Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA): A few tips to keep your  child safe online

Lowndes County Public Schools receives funding from Universal Service Administrative Company (USAC) for telecommunications, internet access, internal connections, etc.  It is essential that the School District is in compliance with the Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA).  This act was signed into law December 21, 2000 and authorizes schools and libraries to enforce a policy on Internet safety that includes measures to block or filter Internet access for both minors and adults to certain visual depictions that are obscene, child pornography, or with respect to use of computers with Internet access by  minors---- harmful to minors. 

Lowndes County Public Schools' Internet safety policy addresses the following issues:

  • Access by minors to inappropriate m atter on the Internet and World Wide Web
  • The safety and security of minors when using electronic mail, chat rooms, and other forms of direct electronic communications
  • Unauthorized access, including "hacking" and other unlawful activities by minors online
  • Unatuthorized disclosure, use, and dissemination of personal information regarding minors
  • Measures designed to restrict minors' access to materials harmful to minors
