Veterans Day -- originally called Armistice Day -- began as an occasion to reflect upon the heroism of those who died in our country's service. It falls on November 11, the anniversary of the signing of the armistice that ended World War I.
In 1954, the name of the holiday was changed from "Armistice Day" to "Veterans Day" in order to recognize veterans of all wars. Related: Learn about the history of Veterans Day
We celebrate and honor America's veterans for their patriotism, love of country and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good. Veterans Day is a time for us to pay our respects to those who have served. For one day, we stand united in respect for you, our veterans.
Veterans Day is celebrated across the U.S. with a variety of events to honor and recognize the service of military veterans. Each year on November 11, there is a prominent Veterans Day ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery, where the president traditionally lays a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. In addition to the wreath laying at Arlington National Cemetery, several other prominent national Veterans Day ceremonies take place across the United States, including:
National World War II Memorial: Located in Washington, D.C., this memorial hosts an annual ceremony featuring speeches by dignitaries and veterans, as well as a wreath-laying event to honor those who served during World War II.
Veterans Day National Ceremony: Also held at the U.S. Navy Memorial in Washington, D.C., this event includes the traditional reading of the names of veterans who have passed away in the last year, along with musical tributes and speeches.
California's Veterans Day Ceremony: Held at the California State Capitol in Sacramento, this ceremony features a program that includes musical performances, speeches from state officials, and a wreath-laying ceremony to honor California veterans.
The Vietnam Veterans Memorial: This memorial in Washington, D.C., hosts special ceremonies that often include the reading of names of fallen soldiers and other tributes to Vietnam veterans, emphasizing remembrance and reflection.
These ceremonies serve to honor and remember the sacrifices of veterans, providing opportunities for reflection.
Veterans Day is a time to honor and thank those who have served in the military for their sacrifices and dedication. It's an important day to show appreciation.
You might consider writing a heartfelt letter or spending time with a veteran, listening to their stories and sharing their experiences. Volunteering at a local veterans' organization or donating to nonprofits that support veterans' health and well-being can also make a meaningful impact. Even simple acts like attending a Veterans Day ceremony or flying the American flag show respect and solidarity.
Your efforts can help veterans feel valued and supported, not just on this day, but throughout the year. |

**Lackland ISD Holds Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for Newly Renovated Gymnasium**
After much anticipation, Lackland Independent School District (ISD) celebrated the completion of its gymnasium renovations with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, at 7:30 a.m. The event marked a significant milestone for students, student-athletes, coaches, and staff who had been eagerly awaiting the facility’s upgrades.
The ceremony was attended by several distinguished guests, including Board Member Mr. Sheehan, representatives from Allpro Construction, and Debra Dockery Architects. The event was facilitated by Dr. Tonya Hyde, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction. Mr. Concha, Director of Operations, shared valuable insights into the project’s scope and progress, while Mr. Sheehan expressed his gratitude to students, coaches, and the community for their patience during the renovations.
The newly renovated gymnasium comes as a welcome addition to the district, especially considering the challenges the athletic programs faced in the interim, holding games in competitor gymnasiums and JBSA facilities. Despite these obstacles, Lackland ISD's Varsity Volleyball team has had a strong season, paving the way for what looks to be a promising championship run. The ribbon cutting marks not only the completion of the project but also the continued commitment of Lackland ISD to providing quality facilities that support both academic and athletic excellence. |

