Lackland ISD Recommends Renewal of District of Innovation Plan

During the September 27,2021, District Education Improvement Council meeting, members of the district innovation plan committee participated in a work session to renew the district of innovation plan.  Committee consensus was reached regarding the renewal of each exemption and corresponding innovation strategies and local implementation guidelines.  Lackland ISD’s draft innovation plan is posted on the district website and may be viewed at

https://www.lacklandisd.net/about/district-of-innovation/2022-2027-doi-renewal

District and community stakeholders are encouraged to review the contents of the plan and provide feedback using the public comment feature that is also available on the district’s website.

Lackland ISD will ensure that the plan is posted for a minimum of 30 days.  On November 8,2021, the district innovation plan committee will hold a public hearing to receive final input and make final plan revisions.  The public hearing will be held at 3:45 p.m. in the LISD Cynthia Lyon Center.

The District of Innovation concept, passed by the 84th Legislative Session in House Bill 1842, gives traditional independent school districts most of the flexibilities available to Texas’ open-enrollment charter schools.
Many districts in the state have gone through this process to become a DOI.  A DOI designation can give school districts local control and decide which flexibilities best suit their needs. Final approval of the district’s innovation plan rests with the Lackland ISD Board of Trustees and must be by a two-thirds majority vote.

Questions concerning the DOI designation should be directed to Dr. Burnie Roper (roper.b@lacklandisd.net), Superintendent of Schools or Dr. Tonya Hyde (hyde.t@lacklandisd.net ), Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction.

Pink Out Pep Rally!!!

By: Sophia Mendez, freshman

We celebrated the first pep rally of the year on Tuesday afternoon in the Stacey gym, with the sponsors of the High School Student Council and outstanding help from the emcees- Maria Orencia, Mia Flores, Olivia Charles, and Saniya Willis. The games provided at the pep rally were scavenger hunt and a hula hoop game! Teachers in the audience watching the scavenger hunt game were surprised most kids had an umbrella, one of the scavenger hunt items. Both games were filled with fun and adrenaline.

Stacey teachers were joined by students to show their best moves to the  ‘Fancy Like’ dance. High school band played the Hey Song, Shorties 5, 1, and 3, Land of a Thousand Dances, the Stacey Alma Mater, and Shout It Out. Mostly everyone I talked to said Shout It Out was their favorite song the High School Band played at pep rally.

Last week the Stacey Jr/Sr High Cross Country team competed in their District Cross Country meet in Brackettville. Maggie Bartlow led the girls team with a 1st place finish. Lauren Sawvel and Mia Flores finished in 7th and 8th respectively. On the boys side, Christian Cunningham led with a 4th place finish while Jordan Turnage finished 6th. All five runners have advanced to the Region IV Cross Country Meet at Texas A&M Corpus Christi on Oct. 25. Good luck to them all!

In the Junior High race Aleq Countryman led the boys with a 3rd placed finish with Jack Sorensen coming right behind him in 4th. Both runners had great race and capped off a great season by our entire Junior High team. Congratulations.

Senior Selfies!

Match the paragraph with the selfie.  Seniors were asked to reveal a sliver of their private self to the listening world with a soliloquy like Hamlet’s.  The picture and soliloquy is to support the claim that “…the selfie is for anyone who’s constantly documenting the act of becoming…It’s not self-obsession…it’s a way to connect.”

“Now I am alone.” Hamlet once said. But one is never alone in this cruel, forsaken world because thou hast themself. It’s honestly what I’d say but enough about that though. I’m not really your average kid going around school living life as calmly as possible. Sorry to say your

assumption is dead wrong. I’ve lived on the coasts of America, traveled to the Land of the Rising Sun and took up a most interesting hobby that I feel could turn into a profession. Living in a house (counting myself) of five is a literal free-for-all every day. Or more of a cooperative team where the enemy is allied against me because if they stood and faced me alone, they would utterly get demolished. On the outside, to what most people took me for in the past, see me as the loveable bubbly living teddy bear or something of that nature. What they don’t take to account is that there are two sides to every coin.

I have had many worries in my life and I care too much about the little things. Why do I do this to myself? It is because I like the idea of perfection and going by expectations, but I know that is not what really happens in the real world. Is it really worth all the worrying in life? I’ve heard that life is too short, so it is best to focus on all of the great things, but it seems difficult to do that when you're living in a world full of stress. Oddly, it’s the simple things like smiling, being around my people, and looking up at the sky that takes my mind off of my worries. In the sky, I like to imagine the different shapes I see in the clouds and at night time I see the shining stars. It’s like a game to keep my mind off the overwhelming thoughts. It’s the game that helps me enjoy even the little things in life that people take for granted. With all the great little things in the world, I ask myself, why keep on worrying if it isn’t going to matter later on?

In this photo it shows one of my hobbies and what I like to do in my spare time. The photo also shows my hard work and determination because I am sweating a lot. You can tell a lot about me from just this one still frame. My personality is also shown because usually people that share my hobby are more lighthearted people and like to have fun. This also shows that I do not care about materialistic things because during the process of my hobby my shoes get ripped up because of the coarse materials on the board. It is also a very important part of my social life because it allows me to connect with other people who share the same interests as me and allows me to meet a variety of people.

