Admin Alley Dr. Roper shares his appreciation for the support received from each member of the Lackland ISD learning organization (students, parents, and staff). He also provides holiday safety considerations and COVID-19 updates in this brief message.
LISD Toy Drive to Ft. Sam Houston
Thanks to everyone who took the time to drop off a toy (or more) to help brighten the day of a military child who has to spend Christmas in the hospital. Many of you opened your hearts and we were able to take approximately 120 gifts over to SAMMC for these wonderful children. If you are blessed to have children with good health, please take a moment this holiday season to pray for those parents and grandparents who may not be as fortunate. Please know that the gift you provided will brighten some child’s day. Thank you so much for responding! You all are the greatest!
A short message from the pediatric infectious disease doctor, Tess Barton, who has been fighting viruses for seventeen years. She’s advising area schools about COVID-19 protocol and safety measures. We feel this message is important with the upcoming Holiday and the continued need to practice COVID-19 safety. Around the District Above & Beyond Award
Each Above & Beyond award recipient will be recognized and honored at the next monthly school board meeting on December 15, 2020. They will receive a “Certificate of Achievement”, a $200.00 stipend, and a reserved parking space. Additionally, their names will be displayed on the Marquee and the Lackland ISD web site along with an article published in the weekly e-newsletter.
The Above & Beyond recommended winners for Fall 2020 recognition are: Auxiliary – Mary Pastrano serves as one of our Transportation Department Special Education Bus Assistants. Mrs. Pastrano does an outstanding job ensuring our students with special needs are safely transported to and from school every school day. Her warm-hearted and attentive demeanor allows her to calm her students when they are stressed from a change in their environment or noise from the bus. She is amazing with the students and always seems to know what to do to help calm her students. She is currently responsible for helping transport 11 students with varying special needs. She ensures all her bus riders are correctly buckled in and are comfortable during the bus route. We are proud to recognize Mary Pastrano as one of our Fall 2020 Above & Beyond award winners. Para-Professional – Melissa Mckee serves as a Special Education Para-Professional at Lackland Elementary. Mrs. McKee is a true team player; her positive attitude and knowledge are one of the reasons our school is successful. She works hard to make sure our students are succeeding and that they are learning to be independent. She comes to work with a smile and warm greeting for everyone each day. Even on days when most people would struggle, she smiles and tells you the positive aspect of whatever is happening. She is very knowledgeable about the students she works with and helps other staff members problem solve to ensure student success. We are proud to recognize Melissa Mckee as one of Fall 2020 Above & Beyond award winners. Professional – Jennifer Dominguez serves as a School Counselor at Lackland Elementary School. Mrs. Dominguez not only does a terrific job providing counseling support for 3rd through 6th grade students she also serves as elementary testing coordinator, elementary S2S sponsor and UIL Coach. According to one of her colleagues “Mrs. Dominguez does a phenomenal job of creating school spirit and School "sunshine." I was impressed by how she ran Red Ribbon Week and the other "dress up spirit" week we had. I think every school needs someone like Jennifer to make things fun and supportive for not only the students but also the teachers.” We are proud to recognize Jennifer Dominguez as one of our Fall 2020 Above & Beyond award winners. Professional – Tanya Prescher serves as a Theater and Communications Teacher at Stacey Junior Senior High School. During the transition to virtual learning Mrs. Prescher was instrumental in helping her department resolve technology problems. According to one of her colleagues “when we were all stressing about the technology issues and had questions, she was the voice of reason and was always willing to help any of us troubleshoot problems. She took over as a mentor for our new AVID teacher at the last minute because of her knowledge and leadership skills without having much time to get trained to do so. She has been a positive figure when we needed it.” We are proud to recognize Tanya Prescher as one of our Fall 2020 Above & Beyond award winners.

