ART GRADES ON PARENT PORTAL

As I am responsible for the grades for individual art projects for the entire school population, please allow at least one week after the “due date” to give me reasonable time to enter the grades into the system.

When assignments are added into the system for grade level classes, I am required to enter dates that assignments are assigned and due. The dates entered often do not take into account that some students may need more time or have missed class due to absences, some students are mainstreamed with other classes and some classes may not progress at the same rate.

Points are earned throughout each nine weeks for a variety of assignments to include large/ small group discussions, quizzes, self-assessments, writing about artwork and art production projects. These assignments reflect the Visual Art Standards and Benchmarks.

If your student is absent from art, they should be able to catch up during the next class unless they are behind from the start. I give morning art passes to students when I feel they are getting behind. Students are given the opportunity on occasion to come to do additional work on their art creations.

ART GRADES are based on 20% Daily Effort & Participation and 80% Art Concepts & Skills.  Students will receive up to 10pts for both E/P and art concepts & skills.

Progress (mid-term) grades for art will show at least Effort/ Participation for that time period.

Art Assessment includes more than just a grade on a report card every nine weeks. A letter grade gives little information about what has actually been taught and learned. One way we give information about what has been taught by sending information to teachers to forward to parents via email.

Hard copies of informational newsletters will also be sent home with the “art portfolio” at the end of the semester and/ or school year. This collection of artwork and accompanying newsletter gives families and friends an idea of what students have been learning. Please take this opportunity to look through your child’s artwork and ask questions about what your child has been learning when portfolios are brought home. Informational art newsletters are sent home between two- four times during the school year. Art Portfolios with student artwork will be sent home once or twice during the school year.

Please email me with any questions, concerns or requests at mcdowells@leonschools.net when asking about your child please include their grade and teacher’s name to access the necessary and proper information.
