COVID-19 (CORONAVIRUS) Information & Updates
Updated Covid Guidance for Mabton Schools (Jan 11, 2022)
Updated guidance from the Washington State Department of Health regarding COVID-19 for K-12 schools is impacting the Mabton School District. On Jan. 8, the Department of Health issued updated guidance shortening both isolation and quarantine periods for students from 10 days to 5 days.
Quarantine guidance applies to those who have been identified as close contacts of someone who has tested positive for COVID-19. In order to end quarantine after five days, the individual needs to be without symptoms and will need to supply a negative rapid or PCR test result performed on day 5 of quarantine. Test results will need to be from a health care provider, pharmacy, community-based testing site, health jurisdiction, or from a test taken at one of the Mabton School District test sites. The quarantine timeline starts after the last date of contact with the person who tested positive for COVID-19.
Isolation guidance applies to individuals who have tested positive for COVID-19. Any student or staff member who has tested positive or has symptoms of COVID-19 should isolate at home. This isolation guidance applies regardless of vaccination status. If a student or staff member tests positive for COVID-19, they can return to school when the following criteria are met:
- 5 days have passed since symptoms onset or positive test collection date, if not having symptoms; AND
- No symptoms are present or symptoms are resolving; AND
- No fever within the past 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications.
Students and staff should continue monitoring for symptoms and wearing a well-fitting mask around others through day 10 (days 6-10) both in and out of school, including during extracurricular and athletic activities.
If an individual is having symptoms of COVID-19 and elects not to seek testing, they will need to follow the 10-day isolation guidance.
This updated guidance applies to both students and staff in the Mabton School District. The district is currently working on updating our written guidance with more information. The updated guidance goes into effect in Mabton on Tuesday, Jan. 11.
The District will continue to offer Covid testing for this program as long as tests and resources are available.
Your school COVID coordinator and or school nurse will determine the return date for your child.

Mabton School District wants to share its preparedness, prevention and information plans with students, staff, and families regarding 2019 Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19).
The Washington State Department of Health confirms that there is no evidence that COVID-19 is spreading in Washington at this time, and the immediate risk to the general public in Washington and the United States is considered to be low.
The Department of Health advises school districts to take the same preventative measures it normally would to prevent the spread of viruses during the regular cold and flu season. Common preventative measures recommended for students and staff include:
- Stay home when you are sick and/or running a fever.
- Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom, before eating, and after you blow your nose. If hands are visibly dirty, use soap and water to clean hands.
- If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
- Cover coughs or sneezes with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash and clean hands with soap and water or hand sanitizer (if soap and water are not readily available).
- Get a flu shot during the flu season.
The District’s custodial and maintenance programs will continue to emphasize and implement best practices in cleaning, disinfecting, and sanitizing our schools.
District officials are in regular contact with Yakima County Health District officials and have reviewed emergency response plans should COVID-19 arise locally. If this were to occur, the district’s emergency response plan will follow the direction and guidance of local and state health officials and will immediately be communicated with parents and the greater community.
More information about COVID-19 can be accessed at the links below, or by calling the Washington State Department of Health at 1-800-525-0127, or our local Yakima County Health District at 509-575-4040.
