Inclement Weather Q&A

  • Why aren’t we canceling school when it’s this cold? Temperatures and conditions do not change much in two hours.

    • The extra two hours allows students to be seen better in blustery conditions as many use our BusRight app and leave their houses right as the bus pulls up.

    • It allows our buses more time to warm up, make sure all are operating properly (including unfreezing doors and stop arms) and fix any concerns.

    • A later start time avoids rush hour providing more flexibility and less pressure for our drivers.

  • Why can’t we have as many eLearning days as we need?

    • IDOE allows three eLearning days per year; any days over will need to be made up. Two hour delays do not count toward our three allotted days.

    • We also believe that children need to be in school as much as possible.

  • What measures does the district take to keep our children safe on inclement weather days?

    • Transportation leaders review the weather forecasts every evening and morning as Indiana weather changes frequently. If there is fog or any other possible weather concern, the team drives our district roads (including the rural roads) beginning at 4:30 a.m. to personally witness the conditions.

    • The custodial and maintenance teams plan ahead for forecasted adverse weather conditions and prepare our buildings, walkways and parking lots. For example, in the past, the team has laid salt down in all MV parking lots and sidewalks on both the night prior and morning of a two-hour delay.

  • What if I don’t feel it’s safe for my high school student to drive to school?

    • MVCSC respects our parents’/guardians’ decisions in regards to their child’s safety. Riding the bus or a parent/guardian dropping the student off might be an option. If electing to keep their child home for the day, parents/guardians have 10 verified days per school year that can be used at their discretion. See the “Attendance” section in our school handbooks for details on the 10 parent/guardian verified days.

  • I have additional questions. Who should I contact?

    • Please email info@mvcsc.k12.in.us and your request will be sent to the appropriate department or school.
