Students deliver Valentine's Day cards to nursing home, practice ethical lessons
Students in Jessika Pisano’s ELA12 and Creative Writing classes brought joy to seniors this Valentine’s Day while practicing the values and skills they’ve discussed in class.
Around 80 students across five classes created Valentine’s Day cards for the 160 residents of The Grand Rehabilitation and Nursing at River Valley. A group of around 20 then delivered the cards to the delight of the residents and staff.
“In ELA 12, we are currently exploring moral dilemmas and have had various discussions surrounding morality, values and ethics. We have spoken about right versus wrong on a society level and part of doing what is considered ‘right’ is paying kindness forward to others,” Pisano said. “In Creative Writing, we have begun exploring descriptive writing and imagery to enhance writing. Students were encouraged to be creative including images and artistic flair, while also writing uplifting messages.”
Each student made at least two cards, though some made more. There were enough leftover that students were able to give them to staff members, as well. The facility limited the number of visitors they could accommodate to 20, so Pisano selected the first students who submitted their field trip forms.
“The kids were happy to see they could make someone's day with a simple gesture,” the teacher said. “Many of the residents were overjoyed by receiving a card and showed gratitude. The students said it was special to bring a smile to the elderly people's faces. I felt a lot of pride as their teacher to watch my students interact with the residents and give back to the community.”
