WT Continues Significant Compensation Increases to Ensure Highly Qualified Diverse Staff in Classrooms

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (November 22, 2024) – On Wednesday, November 13, 2024, the Washington Township School Board approved a resolution to significantly increase staff compensation.  This decision underscores our unwavering commitment to attracting and retaining high-quality diverse educators who are dedicated to the success of our students.

This pay increase will provide teachers with a well-deserved raise, reflecting the essential role they play in shaping the future of our students and community. This move is part of the district’s ongoing effort to ensure that our educators are compensated competitively, recognizing their hard work and the growing demands of the profession.

“Our teachers are the heart of our schools, and we recognize the vital role they play in fostering student growth and achievement,” said Superintendent Dr. Woodson . “This pay increase is a reflection of our gratitude for their dedication and our commitment to providing the resources and support they need to continue their important work in the classroom.”

The approved salary increases are the result of collaborative efforts between the district and the Washington Township Education Association.  Additionally, the district is dedicated to supporting its educators not only through competitive compensation, but also by offering ongoing professional development, enhancing classroom resources and support, and fostering a positive work environment.

By passing this resolution the board has approved a  $4000 base salary increase and a $1300 one-time stipend for all eligible teachers this school year. This is an 8.5% average increase in total compensation for our teachers in 2024-2025.

This compensation increase continues a series of years in Washington Township where teachers have seen the highest salary growth in the history of the district. Many teachers who have been with the district over the last 7 school years have seen their base salary increase over $20,000, have received over $5000 in stipends, and have seen no increase in the cost of health, dental, or vision insurance.

Additionally, the Washington Township School Board also approved substantial compensation increases for non-teaching staff including instructional assistants, cafeteria staff, school resource officers, custodians, transportation staff, and many other important roles.  Many of these staff also saw an increase in paid time off and retirement benefits this year as well.

These staff compensation increases were made possible in part by the significant increases in student enrollment, over 800 students in the last two years. This significant surge in enrollment across all grade levels is a testament to the great things happening in our classrooms and affords us the opportunity to provide even greater compensation increases to teachers and staff than were previously planned.  The district is thrilled that parents are choosing WTS for their child’s education!

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (October 16, 2024) – At the October 16 school board meeting, the Board of Education of the Metropolitan School District of Washington Township appointed Dr. Sean G. Taylor as the new Superintendent of schools, beginning July 1, 2025.

Dr. Taylor has been serving the Washington Township School district in several different capacities for the past sixteen years, most recently as the Associate Superintendent for Washington Township Schools. Prior to that appointment in 2020, Dr. Taylor served as a middle school and elementary school principal for over 8 years in Washington Township. He also served as an assistant principal, elementary school teacher, and middle school English Language Arts teacher prior to coming to Washington Township Schools in 2009.

During his four school years as Associate & Assistant Superintendent for Washington Township Schools, he has worked with great teams of educators across many different departments of the District. A fierce advocate for public education, Dr. Taylor believes that when a school community of diverse stakeholders collectively commits to improving student achievement, all students can and will succeed. He also believes that central to that collective commitment is exemplary leadership.

The vision for his leadership is to ensure we have high impact schools for all children by simplifying, aligning, and supporting many areas that impact teaching and learning in our schools. Whether it is curriculum, technology, policy, student services, safety or transportation, his priority is to make sure all arrows are pointing in the same direction to best serve our future-ready panthers and families in the most cohesive and collaborative manner.

“This is an exciting time for our district as we have worked to find our next Superintendent to replace Dr. Woodson upon her retirement next summer” said Washington Township School Board President, Mr. William Turner.

“Hiring for the role of Superintendent is a direct and sole responsibility of the board.   The board took this responsibility seriously and put in many hours during this search process to find our next superintendent, including hiring a search team that helped us select Dr. Taylor” continued Turner.

After a community survey/feedback opportunity in May, the board engaged the University Search Team to assist with the Superintendent hiring process. University Search Team filtered, vetted and

presented applicants to the board. After multiple rounds of interviews, which included phone screening and in-person interviews, Dr. Taylor was selected. The board is energized and excited about Dr. Taylor’s vision to move Washington Township Schools forward.

“I am incredibly honored and excited to step into the role of superintendent for this outstanding district that I have proudly served for the past 16 years in various leadership and principal roles,” said Dr. Taylor. “Having had the privilege of 5 years of exemplary mentorship from our current superintendent, to my work across our school communities, I’ve seen firsthand the dedication, talent, and diversity that make our district truly a destination district. This deep understanding of our district’s strengths, challenges, and opportunities will allow me to help sustain and build upon the excellence we’ve achieved together.”

Taylor has earned three degrees: a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Ball State University, a Master of School Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a Doctoral Degree in Executive Educational Leadership from Indiana University-Bloomington.

Some of his accomplishments include:

  • National Association of School Superintendents Aspiring Superintendent Award

He is also active in the community through the Washington Township Schools Foundation, the Washington Township Community Coalition, Lion Catchers, Student Impact, Young Life, and Westfield Youth Sports.

Dr. Taylor concludes, “I am deeply grateful for this opportunity and the trust that has been placed in me. I look forward to continuing our collective work in fostering academic success, equity, and a thriving learning environment for all students. Together, we will ensure our district continues to be a place where every Panther has the opportunity to reach their full potential.”

We will develop a strategic timeline so that District operations and focus on equitable achievement remain uninterrupted.”

The Board will post the position soon and conduct a comprehensive search process with a final selection of the next Superintendent announcement this Fall. WTS looks forward to having Dr. Woodson serve as Superintendent for the 2024-2025 school year and anticipates a smooth transition into the 2025-2026 school year, with the new Superintendent.
