Journalism
The Journalism for English Learners program is a standard-based program aligned to the
California Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts (2010)
and the
California English Language Development Standards (2012)
intended for students grades 3-5 “at risk” of becoming Long Term English Learners (LTELs). The curriculum is organized in a 10-unit cycle totaling 40 hours of instruction delivered 2 days per week for an average of 4 hours per week. The goal of the program is to advance students’ English language skills and abilities by learning how journalism impacts communities and by providing information that can affect people's’ lives. Although intended as an after school program, the curriculum can be used within the regular school program as an intensive intervention for English Language Development.
Students from the Journalist program were part of various writing projects and field trips. Check out this video to see one of the activities that these students enjoyed during the summer.