Stacey Flashback:
Mitchell Driver & Hannah Eselgroth By: Audrey Upton, sophomore |
|
|
Mitchell Driver & Hannah Eselgroth(Driver) are both Stacey graduates from the class of 2016. They are married and living in Mississippi. When did you attend Stacey?
Mitchell: I attended Stacey in 5th and 6th grade (2008-2010), and moved back for my senior year (2015-2016). Hannah: I attended Stacey high school from 2014-2016, and Lackland elementary school from 2004-2011
What is your favorite memory from your time at Stacey?
Mitchell: My favorite memory was moving back to Stacey and reuniting with friends that I had been classmates with back in elementary school. My first day was a bit surreal reuniting with all of them but it made my transition to a new school so much easier compared to all of the other times I had just been the new kid that knew nobody.
Hannah: My favorite memory from Stacey would be my junior year. The whole year was a blast for me, and I got to make a bunch of lifelong friends.
How many schools did you attend?
Mitchell: From preschool to Senior year, I attended nine different schools. Hannah: I attended a total of 5 schools.
What did you do after graduating from high school, and what are you doing now?
Mitchell: After graduating high school, I went to college at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Florida. I got my Master’s degree in Aeronautical Science while also doing flight training and becoming a flight instructor. After college I joined the Navy and became a fighter pilot, which was my dream job since the 1st grade.
Hannah: After high school I had some health issues to tend to for a year, post-graduation. Once my health was stable, I attended Johnson and Wales University and received my bachelor’s in public health with a minor in Epidemiology. Shortly after finishing school, my husband Mitchell and I got married. As of right now I am not currently seeking a job but instead I am at home with our dog and settling into the lifestyle of being a jet pilots’ wife. I am hoping to begin getting my master’s at our next duty station.
How long have you been married?
Hannah: Mitchell and I have been married for about three years. We met in the fifth grade at Lackland elementary school, we then reconnected in our senior year of high school at Stacey in 2016.
Is there something you wish you had known before graduating?
Mitchell:In terms of skills I wish I had been taught, I would say more classes dealing with economics including taxes, credit cards, interest rates, etc. It's very important to understand how these things work in the world and if I had known what I know now, I could have saved myself a lot of money after high school.
Hannah: Before graduating, I wish I had known to just appreciate being a kid. I rushed myself into adulthood not realizing that I wasn’t embracing the present.
What advice would you give to current high school students?
Mitchell:My advice to high schoolers would be to set yourselves up for success by doing well in school, but don’t forget to have fun and enjoy the last few years you have before adulthood. Spend every chance you can with your friends and make plenty of memories, because in a few years you will all graduate and start your own journeys. Being an adult is a lot of fun if you put in the hard work up front and know what you really want out of life. Always have a goal and be a nice person, it will take you far.
Hannah: Some advice for current students: Respect your teachers, I know that sounds cheesy but from 2019-2021 I got to be a teacher at an elementary school. During that time, I learned how little they got paid, how much they had to deal with not only from the students, but also the parents and the heads of the school. It’s a lot to juggle, and they really do care about you. Don’t take their generosity for granted. Focus on school, pay attention. When I was younger, I didn’t care about school much and I later learned to regret that, I ended up having to work 10x harder.
Where do you live now?
Mitchell: I'm currently stationed in Mississippi for about a year of flight training, flying the T-45. We aren't sure where we will end up next, but we have our sights set on getting stationed in Japan in a few years.
Thank you Mitchell & Hannah! |

Interview with Mrs. Martinez
By Evalynn Hulburt 4th grade |
|
|
Hello, everyone! My name is Evalynn Hurlburt, and I’m going to tell you about a teacher we all like to call Mrs. Martinez. It all started when I was in 3rd grade, and I loved her! She was like the best teacher in the world. I was heartbroken when I had to move on from her class, but I was so happy to get to interview her now for the Journalism Club. When I asked Mrs. Martinez for an interview, she said yes, and I was so excited! On the day of the interview, we sat down, and I asked her some fun questions. My first question was, "What’s your favorite thing about being a teacher at this school?" She told me that she loves getting to know all the kids. Next, I asked her, "What was your favorite subject when you were in elementary school?" She said math! Even now, she says math is still her favorite subject.
My last question was, "What advice would you give a student who wants to be a teacher someday?" She said to “Try to learn something every day” because you never know where education will take you.
I was so inspired by her words, and I hope you enjoy reading about her advice as much as I enjoyed interviewing her! P.S. I think all the teachers are cool! Take flight and soar, Eagles! |
