HBCU tour inspires students
The tour included Morgan State and Bowie State universities in Maryland, and Howard University and the University of the District of Columbia in Washington, D.C. They entered buildings, were able to watch some classes and learn more about each campus.

PHS celebrates seniors at breakfast
In all, 98 students who are on track to finish high school with a cumulative average of 80 or better and their families were invited to the breakfast, held at the school’s newly renovated cafeteria. That includes 27 who have an average of 90 or better.

Museum trip connects students with Black history
On the final day of Black History Month, a group of 43 Poughkeepsie High School students traveled by bus to Washington, D.C. to visit the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture. The massive building is filled with moving imagery, tangible artifacts and interactive displays.

Aviation Club takes flight, connecting students with career skills
The program uses the three flight simulators installed at the school before the start of this school year as part of the district’s investment in the AFJROTC program. But, fun and games are only a part of what the club is all about. The main idea is to “offer the world of flight to Poughkeepsie High School students” and connect them with a “plethora of careers and opportunities in aviation.”

PHS retires jersey of all-time leading basketball scorer
Terraya Richardson, a 1999 graduate, was presented two framed jerseys during a ceremony before the girls basketball team hosted Horace Greeley. Her number will also be permanently displayed on a wall in the building.

Just before school break to celebrate the holidays, the Poughkeepsie High School Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps, or AFJROTC, celebrated the anniversary of the program’s official launch in December 2014 and the instructor who has been here since the beginning.

PHS student saves life using lesson learned in school
On Dec. 6, Victor Nelson III, a Poughkeepsie High School junior, saved a man from a drug overdose in a barbershop by administering Narcan. He had learned how to do it in Sean Lauder’s health class this semester. After the lesson, Lauder supplied each student two doses of Narcan and advised them to carry one around with them – you never know when you may need it.
