Admin Alley

Paraprofessional Appreciation Day comes on April 3 every year. Paraprofessionals are titles given to people from different fields, such as healthcare, education, law, engineering, or human resources. They are supposed to be assistants to the main professionals. Nowadays, though, paraprofessionals are gaining more respect and importance as they are becoming professionals in their own right.

In the 1960s, paraprofessionals were first hired to work in schools around the U.S. with the help of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s Great Society anti-poverty program. Unfortunately, early paraprofessionals were mostly female and were all poor, which created a stigma and made them highly discriminated against as they had no choice but to do the jobs that no one else wanted to do.

Thank you to all of the paraprofessionals at Lackland ISD!

You are all amazing.

Around the District

April 8 total solar eclipse will be the first over San Antonio since 1397!

The last time the path of a total solar eclipse passed through the area we know as “San Antonio” was back in May of 1397 — 627 years ago.

A few facts for you:

The last total solar eclipse visible in San Antonio was 627 years ago in 1397! (see video below for some other cool facts—ties to Grade 4 social studies, too!)

In Houston, it was last visible in 1286!

In Texas, it was last visible in 1878!

In North America, it was last visible in 2017.
