Dear Mayfield Schools Parent/Guardian:
CALL TO ACTION:
I am writing to share important information concerning legislation that is moving quickly through the Ohio Legislature that may have serious consequences for Mayfield City Schools and the community: House Bill 335 Property Tax Reform.
HB 335 proposes to eliminate the collection of inside millage (property taxes) for schools, counties and municipalities. If approved, this means a cut of $8.9 million dollars per year for Mayfield Schools. These funding cuts would begin in January 2026.
In essence, HB 335 WOULD MORE THAN ELIMINATE the school levy Mayfield City School District voters passed in November 2024.
What does this mean for our schools?
This legislation will cause us to cut programs, staff, services and extracurricular programs in our schools. If approved, Mayfield City Schools would begin to identify immediate cuts along with discussing the need for new funding from our community as early as November 2026.
While HB 335 is proposed as a stand-alone bill, the issue is complicated because the legislature also needs to pass HB 96 the budget bill by June 30, 2025. It is possible that changes proposed in HB 335 could be attached to the budget bill.
We are encouraging you to contact our legislators. A sample letter is provided for your use.
Thank you for being an important part of Mayfield City Schools and continuing to support the outstanding programs, services and staff that enrich Every Student. Every Day.
Sincerely,
Dr. Michael J. Barnes
Superintendent
