April 3, 2024

Dear NCSD Parents/Guardians,

As you are aware, a total solar eclipse will take place on Monday, April 8, 2024. The eclipse will be visible in our area beginning at 12:35 PM, will reach totality at 1:55 PM, and will conclude at 3:14 PM. While this phenomenon is a spectacular sight, the safety of our students is our primary concern.

The solar eclipse must be viewed ONLY with proper eye protection to avoid any potential eye damage. Regular or prescription sunglasses are NOT approved eye protection for a solar eclipse.

With the safety of our students in mind, we will follow the procedures outlined below:

•       Students in PreK -1 will remain indoors from 12:15 - dismissal time. All activities will be conducted indoors during this time.

•       Students in Grades 2-12 may be offered the educational opportunity to view the eclipse from outside with teacher supervision using proper eye protection that meets the ISO 12312-2 international standard/protection level. Grades/Classes providing a viewing opportunity will send a notification to parents. If you do not wish for your child to participate, please notify your child's teacher.

All school sponsored in-school and after-school activities between 12:15 PM and 3:15 PM will take place indoors, unless it is for educational eclipse lessons. Class changes, dismissals and other similar procedures will continue as scheduled; however, students will be reminded not to look at the sun.

Parents, we ask for your help in reminding your children of all necessary precautions related to the solar eclipse that must be taken to prevent potential eye damage.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Sincerely,

Josh Perkins, Superintendent
