Every Day is a Day of Thanksgiving
With so much instability in the world and even in our own country, it may seem difficult to find much to be thankful for. But I still believe we are so blessed and fortunate to live in the United States of America. We are even more blessed here at Lackland ISD because we have the opportunity to educate the best students in the world! I am grateful to the parents of our students who have taken on the awesome mission of serving and protecting our great nation. As we move closer to the celebration of Thanksgiving and we take time to give thanks for the many blessings we enjoy, I would like to give thanks for the Lackland Independent School District Family, our wonderful students, and parents, and the Lackland AFB community. Our situation may not be the way we want it to be, but I am grateful that it is not as bad as it could be. Please take the time to give thanks for our family, friends, and our health (even if it is not the best). When we learn to give thanks, we learn to appreciate what we have just a little more. I wish everyone connected to the Lackland ISD Family a wonderful and safe Thanksgiving Holiday.

During the week of November 6-10, 2023 schools throughout DoDEA celebrated National School Psychology Awareness Week to highlight the important work our school psychologists and other educators do to help all students thrive.
This year's theme, "Together We Shine" is derived from how we see hope after several challenging years. We have all faced difficulties created by the pandemic, social injustice and inequity, economic stress, and challenges to mental and physical health.
Our hope is to connect with students and staff to highlight how each person's contribution to the collective can lead us forward. Just as we continue developing individually and with our own skills through collaboration and with support from others, we in turn can help others foster resilience and support those who need it.
Celebrate #SchoolPsychWeek on social media by highlighting the dedicated school psychologists supporting our students as they learn and grow.
National Association of School Psychologists
The National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) sponsors this national event. NASP represents and supports the profession of school psychology by advancing effective practices to improve students' learning, behavior and mental health, and by maintaining essential standards for ethics and practice.
Visit the NASP website for an excellent selection of adaptable resources to help you reach out to families, educators, administrators, and other members of your school community to make them aware of your activities during National School Psychology Week and your work around the year to help schools and students thrive.
What School Psychologists Do?
School psychologists provide direct support and interventions to students; consult with teachers, families, and other school-employed mental health professionals (i.e., school counselors, school social workers) to improve support strategies; work with school administrators to improve school-wide practices and policies; and collaborate with community providers to coordinate needed services. Visit DoDEA’s School Psychological Services to learn more.
Thank you to our team at Lackland ISD!

A student must be a senior and have a 93+ grade average throughout their high school career. Mia and Levi both were awarded Honorable Mention. As parents and educators, we share the goal of helping our children grow in school, at home, and in life. This includes recognizing individual growth, bridging differences, celebrating diversity, building positive relationships, providing opportunities to gain new knowledge and skills, and encouraging them to take on challenges and persevere when things get tough. Working together, we can support student growth through these formative years.
To highlight these goals, Lackland ISD will be participating in National School Psychology Week, November 6–10, 2023. The theme is “Let’s Grow Together!”
School psychologists are members of the school team who support students’ ability to learn and teachers’ ability to teach. We apply expertise in mental health, learning, and behavior to help children and youth succeed academically, socially, behaviorally, and emotionally. We provide direct support and interventions to students, such as learning assessments, academic and behavioral interventions, counseling, and social skills training. We also work with families, teachers, and other educators to improve school-wide practices and policies that help make our school community a safe, supportive, and welcoming space in which all children can thrive.
Reinforcing children’s natural and learned capacity for resiliency is a primary focus of National School Psychology Week and school psychologists’ role. As parents, you know your children best and are essential to this work. There are many ways to help children take on new challenges, learn new skills, and feel valued so that they can grow as individuals and contribute to a positive school community. You can:
1. Encourage your child to set goals and to map out a plan for achieving them.
2. Help your child internalize a sense that individuals grow in their own ways, often in their own time, through engagement and interaction with their surroundings, and any forward movement is a success.
3. Emphasize that learning and growing requires trying new things and that success comes from small steps to a long-term goal.
4. Help them work through setbacks or lack of self-confidence by helping them identify negative thoughts that may suggest concerns about their ability to be successful. Instead, encourage them to see the small steps they can take to overcome obstacles and succeed.
5. Praise attempts as well as success, and make sure that you focus on the effort put forth by your child. 6. Demonstrate through your own behaviors how to try new, challenging activities as a way to grow while also having fun. 7. Find ways to celebrate diversity and accept others or take steps with your child to actively learn about others that are different from you.
8. Model the joy of learning by reading about a variety of topics with your child and let them know that you, too, are learning new things. 9. Model perseverance and problem solving when faced with challenges or difficulties. 10. Help your child develop positive relationships with peers and adults and model respectful, caring behaviors with others.
Both Nancy Garcia and Gentry Ghandour are your school psychologists. We look forward to working with you at Lackland Independent School District so that we can help your child grow together! |

“One Pill Kills” is set up across the state to educate Texans on how to prevent, recognize, and reverse fentanyl poisonings. Students and families need to know that other drugs may contain a deadly level of fentanyl. You cannot see, taste, or smell it. It is almost impossible to tell if another drug is laced with fentanyl unless tested with a fentanyl testing strip. Parents, please see the fliers attached that gives information about fentanyl and it’s affects.
