There’s nothing better than a good science experiment…except when you add it to your favorite book! We will read about Monarch migration and how to track their migration, we will also raise our own butterfly or monarch and set them free. Boom Chicka Boom, can you build a tree that holds the whole alphabet? Come explore the world of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) by building and creating straight out of your very favorite picture book! Will the big bad wolf be able to blow your house down? Or will you find the perfect design to hold up to a Magic Treehouse Terrible Twister?! Perhaps recreating Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone’s Chess game combining analytical reading while also learning to play the fun game of Chess–then engineer your own chess sets/pieces. Come dive in and fall in love with the world of science as told by your favorite book characters. Course will run Monday – Friday. NO Classes will be held on July 4th and 5th.

Wonderful World of Hogwarts

Students spend their time creating and compiling the materials necessary to begin their first year at Hogwarts! Items include making wands, spell book, potions, broomsticks, house ties, house scarves, trading cards, playing trivia, and more. The class incorporates reading excerpts, a day of Quidditch, and concludes with a Hogwarts induction ceremony. Course will run Monday – Friday. NO Classes will be held on July 4th and 5th.

Media Academy

Students entering grades 8-12 who are interested in writing and publishing are “hired” for this six-week course that meets 9am-12 noon, Monday-Thursday, June 17-July 25. This class culminates in creation of a print publication distributed throughout the La Crosse area.

Students build interviewing and reporting abilities and develop skills such as writing, editing, management, photography, and design, all while creating a body of work useful for a variety of future endeavors. Participants conduct editorial planning, interview sources, and produce their own stories with bylines. Reporting assignments help expand students’ knowledge and writing skills while they learn the publishing process.

Lessons are tied to practical applications extending beyond media literacy and journalism, intended to grow diverse and critical thinkers.

Harry Potter’s World of Hogwarts

Close study of varied wands of varied characters, use of how to create student’s personalized wands or replicas. Studying and reading some excerpts while having fun to re-create or innovate. Students spend their time creating and compiling the materials necessary to begin their first year at Hogwarts! Items include making wands, spell book, potions, broomsticks, house ties, house scarves, trading cards, playing trivia, and more. The class incorporates reading excerpts, a day of Quidditch, and concludes with a Hogwarts induction ceremony. Game playing, Lego Building, all included along with wood carving. . . . prototype building and final product building. Course will run Monday – Friday. NO Classes will be held on July 4th and 5th.

COURSE CANCELED – Restorative Justice – Circle Keepers

Students who participate in the Restorative Justice Circle Keepers summer school program will develop and enhance leadership skills while learning how to facilitate the circle process. The course will include an introduction to Restorative Justice practices, learning circle process, non-violent and effective communication, conflict transformation, valuing diversity, and challenging oppression and prejudice. This course is open to all students; however, those that attend Logan Middle or SOTA II next year will have the opportunity to become a Circle Keeper during the school year!
