Four ensembles from our district recently showcased their talent at the prestigious NYSSMA Majors Festival, earning top honors and making our school community proud.

The 5th and 6th grade advanced bands each earned the highest possible rating - gold with distinction—under the direction of Ms. Macy and Mr. Devassy, respectively. The combined 5th and 6th grade orchestra, led by Ms. Muller Pinnola, received a gold rating, while the middle level band, under the direction of Mr. Giannetta, earned a silver rating.

The NYSSMA Majors Festival brings together large school ensembles from across New York State to perform for a panel of expert adjudicators. Groups are evaluated on musicality, technique and overall preparation. Our students rose to the occasion, demonstrating not only technical excellence but also a deep passion for performance.

Congratulations to all our young musicians and their dedicated directors on this outstanding achievement.

Oyster Bay-East Norwich CSD is proud to announce that Vernon fourth graders Katie Dunne and Kira Scanlon earned 1st place in the Elementary Division of the 2025 Long Island Spring Stock Market Game. Their outstanding achievement showcases not only their strategic thinking and teamwork but also the power of early financial education.

The Stock Market Game, hosted by the SIFMA Foundation in collaboration with local partners, provides students with a hands-on introduction to the world of finance. Using a virtual $100,000, participants manage a simulated investment portfolio, gaining real-world insights into the stock market, economics and financial planning.

Throughout the competition, Katie and Kira conducted research, tracked global news and made strategic decisions to maximize their returns - all while working within the structure of a real-time trading simulation. Students in the program explore socially responsible investments aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

The Stock Market Game is more than a competition - it’s a comprehensive financial literacy program designed to build critical skills. It integrates lessons in math, economics and personal finance with engaging online tools and curriculum that align with New York State learning standards. Students develop analytical and decision-making skills, while teachers benefit from access to more than 1,000 resources supporting STEM and 21st-century learning.

Through programs like this, the SIFMA Foundation and its partners are helping young learners build a strong foundation in financial literacy - skills that will benefit them for years to come. Congratulations to Katie and Kira on their remarkable achievement!

OBEN’s Paint Night celebrates creativity, community and student leadership

Oyster Bay High School chapter of the National Art Honor Society, in collaboration with K-2 art teacher Ms. Meredith Brustman, hosted a spectacular Paint Night. thumbnail266393

On May 16, the Oyster Bay High School chapter of the National Art Honor Society, in collaboration with K-2 art teacher Ms. Meredith Brustman, hosted a spectacular Paint Night at Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School. The event was a tremendous success, selling out thanks to the enthusiastic support of families and community members, and serving as a standout fundraiser for the district’s arts programs.

Now in its third year, Paint Night has become a cherished tradition in the district. Proceeds from the event will directly support student-artists by covering membership dues for both the National Art Honor Society and the National Junior Art Honor Society. The funds will also help provide graduation cords, certificates and pins, as well as a $500 scholarship for a graduating senior pursuing the arts. In addition, the fundraiser will support educational field trips to museums and other cultural institutions, enriching students’ learning experiences through direct engagement with the arts.

A highlight of the evening was high school junior Julia Milos, a National Art Honor Society member, who led elementary students and their families through a step-by-step painting project. Her poise, creativity and leadership inspired all in attendance and demonstrated the meaningful mentorship opportunities that the arts can foster.

The event’s success was made possible by the collaboration and dedication of several OBHS students, including Perla Martinez Nieto, Leonel Escoto Soto, Erika Velasquez and Delmy (Daniella) Zavala Chicas. Special thanks also go to Ms. Randazzo, advisor to the National Art Honor Society, for her ongoing guidance and support.

Paint Night was a celebration not only of creativity, but of community, leadership and the transformative power of the arts. Congratulations to everyone who helped make the evening such a memorable experience.
