Lemont-Bromberek Combined School District 113 is celebrating Old Quarry Middle School’s recent designation as an Illinois Horizon School to Watch (IHSTW) by the Association of Illinois Middle-Grade Schools (AIMS). This achievement is due to the hard work and dedication of teachers and staff who work hard to empower students through continuous improvement each and every day.
AIMS says that schools recognized through IHSTW demonstrate academic excellence, developmental responsiveness, social equity, and organizational structures and processes designed to support a path towards excellence. The program is administered through a partnership with the National Forum to Accelerate Middle Grades Reform and recognizes schools that are focused on continuous school improvement.
The redesignation is determined by a site visit from representatives as well as ongoing self evaluations done by the school. In the letter announcing the redesignation, the IHSTW Co-Directors shared that the site team was very impressed with how Old Quarry Middle School has fulfilled the criteria of the program and the dedication to school improvement and student development.
“Our motto at Old Quarry is ‘We Can. We Will. We Are!’ and this recognition really shows that mission in action,” said Principal Joe Sweeney. “Our team is excited and proud to be able to show up every day and do what is best for our students while creating a supportive and encouraging learning environment for our entire school community. It truly is a GREAT DAY TO BE A WARRIOR!”
The school will be honored at the annual National Schools to Watch Conference in Washington D.C. this June. Old Quarry will now be part of a network of more than 500 schools across the country who have attained this status and will be able to participate in development activities and exchange resources to continue to be a place where middle grade students can truly shine.
