Millville Elementary School Community Council Minutes
March 13, 2024
MINUTES
Those in attendance: Brady Johnson, (late), Tom Davis, Gary Walker, Darcy Ripplinger
- No Questions or Concerns.
- The Council reviewed last year's plan as well as the data from the Acadience testing from last year, fall to spring. The goal was to see a 4% increase from benchmark from fall to spring. Unfortunately, we did not meet our goal. The average increase in grades kindergarten through sixth grade was 0%. There was not an increase nor a decrease. The council discussed the individual grade levels and why certain grade levels have a larger discrepancy than others.
- The Council reviewed the proposed plan for next year. We discussed the limitations due to loss of funding over the last few years. Those in attendance agreed that the money needs to be used to fund our reading program and the paraprofessionals that work with our students on a daily basis.
- The proposed plan will be sent to all members of the council for final approval.
- Council member Darcy Ripplinger revisited the eye screening question. She reported that she has seen some great success with eye therapy and wondered about instituting a screener for this type of issue with a targeted number of students, just to see if it would work. It would require a specialized screening. Brady said he would continue to talk to the district nurses regarding this type of screening.
- The Council discussed the loss of the Reading Counts program. Scholastic has decided to discontinue this program and as a school, we will need to find a replacement. We discussed the possibility of coming up with our own program as well as paying for Accelerated Reader, another reading program that is still available. Brady will speak with the media specialist and visit another school in the district that used Accelerated Reader to see how difficult a transition would be. Accelerated Reader does come at a higher cost, but it may be worth it. These funds would be addressed in future trustlands’ plans.
- Meeting Adjourned.
- No Questions or Concerns.
