Kindergarten Snapshot

Wondering what happens all day in kindergarten?  KJM Video & R. Herskovitz Consulting spent time with the kindergarten classrooms at Jackson Street School to document the rich learning and activities that happen there.

The crew spent a whole day following the teachers and students in classrooms and on the playground.  They were able to document authentic learning activities as well as some of the fun and joy that happens on a daily basis in a kindergarten classroom.

School Local Northampton will continue to film at Jackson Street School to create short videos about other grades as well as family & caregiver experiences.   They currently have videos created for Leeds and are working with Bridge Street & RKF Ryan Road as well. All School Local Northampton videos can be found on their page and Youtube channel.

Please share these wonderful snapshots widely.

Students at Northampton join community members at the Lily Library for Scrabble games–this time, Connecting Point featured an article about them.

Evan, mentioned in the news clip, and JFK teammates, Gordon and Robbie just competed in the two-day North American School Scrabble Championship in Philadelphia at the end of April.  Teacher, Ben Greenwood, was asked to direct the event this year and was happy to be able to award the JFK team two trophies:  Highest Losing Score and Highest Play in their division.

Three weeks earlier, teammates Gordon and Jack had a 5-0 record at the New England School Scrabble Championship in CT.

The Jackson Street second grade investigated how seeds become new plants.  One part of the process is the dispersal of the seed from the plant.  The teacher’s explanation is below. Follow the link above to see the students’ full work.

Seed Dispersal: many plants start as seeds! there are a lot of different types of seeds, all with unique shapes. In order for more plants to grow, seeds need to move away from the parent plant and grow into a new plant. Plants depend on wind, water, and animals to disperse their seeds. Students modeled seed dispersal by creating three different seed flyers including a glider, a rotocopter, and a spinner and investigated how each seed flyers' structure helped the seed disperse and hopefully keep it out of the "zone of darkness"!

This past week 1st and 4th grade got together for a joint activity.  4th graders helped the 1st grade students learn about measurement as part of the math curriculum.  Then small groups split up to read together.  Here 4th graders are doing a read aloud for their 1st grade reading buddies.
