Lackland ISD Holds Town Hall

Lackland ISD Superintendent, Dr. Burnie Roper, facilitated the first town hall for the 2023-24 school year on October 11, 2023.  Dr. Roper shared the district’s recently adopted vision, mission, and beliefs and how they drive practices outlined in the Strategic Plan for 2022-2027.  The meeting included introductions of Lackland ISD personnel and the JBSA-Lackland School Liaison Officer, Mrs. Dianna Fryer.  Meeting content included announcements regarding the current Board of Trustee position vacancy.  More information regarding application procedures is listed at https://www.lacklandisd.net/board/new-board-members.  Federal and Special Programs Director, Dayna Guyton, provided an update regarding activities associated with the 2022-2027 DoDEA Grant.  These activities include the summer stem camps serving over 60 elementary students and approximately 25 secondary students.  Dr. Roper and team members responded to questions presented by parent participants.  These questions prompt the district’s need to explore robotics for 6th graders, determine methods for communicating the utilization of funds to support instruction and student activities, providing welcoming access for parents while ensuring student safety, and partnering with parents to ensure appropriate supports are provided to students specifically those with special needs.  Lackland ISD will hold the next Town Hall meeting on January 17, 2024, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in the Lackland ISD Auditorium.

Learning about the Eclipse

What a cool experience! Presenters all of the way from Maryland taught our 5th graders about the eclipse. They loved it and had great questions for the experts! 😎

Mrs. Flores also captured a photo of one of our 5th graders conducting their student-led fall conference. Amazing! I love how it let's them take ownership of their successes!

Kinder Corner with Mrs. Sewell

What a week it has been! Students really got into their learning as they used their bodies to make letter formations on the floor, did experiments, and wrapped up their study of the book Jalapeño Bagels by sampling some of the spicy treats and washing it down with fresh apple cider. A trip to the Book Fair ensured exciting stories for all!

“One Pill Kills” is set up across the state to educate Texans on how to prevent, recognize, and reverse fentanyl poisonings. Students and families need to know that other drugs may contain a deadly level of fentanyl. You cannot see, taste, or smell it. It is almost impossible to tell if another drug is laced with fentanyl unless tested with a fentanyl testing strip. Parents, please see the fliers attached that gives information about fentanyl and it’s affects.

Lackland ISD Gifted and Talented Services

In alignment with the Texas State Plan for Services for Gifted and Talented Students, the mission of the gifted services in LISD is to provide learning opportunities that challenge and develop students identified for gifted services through creative, self-directed learning. This can be seen through the development of innovative projects and performances that reflect students’ individuality, as well as through honed research skills and advanced critical thinking.

Gifted and Talented services are educational interventions for students who perform at or show the potential for performing at a remarkably high level of accomplishment when compared to others of the same age, experience, or environment.

Elementary: Identified students in grades K-5 are cluster grouped with GT-trained teachers in the core subject areas of English language arts, social studies, science, and mathematics.  Services for identified Kindergarten students begin March 1 as mandated by the state.

Secondary: Identified students in grades 6-12 are provided service through Honors and AP classes with GT-trained teachers in the core subject areas of English language arts, social studies, science, and mathematics.

Lesson differentiation, and participation in the projects aligned to the Texas Performance Standards Project (TPSP) are some of the varied curricular options utilized in core GT classes.

Visual Supports in the Home
Communication is the key and children who are still
developing language and communication will need
different supports in building those receptive and
expressive language skills. Children with disabilities
highly benefit from visual supports to help them
understand the world around them. Not just in the
classroom but at home, too! In this session, we will go
