All school bus drivers hired by NACS must meet the standards developed by NACS and Indiana State laws.
Motor Vehicle Records
All applicants must be 21 years of age and hold a valid driver's license with no suspensions. A Driving History from the BMV is available at www.in.gov/bmv and is required to be submitted with the application.This search checks for any major violations (DUI, OWI, racing, etc.) and any minor moving violations (tickets, accidents, etc.).
Physical Examination All CDL license carriers are required by State and Federal laws to have a semi-annual physical which reveals the physical and mental capabilities to safely operate a school bus.
Drug Testing All employees who perform safety-sensitive functions defined by federal law as drivers of vehicles having a gross vehicle weight of 26,001 or more, or who operate vehicles designed to transport more that fifteen (15) persons are covered under this policy. Safety-sensitive positions are subject to random and reasonable suspicion drug and alcohol testing during employment.
All new employees in safety-sensitive positions will be required to undergo a pre-employment drug and alcohol test.
Training NACS has an excellent training program.
- All trainees must complete a 20 hour course conducted by the Department of Education. This is a requirement to receive a "yellow card" which permits a bus driver to transport children.
- The trainee will be required to pass 4 written tests at the Bureau of Motor Vehicles. A NACS bus trainer will provide a CDL manual and highlight the necessary information to be studied.
- All trainees will be required to pass a skills course test, road test and a 200 point bus inspection test performed by the State. NACS will assign a bus trainer to prepare the trainee for this testing.
- All trainees will receive 20 hours of classroom training developed by the School Bus Safety Company. This training includes; safety basics, defensive driving, safe bus stops, student management, etc.
- A School Bus Certificate will be granted once a driver completes the required steps above, completes 8 hours of driving & 4 hours of observation of a school bus, and passes both Federal D.O.T. and Indiana's physical and a physical agility test.
