On September 11, 2001, 19 militants associated with the Islamic extremist group al Qaeda hijacked four airplanes and carried out suicide attacks against targets in the United States. Two of the planes were flown into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, a third plane hit the Pentagon just outside Washington, D.C., and the fourth plane crashed in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Almost 3,000 people were killed during the 9/11 terrorist attacks, which triggered major U.S. initiatives to combat terrorism and defined the presidency of George W. Bush.
The attacks resulted in 2,977 fatalities, over 25,000 injuries, and substantial long-term health consequences, in addition to at least $10 billion in infrastructure and property damage.[8][9] It remains the deadliest terrorist attack in human history and the single deadliest incident for firefighters and law enforcement officers in the history of the United States, with 340[10] and 72 killed,[11][12] respectively. Numerous memorials have been constructed, including the National September 11 Memorial & Museum in New York City, the Pentagon Memorial in Arlington County, Virginia, and the Flight 93 National Memorial at the Pennsylvania crash site.
We honor the victims and heroes of that day.

Meet Mr. Navedo, the new HS Social Studies teacher! by: Jordan Fedder, Senior
Coming to us from South San Antonio, Mr. Juan Navedo is the new Government, Economics, and AP US History teacher located in Stacey room 4817. Entering his 11th year of teaching, he’s very excited to teach us here at Lackland in person after over a year with only virtual to very little face-to-face interaction with previous students.
Q: What’s your favorite part about teaching? A: My favorite aspect of teaching is the meaningful interaction with students and engaging in thought-provoking conversations.
Q: Why social studies? A: I love History/Social Studies because I had a really great teacher when I started college that had a passion for the subject that ignited a desire to learn more about things I thought I knew or had no idea about.
Q: What can we expect from you as a teacher? A: As a teacher, you can expect honesty, flexibility, welcoming, and an ear if needed.
Q: Where are you from? A: I consider myself from San Antonio since I’ve been here for more than 20 years, but I was born in Puerto Rico.
Q: What’s your family like? A: Most of my extended family still lives in Puerto Rico, so I really only get to see my immediate family.
Q: What’s your favorite food? A: I can’t pick a favorite food because I love food so much, but I really love cooking and making delicious food.
Q: How do you like to spend your free time? A: I spend my free time with a combination of playing/spending time with my wife and 2 girls (6 and 3), playing video games, watching anime, and playing music (mainly guitar and piano).
Q: Any games you’d recommend playing? A: There are a few games this year that I am very much anticipating; the game I am probably the most excited about is Dying Light 2.
Q: Anything else you’d like to share or add about yourself? (: A: I am a nerd who is just being myself.
10th graders in Mrs. Baltazar's class are spending two days reading poetry on 9/11 in order to examine how poetry helped our nation process the traumatic events of that day. I asked them to write down on our white board what they know about that day. Elementary Happenings Mrs. Crawford’s classes conducted a Skittles Lab experiment to test whether Skittles dissolved quicker in warm or cool water. They used every step of the Scientific Process to conduct the experiment and analyze results.
