how state leaders should approach ensuring every child receives a high-quality education and the supports necessary for success. Listening Session discussion topics will include:

  • Identifying what’s working well and where challenges remain;

  • Shaping ongoing supports in literacy and math instruction;

  • Understanding how well students are prepared for college or careers after high school;

  • Considering how the state evaluates and supports schools through accountability and accreditation processes; and

  • Discussing effective strategies to recruit and retain world class teachers, school leaders, and school support staff.

• Attendees are encouraged to register in advance, as audience space is limited. Others may prefer to provide feedback to the VDOE via an online survey. 

As a reminder, we will be sending your student’s report card home with them in a paper format each marking period this year except MP6.  Stay tuned for when that piece of paper will arrive home in their careful little claws!

As we celebrate Women’s History Month in March, here are the slides our National Honor Society students created for students to view during Raptor Rotation.  How fitting they chose to profile a woman whose picture I have in my office.  Angela Y. Davis’ famous quote is one that has guided me for almost a decade: “I am no longer accepting the things I cannot change. I am changing the things I cannot accept.”

I hope your family has enjoyed the lovely weather we have had this week or can get out this weekend into the sunshine.  We look forward to seeing our Raptors back on campus on Monday!

The VOWS Foundation, a Richmond-based nonprofit dedicated to academic support and youth development, is offering PrepWorks Academy, a free one-on-one tutoring program for students in grades 3–10. The program focuses on strengthening reading, math, critical thinking, and building student confidence in a supportive, stress-free environment.  Students receive 45-minute sessions led by certified teachers, trained volunteers, and local college students. Tutoring is available Tuesday–Thursday from 5:30–7:30 PM and Saturdays from 10 AM–1 PM at a convenient, bus-accessible location.
