Allisonville Elementary School has been awarded the Title I Distinguished School Award for exceptional student performance for two or more consecutive years and will receive an academic achievement awards grant under Title I, Section 1117 (b) School Support and Recognition of No Child Left Behind under CFDA #84010a.

The purpose of the Distinguished Schools Program is to recognize and honor those Title I schools that sustain exceptional student performance for two or more consecutive years or make the greatest gains in closing the achievement gap. The program also identifies Title I schools that are models of best practices for other schools of similar demographics.

Allisonville Elementary School will receive a grant award of $50,000.00, and is invited to attend the National Title I Conference in Seattle, Washington January 21-24, 2012.

“We have created a culture that focuses on high achievement for all students at Allisonville.  Our priority is meeting the individual needs of our students,” said Mike Pomerenke, Principal of Allisonville Elementary.

Wednesday, October 17th, acclaimed author Christine Johnson visited Mr. Auslander’s fifth grade class at Allisonville Elementary School, her alma matter.  She spoke about her personal experiences becoming a writer and about her process for writing. Then, she answered many of the children’s thoughtful questions.  Best of all, she stayed for writer’s workshop, where she conferred with each student in the class! Christine’s visit inspired twenty six fifth grade students to become better writers!

Congratulations Allisonville Elementary!!! Three years ago, Allisonville  joined the MSD of Washington Township on a journey to become an International Baccalaureate World School. This is not a task that is easily accomplished. There have been many hours of hard work by every person that makes up our Allisonville family; teachers, administrators, the front office staff, the janitorial staff, the cafeteria staff, and most importantly our students! Students have been on a journey to learn about IB learner profiles, attitudes, and units of study. A transformation has been taking place and today we announce to you that it has ALL paid off. This past week, Allisonville  was informed from the International Baccalaureate World Office that our school has become a fully authorized International Baccalaureate World School!! This is great news!

What does it mean for Allisonville ? It very simply means that we continue the superior academic instruction that we teach every day; we continue supporting our teachers with access to the very best training that the International Baccalaureate World curriculum offers, and our students will now be recognized in the education world as students who are being exposed to the high quality standards and rigor for which the International Baccalaureate is known. What is different is that it is now all official. We are now officially authorized and recognized by International Baccalaureate World Schools. Please take a few moments to explore the International Baccalaureate website to get a deeper understanding of where Allisonville  Elementary is headed www.ibo.org

This is an exciting time in the history of our learning community. We hope that you will celebrate along with us, by attending the MSD of Washington Township School Board meeting on December 12th  at 7:00 pm where a formal announcement and recognition will take place. The following afternoon, December 13th from 3-6:00, families are invited to attend the CEC Winter Open House. This is an annual event, and will celebrate this year the amazing accomplishment of IB Primary Years Program (PYP ) authorization. Students will celebrate this great news at an upcoming all-school convocation. Until then, please consider joining us at either one of the district events, planned for Dec. 12 and Dec. 13. at the Community and Education Center located at 8550 Woodfield Crossing Blvd. 46240. We hope to see you there!

At Allisonville, we know that the only way to become a better reader is to DO it.  Allisonville will be using Book It! as our school-wide reading program from October 1 – March 31, 2012.  We want to encourage ALL students to read for 20 minutes at least 4 times a week.  In return for their efforts, they will become better readers AND be awarded a FREE personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut.  Read more about it here in the Indy Star:

On December 13th, every fifth grade student at Allisonville Elementary will participate in the nationwide Hour of Code.  Code.org, in partnership with Bill Gates, Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg, and many others, has created various tutorials to expose children to writing code.

Learning and writing code is very important because there currently are not enough Americans in the workforce with these computer programming skills, and the gap only continues to grow.  Also, women and minorities are extremely under-represented in the field of computer science.  Teacher at Allisonville Elementary Steve Auslander says, “We want to change that!”

“At Allisonville, we want to plant the seed in the young minds of our fifth graders that this is a possible career path.  Also, as President Obama explained when talking about Hour of Code, we want our students to not just download and ap, we want for them to DESIGN the ap,” continues Mr. Auslander.

Allisonville fifth grade classes will share the school’s laptop cart throughout the day on Friday.  Each student will participate in at least one of the various tutorials, such as the Angry Birds Tutorial, where they will learn code through various lessons, all with the outcome being to program an Angry Bird to catch a Pig.

The goal for this Hour of Code event is to inspire district fifth graders to take action and learn more about computer sciences and coding.

Eight former Allisonville students spent part of their fall break with Mr. Auslander, attending the 2013 Indiana Computer Educators (ICE) Conference in downtown Indianapolis. Sixth graders Maggie Maguire, Avery Walker, Lainey Paynter, Lilly Franzini, Madelyn Colcord, Jackson Breman, Davin Juerling, and Jack Faler all attended the event, with the goal of helping Indiana teachers learn about various apps and websites that might help them better integrate technology into their classroom instruction. Teachers attending the conference know the value of getting students’ perspective on how technology tools help make learning more engaging.  “Our students were born into a high-tech society,” says 5th grade Allisonville teacher Steve Auslander. “Since most aspects of their life embrace the digital age, shouldn’t also their classroom?” To learn more about the ICE conference, click here:
