Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.

The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402.

The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30 day period.

This week's spotlight Julián and Joaquin Castro.

Alternate text

Jason Reed / Reuters file

Julián Castro is a Democratic politician who served as the mayor of San Antonio, Texas from 2009-2014, and as President Barack Obama's Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary from 2014-2017. In January 2019, Castro announced his presidential bid in the 2020 election, before exiting the race early the following year. Hailing from a politically active Mexican family, Castro has an identical twin brother, Joaquin, who serves in the U.S. House of Representatives for the state of Texas.

Castro was born on September 16, 1974, in San Antonio, Texas, one minute before his twin brother, Joaquin. Castro's mother, Rosie, was a Chicana activist of the 1960s and 1970s who raised her two sons and took them to political meetings. Rosie never married Julián and Joaquin's father, Jesse Guzman, who had a family of his own.

Castro attended Stanford University in 1996, majoring in political science and communications, and then matriculated to Harvard University, where he received his law degree three years later. After graduating, the twins worked at the same law firm together before establishing their own in 2005.

Julián's identical twin brother is Congressman Joaquin Castro, who's been representing the 20th congressional district of Texas since 2013. Like his brother, Joaquin went to Stanford University undergrad and earned his law degree at Harvard University. Joaquin served as his brother's presidential campaign chair.

"When my grandmother got here almost a hundred years ago, I'm sure she never could have imagined that just two generations later, one of her grandsons would be serving as a member of the United States Congress and the other would be standing with you here today to say these words: I am a candidate for President of the United States of America," he remarked in English and Spanish, adding, "There are no frontrunners that are born here, but I've always believed that with big dreams and hard work, anything is possible in this country."  Julian Castro

s2s Virtual Lunch

Written by: Alyssa Berg Junior s2s Member

Alternate text

On Friday, September 11 we, the S2S club, held our first (virtual) S2S New Student Lunch Bunch! We had many of the amazing new students join us! We introduced ourselves, played fun games (Two Truths and a Lie), and we even did something new where we had teacher features! Our teacher features for this lunch bunch were Mr. Mike Flores (volleyball & boys basketball coach), Mrs. Veronica Cervantes (Spanish teacher), and Mr. Aaron Castillo (military family life counselor). Overall we all had a great time getting to know each other and we are super excited for the next New Student Lunch Bunch!

Students in Mrs. Baltazar's class were asked to write about a piece of advice and then sum it up in one sentence for a meme.

Why Do Ducks Duck Their Heads Underwater?

Alternate text

When you are feeling hungry, you probably head for the kitchen and get a snack. When certain kinds of ducks decide it’s time for a snack, they often go bottoms up like the two ducks you see in this picture. If you could look underwater, you would see the ducks stretching their necks out, looking for food. With their duck bills,
they find seeds and other duck delicacies on the muddy bottom.
The next time you spot a duck, wait around to see if it suddenly goes “bill down, tail up”. If it does, you know you are watching a dabbler that is seeking a snack!!! Yes. It is OK if you “quack up” in laughter.
