What is Advanced Placement/College Board?

The College Board is a not-for-profit membership association whose mission is to connect students to college success and opportunity. The College Board is committed to the principles of excellence and equity, and that commitment is embodied in all of its programs, services, activities, and concerns.  The Advanced Placement (AP) program provides rigorous academic coursework in the major subject fields, with course content designed at a college level.  Courses are offered in English, social studies, science, world languages, math, and fine arts.  AP courses are open to any student who is interested in academic rigor.  AP courses are recognized for college credit by many universities in the United States and abroad.  All AP course syllabuses are approved by the College Board AP Course Audit.

Teachers of Pre-AP and AP courses attend rigorous training and professional development to prepare to teach the content and skills required by College Board to be in their courses.  Collaborating with colleagues and academic professors from colleges and universities allows teachers to continuously develop their courses so that students are better prepared for post-secondary experiences.

AP Exams

AP Exams are given every May. 

It is the expectation that every student enrolled in AP courses takes the AP exam for the course. 

It is important for your student to schedule ahead of time so that they can make sure they are on campus for their exam.  You can view the schedule for AP exams by clicking the link below.

Scores offer a recommendation on how qualified students are to receive college credit and placement.

  • 5 = extremely well qualified
  • 4 = well qualified
  • 3 = qualified
  • 2 = possibly qualified
  • 1 = no recommendation

AP Exam Scores are now only available online.

College Board Awards

The AP Program recognizes high school students who have demonstrated outstanding college-level achievement through AP courses and exams with the AP Scholar Awards. Although there is no monetary award, each award-winning student receives a certificate, and the award is acknowledged on any AP score report that is sent to colleges after the award has been conferred.

AP Scholar Awards are added to students' online score reports in late August. If you earned an award, you will receive a notification of the award by email. Award Structure:

  • AP Scholar: Granted to students who receive grades of 3 or higher on three or more exams
  • AP Scholar with Honor: Granted to students who receive an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams
  • AP Scholar with Distinction: Granted to students who receive an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams
  • National AP Scholar: Granted to students in the United States who receive an average grade of at least 4 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams.

Last year, Dobie had 67 students earn AP Scholar recognition.

Pasadena ISD PAP and AP Contract

Pasadena ISD has implemented a PAP and AP Contract.  Students taking Pre-AP and AP courses review the contract with their parent/guardian and then initial and sign the contract – agreeing to abide by the statements (listed below).

  • I understand that my PreAP/AP course will require a great amount of independent work and study on my part, including a commitment to work on class requirements during vacations, a possible summer assignment, attendance at Saturday review sessions, maintaining excellent class attendance, and managing my out-of-class time effectively.
  • I understand the standard in Pre-AP/AP classes that work will be submitted by established deadline.
  • I am expected to take the AP exam for all of my AP courses.
  • I understand I may exit only at the end of the first six week grading period or at the end of the first semester.  A grade of a B or a C at the end of a formal grading period is not considered a valid reason to leave the PAP/AP program.  College and University admissions officers review transcripts very carefully, and students successfully completing PAP/AP coursework during their high school experiences are more likely to secure entry into the college of their choice, even with a grade of a B or C.  Research also shows these students experience greater success in college and graduate at a much greater rate than their peers.
  • I understand that I will be expected to maintain a high level of academic integrity
  • To exit a PreAP/AP class I must follow the exit policy.
  • I understand that my parents must complete the exit application. 
  • I understand that a PreAP/AP teacher may recommend my removal from a PreAP/AP course if my average falls below 65 at the end of the first six weeks or the end of the first semester.
