The Pasadena ISD Board of Trustees has been named the Texas Computer Education Association (TCEA) 2020-2021 School Board of the Year.

TCEA, a non-profit organization that supports the use of technology in education, annually presents the award to a school board that “recognizes the importance of technology in the teaching and learning process and actively promotes the use of technology throughout the district,” according to the organization website.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. DeeAnn Powell praised the school board for their continuous leadership in supporting innovative technology programs and resources in the district.

“It is such an honor and a pleasure to work with a group of individuals who are constantly putting the needs of students first,” said Dr. Powell. “This student-first mentality has resulted in the board’s continuous support of technology initiatives and resources that prepare students for college and the workplace; and has transformed PISD into a robust technology-driven environment.”

TCEA made the announcement just on the heels of Board Appreciation Month, which started on January 1 and annually celebrates school boards across the state of Texas for their contributions to the districts they serve.

The board was selected by a panel of judges based on an application packet that was submitted on behalf of the board. The application highlighted the board’s support of the district’s 1-to-1 technology initiative, Personalized Learning program and the distribution of computer devices to students during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The application also included a summary of accomplishments from the past decade and supporting documents such as technology plans, school bond election materials, policy updates and a video.

The Pasadena ISD Board of Trustees will be recognized by the TCEA during an awards ceremony in February.

“We are so thrilled that the TCEA chose to honor our school board,” said Vickie Morgan, Pasadena ISD Board President. “Our board has been committed to integrating technology into learning as a means of ensuring equal access to educational tools for all students. We want to thank Dr. Powell and her team for working tirelessly over the years to bring this vision to light.”

TCEA is a global, nonprofit, member-based organization that supports the use of technology in education. Founded in 1980, TCEA has been playing a vital role in increasing technology funding and access for PreK-16 schools for nearly 40 years. Their 57,000-member association is led by a grassroots board of directors—all professional educators. TCEA’s resources support educators in the field who are enhancing curriculum with digital tools.
