SAN ANTONIO — By day she’s a teacher and by night, she’s a student. “I’m in a reading specialist program through UTSA,” Kellie Clark-Chan said as she explained how she spends most of her day, “I just keep on going. It’s like a motor.” Clark-Chan says she has one goal. “My goal is to work with students who struggle with reading either because they have some kind of reading disability in some way.” |

Updated Mask Guidance and Vaccination Clinic
A letter was sent home to parents via School Messenger on November 15, 2021 informing them of the recent change in the mask mandate. JBSA COVID-19 Guidance Memorandum #61 states that fully vaccinated individuals are no longer required to wear a mask indoors. Fully vaccinated means it has been at least two weeks since you received your last shot of the two doses of Pfizer or Moderna vaccine or two weeks after receiving the single dose of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine. The Pfizer vaccine supply for children 5-11 reached San Antonio November 5, 2021. If a student received their vaccine on that day, they would be eligible for their second dose on November 26, 2021. The student would be considered fully vaccinated two weeks later on December 10, 2021. Therefore, we are asking parents to ensure your eligible students remain masked while indoors at school if they have not been fully vaccinated.
On November 2, 2021, the CDC released a statement recommending that children 5-11 receive the pediatric COVID-19 vaccine. “COVID-19 cases in children can result in hospitalizations, deaths, MIS-C (inflammatory syndromes) and long-term complications, such as “long COVID”, in which symptoms can linger for months”. Therefore, we are encouraging parents to get their children vaccinated as soon as possible. To support this effort, Lackland ISD will be hosting a Vaccination Clinic on Thursday, January 13, 2022 from 12-6p and Friday, February 10, 2022 from 12-6p. Additional information will be provided by Lackland Elementary. We hope that you will take advantage of this opportunity.
We want to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving. Please stay safe and continue to protect yourselves and your family. We appreciate you being a part of the Lackland ISD Family. |

It’s easy to see why Lauren Sawvel was voted by her classmates as the student “Who’s Most Likely to Brighten your Day.”
“She's always got a smile on her face and she's always lighting up the room,” said Virginia Allred Stacey High School Principal, Hunter Shelby. |

High School Interns: Allison Flores and Terence Cunningham
by: Shannah Flores-Betancourt, senior |
|
|
When I first heard the news about high school interns, I couldn’t believe what I had heard. Students just months from graduating already taking the steps to pursue their goals outside of high school was a shock and huge wake up call. I took some time to interview these two role model students, Terence Cunningham and Allison Flores, to learn more about the internship program they were accepted into and figure out exactly how they were accepted.
What is the internship all about and what do you do? Allison: We shadow the college interns and the technology department and follow their daily routines and get to see what they do in real world scenarios for technology jobs. What’s your favorite aspect of your internship?
Allison: My favorite aspect of the internship is that we get to go with the other interns and see how they respond to trouble tickets and resolve the issues that teachers and other staff are having. What advice would you give to people who want to pursue this internship?
Allison: My advice is to be open minded, technology jobs aren't super high paced all the time like they are in the movies, there's no crazy hacking or furious typing all day long, it could be as simple of a problem as plugging in a printer. Terence: Take all the prerequisite courses and then take the cybersecurity capstone course. What’s your least favorite aspect of the internship?
Allison: My least favorite aspect is that just personally I wish we could be there more often, we go twice a week to shadow but I enjoy it enough that I wish it was more frequent. What are you most excited to learn about during your internship? Terence: I’m most excited to learn about what working in this career field is like. What’s your typical day like?
Terence: We wait for the bell to ring, grab a hall pass, and head to the district building to check in with Dr. Jones and meet Brianna, the tech intern that we follow. What we do on a daily basis varies; sometimes we follow her as she helps teachers, sometimes we stay in the district building and learn about a cybersecurity related topic. Who is your mentor at the internship?
Terence: Dr. Jones is the head of the tech department, and Brianna is one of the tech interns who we usually follow on the job. |

She Kills Monsters: Young Adventurers Edition by Qui Nguyen |
|
|
The Stacey Drama Club proudly presents She Kills Monsters: Young Adventurers Edition by Qui Nguyen on December 2nd, 3rd and 4th at 6 PM in the Lackland ISD auditorium. Tickets are $5 and will be available at the door. Admission is free for all Lackland ISD employees. This show is intended for a teenage and older audience and contains a brief sequence with flashing lights. Please contact Mr. Richard with any questions at Richard.m@lacklandisd.net.
“She Kills Monsters tells the story of high schooler Agnes Evans as she deals with the death of her younger sister, Tilly. When Agnes stumbles upon Tilly’s Dungeons & Dragons notebook, she finds herself catapulted into a journey of discovery and action-packed adventure in the imaginary world that was her sister’s refuge. In this high-octane dramatic comedy laden with homicidal fairies, nasty ogres, and ’90s pop culture, acclaimed playwright Qui Nguyen offers a heart-pounding homage to the geek and warrior within us all.” – Concord Theatricals

How Would You Like To Save 17 trees? |
|
|
Recycle one ton (1 ton=2000 pounds (0.9 metric ton) of paper.
Most families do not use a ton of paper a year, but Americans DO receive about 11,000 tons of junk mail every day--and it all could be recycled. Recycling a ton of paper will save about 3 cubic yards (2.3 cubic centimeters) of landfill space and 7,000 gallons (26,500 liters) of water used in the processing of new paper. Recycling paper would save enough electricity to heat your home for half a year, while preventing an additional 60 pounds (27 kilograms) of air pollutants in the environment. Recycling glass and metal also helps the environment!!

Nothing...because they do not have any teeth! Well, then, how do they eat? Believe it or not...they use their 2 foot tongues!
It is not impolite for anteaters to stick out their tongues, and when one does, it licks up about 35,000 ants and termites in one day. These incredible creatures can flick their tongues more than 160 times a minute when catching lunch!!!
Even though the giant anteater has 4-inch-long claws, it does not destroy the anthills or termite mounds it invades. Instead, it just opens them enough for its tongue to reach in, feeds on a few, and comes back another day for seconds! |