Food Drive
For the past two weeks, the Lackland ISD Student Councils organized a food drive collection to be given to the San Antonio Food Bank to assist them with the overwhelming demand that they are facing this holiday season due to the Coronavirus pandemic. The Elementary, Middle, and High School campuses collected over 8 32-gallon buckets full of food and led to a grand total weight of over 400 pounds! We appreciate the Lackland ISD community for stepping up and saying "Yes, we can!" to help keep the Food Bank stocked for the holidays and making sure everyone in the City of San Antonio and the surrounding areas has food to eat for the holidays.
Ms. Duron's Community Service Class had a fun time volunteering at Willie Cortez this past Wednesday! At the center, we were able to organize a “Grinch” themed “Escape room” activity for the seniors to participate in. Timed for 45 minutes, the seniors completed the challenge by finding clues and opening locks to save “Whoville” from ultimate doom! We definitely had an amazing experience spending time with them, and we can’t wait to see them again!
Ms. Duron's Community Service Class visited Ms. Rodriguez’s first grade class. Virtual and in-person learners were able to share their favorite holiday jokes and riddles. They colored in husky masks which were worn when they pretended to be Jingle the dog, the main character of the story. The high school students read “Jingle All the Way” by Tom Shay-Zapien. The story is about a little husky dog and his holiday adventures.

Maria Orencia placed 9th chair on flute. Anias Culberson earned 8th chair on clarinet. Allison Flores earned first chair on tenor saxophone and will advance to the Area contest. Lauren Sawvel was named first alternate on trumpet. Simone Sheehan earned 1st chair on French horn and will also advance to Area. Way to go, band and good luck at Area!
Time during the holidays is meant to be shared with loved ones, and Mrs. Duron's community service class made a goal to spread some holiday cheer to families at Seton Home in San Antonio, TX. Providence is a shelter for young moms and their children. The agency's vision is to stop the cycle of generational trauma and give every child and family a bright future, no matter their circumstances. The class handcrafted 16 wreaths to display in their rooms and bring a little more holiday cheer. To complete the project, students also made cards and added a few small gifts for the babies.

Maestra Cervantes by: Michael Hornsby, senior
‘Maestra’ ( teacher ) Veronica Cervantes is one of the many great teachers at Stacey. She has taught here since 2018 teaching for a total of 16 years. At Stacey she teaches Spanish 1 through 5, with Spanish 4 and 5 being AP. She received her bachelor’s degree in Spanish at The University of Incarnate Word and went on to get her master’s in education. Incarnate Word High School was the first school she taught at. There, she was one of many foreign language teachers and taught there from 2005 to 2010. Beginning at the Young Women’s Leadership Academy in 2010, she was the only teacher that taught Spanish, as it was the only foreign language offered. Teaching Spanish 1-5 AP, she left that school in 2016. Moving to Northside ISD at Holmes High School in 2016, she stayed there until 2018. She decided on teaching Spanish over English because she loves the traveling and geography aspect and this is a huge part of learning a foreign language. She also loves teaching Spanish because it can potentially inspire someone to travel the world. After teaching Spanish she aspires to become a school counselor. Maestra Cervantes loves to exercise, ride her bike, spend time with family and her dogs in her free time. Her favorite part of Stacey is the students. She says she enjoys interacting with students on a daily basis. For her every day is different, and her students make the days fun for her with the things they say and how they see the world. Last week was National Computer Science Education Week and students from around the world were celebrating by participating in the “Hour of Code” project. Started in 2014, this movement was created to challenge everyone, especially students, to try coding for one hour that week. The overall goal is to encourage more students to choose computer programming as their career. Each year, the movement has grown around the world, with tens of millions of students participating in 180+ countries. Our students have been participating for the last several years, and I am always amazed at how much they love it, and how great they are at it. Find out more about the Hour of Code and coding in general at Code.org, and try it for yourself! You might be surprised at how fun Computer Science can be!
Lego club- Christmas challenges
4th grade students, remote learners, and teachers have had to get super flexible and creative about our SFA reading program.
We are blessed with one to one technology for our students. Students who are face to face learning enjoy having “meetings” with remote learners and remote learners are incorporated into our classroom via Teams.
Engaging classrooms increase student learning and success! They get to read together, discuss reading strategies, as well as practice 21st century learning skills.