I took this picture at the gym to show that I like to work out and stay active. It shows that I have dedication and work for my goals. People who go to the gym more often than not, have goals of bettering themselves much like I do. This picture represents that I take time out of my day to improve myself and I spend time and workout with my friends as well, so it has a social aspect to it as well. I try my best to stay active and stay physically strong as well as mentally strong. It’s something I enjoy doing because you can do it at any time, whether it’s cold or hot outside, or you don’t have a gym close to home, you can always put in time to better yourself. Luckily for me there’s a gym that’s just a short walk from my house.

My life is quite crazy in my own eyes literally all around the U.S.. I love sports and and to just work out in general, It gets me going and gets my mind off of life in general, working hard has also been my go to so I love to do both all the time. I also love to go out to places, keep exploring after me going around the U.S. I weirdly want to go find and explore more. I also love to game, but that’s just a fun fact, any game as long as it is interesting and intriguing.

Meet Ms.Parham!

Lauren Sawvel, Senior

Stacey has added many wonderful people to the staff this year, one of them including Ms. Alejandra Parham! She knows all the ins and outs here at Stacey as she is a former military child and Stacey alumni who graduated from this very school in 2012. After graduation, Ms. Parham joined the United States Army and served for 4 years. (Thank you for your service!) Once she got out of the military, she started working here at Stacey as an Aide. In 2020, she graduated college at Texas A&M University-San Antonio and is now working as a Special Education Teacher in our school.

How many years have you taught at Stacey and what has the experience been like? What is a goal for yourself as an educator?

This is my first-year teaching at Stacey. The experience has been great. I have great colleagues that have continuously helped me begin the year with a bang! My goal is to see growth in myself and my students.

Is Stacey the same as it was from when you went to school here? How is it different? What inspired you to come back to this school?

When I came to Stacey almost a decade ago, things are still practically the same. I still see some of the teachers that I had in High School. Shout out to Mrs. Cashion, Mrs. Wann, Mr. P., Mrs. Duron, and Ms. Rabidas. I came back to this school because I loved the culture and school environment. Stacey is a great place to come to school and I want to be a part of the mission in helping our students succeed.

Are you excited about being one of the S2S sponsors this year? What is S2S and what projects are planned for the year?

I am excited about being one of the S2S sponsors for this year. I was in S2S when I was in high school. S2S is a student program where we get together to make the new students at Stacey feel welcomed and acquainted with the school. Right now, we are still working on projects, but we have many great ideas going.

How has the military impacted your life?

The military has impacted my life in a positive way.  I was a military child growing up and moved around a lot. I never really appreciated it until I was in high school. I got to travel all around the world and make friends in many places. When I joined the military myself, I got to follow in my dad’s footsteps, which was a great feeling.

What piece advice would you give to your students?

Some advice that I would give to my students is enjoy school. Once you graduate you may wish to come back. (I know I do). Also, stay organized and be aware of time management.

How long have you lived in Texas?

I have lived in Texas for about 15 years. I lived in Wichita Falls, Texas, until 2010. Then, I moved to San Antonio, which is where I have been since, minus the time I spent at Fort Hood, Texas, serving in the military.

A fun question- What is your to-go-to dessert?

My go to dessert would be either warm brownies with ice cream or cheesecake. It really depends where I am at and what I am craving at the time.

Ms. Parham is a strong, dedicated, and compassionate person who exemplifies the morals and values we teach here at Stacey. Thank you Ms. Parham for partaking in this interview, I had a wonderful time getting to know you!

Tourist Day at Stacey (L to R) Mrs. Gateley, Mrs. MK and Mrs. Jett

Are YOU Talking to ME?

Would you believe that most people spend 70 to 80% of each day communicating?

How about that 70% of communication is done WITHOUT using WORDS?  How is that possible?

Most people rely heavily on nonverbal communication:  gestures, facial expressions, and posture, for example, than on spoken words.

OK...so what about those words?  The average person speaks right around 16,000 words every day.

Women average about 16, 215 words every day and men average about 15,669 words every day.

Most languages have more than 50,000 words.  In TOTAL, there are around 6,000 to 7,000 world languages.

More than half of the world's population can speak two or more languages!!!   There are MORE than

130 DIFFERENT languages spoken in Russia alone!!!!

Who says the desert is a wasteland?

The LARGEST photovoltaic power plant is located on 140 acres (56 hectares) in the desert in southern Nevada, at Nellis Air Force Base.

The power plant uses 72, 000 (yes 72 THOUSAND!!!) solar panels to produce

68,490 kilowatt-hours of electricity EVERY DAY!!!   The solar panels use a solar tracking system that follows the sun across the sky to get the  maximum amount of solar radiation.

Today, the 12,000 workers and residents on Nellis Air Force Base acquire 25% of the electrical power from the power plant.  The power plant saves the Air Force about $1,000,000 (Yes...ONE MILLION DOLLARS) every year and reduces carbon dioxide emissions for the rest of us!!

Aim high!!!  Go for solar energy!!!
