Veterans Day is a time for us to pay our respects to those who have served. For one day, we stand united in respect for you, our veterans.
This holiday started as a day to reflect upon the heroism of those who died in our country's service and was originally called Armistice Day. It fell on Nov. 11 because that is the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. However, in 1954, the holiday was changed to "Veterans Day" in order to account for all veterans in all wars.

We celebrate and honor America's veterans for their patriotism, love of country and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.

Stacey students and staff honored our nation’s veterans at a ceremony in the gym on Friday morning. The AFROTC from the John Jay HS color guard presented the colors followed by an amazing rendition of the Star Spangled Banner by the Stacey choir. Mr. Shelby served as MC; after welcoming guests and veterans, he introduced the guest speaker: CMSgt Learie R. Gaitan of the Air Force Services Center. Chief Gaitan told a touching story of his early days in the military and urged the students keep perspective on their life and thank those around them.  The Stacey band then played a medley of military themes from the US Navy, Army Air Force & Marines, with veterans standing when their branch’s song was being played. Mr. Shelby introduced current Lackland ISD employees who are veterans of the US Armed Forces:

Mr. Alfredo Concha, US Navy, 22 years

Ms. April Garcia, US Air Force, 10 years

Mr. Robert Gordon, US Air Force, 26 years

Ms. Elizabeth Morales, US Air Force, 24 years

Ms. Jania Nicholson, US Navy, 3 years

Ms. Alejandra Parham, US Army 4 years

Mr. Larry Reliford, US Army, 20 years

Dr. Burnie Roper, US Army, 35 years

Mr. Greg Torre, US Army, 21 years

Ms. Pam Torre, US Air Force/Air Guard and US Army/Army Reserves, 23 years

Mr. Shelby pointed out that LISD employees accounted for a total of 188 years of military service. He thanked the veterans for their service and invited all to the Lyon Center for refreshments after the ceremony.

Interview with Mr. Bermea

By Jacob Gamboa, senior

Jesus “Eddie” Bermea is a new addition to the Stacey Jr./Sr. High teaching staff.

Image

1. What is your official job title/occupation?

6-8 Robotics/Keyboarding Teacher

2. Is this your first teaching job, if not, where before?

Not my first teaching job.  I was a teacher/coach (soccer) for San Antonio ISD for 16 years before coming to Lackland ISD.  I was also a software tester before I became a teacher.

3. What made you want to teach at Stacey Jr./Sr. High School?

The opportunity to teach in a smaller school setting.  I came from a junior high that had 950 students!

4. What is your vision as a teacher?/what defines success?

My vision as a teacher is to expose students to technology (coding and technical skills) at the middle level.  Not many school districts offer coding classes at the junior high level.  Success to me is when one is content for whom they are or have become.

5. Was teaching your first choice for a job?

Before I taught I was in the business sector.  I have worked for several fortune 500 companies in relation to jobs in electronic banking and software development. Thanks to those job opportunities, I have met two billionaires (Charles Butt, HEB) and Lowry Mays (Clear Channel Communications, now known as iHeart radio).

6. Where were you born?

I was born in San Antonio, Texas.

7. Are you familiar with military life?/where did you grow up or live before?

Many family and friends have served in the military including my brother-in-law currently in the Marines.  I lived in Mexico from the ages of 1 to 5 years old.

8. Where did you attend college?

Attended San Antonio College and transferred to Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio (c/o 1999), BS in Computer Information Systems.  I have a master's degree from Webster University in Computer Information and Management Systems.

9. If you could visit any place in the world, where would it be?

I would visit Spain.  My last name is from a small town in Spain called Bermejo.  Other family members have found our family crest there and I would like to make that journey as well.

10. If you were to describe yourself in one word, what would it be?

Loyal

Bonus: Is there anything else you would like us to know about you?

I have been married to my wife for 17 years and have a soon to be a 15 year old daughter.  I have known my wife since we were in 6th grade, but not high school sweethearts.  I love to fish and hunt when given the chance and love to spend time with my family.

THANK YOU Mr. Bermea!

Stacey Spanish Club at this year's Muertos Fest at Hemisfair Park.  They built an altar for el Día de los Muertos and competed against other schools in the city.  Afterwards, they had some fun at the Yanaguana Garden and playground.

Big Week for S2S

by Sam Gagnon, senior

Image

The week of October 28th was a big one for S2S. Starting on Wednesday, the student to student-organized club (S2S) hosted another one of its famous new student socials. This social was all based around the closest holiday, Halloween. By doing different activities, as well as playing a variety of games, S2S was able to create a warm and friendly welcome to all the new Stacey students. The event stretched over learning lab and lunch, so many students were able to attend. The very next day S2S kept working as they traveled over to the Willie Cortez Senior Center. In the spirit of  Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) dancing procured many elder participants as everyone celebrated the holiday. Serving nachos, and playing volleyball was a nice change for the seniors at the center and many participated in several of the other activities, like coloring, or basketball. The photo booth along with all of its masks and other disguises was an enjoyable twist to a normal day in their lives.

To wrap up the week, on Friday, S2S began the candy buyback, an initiative where younger students can bring in candy from trick-or-treating in exchange for a healthier snack. All the donated candy goes to the soldiers currently deployed overseas.
