In accordance with Public Law 98-144 1983, the third Monday of January commemorates the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as a federal holiday. This year’s observance is Monday, 15 January 2024.
Dr. King’s most famous message, “I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up, and live out the true meaning of its creed: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal,” touched the hearts of millions and still echoes in the minds of many today. Dr. King’s influence was a critical factor in such milestone legislation as the Civil Rights Acts of 1964 and the Voting Rights Acts of 1965. His promotion of nonviolent civil disobedience led to his bestowment of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, making him the youngest recipient of that award. Dr. King’s focus on “the content of our character,” as the goal of human interaction and judgment above immutable characteristics of race and skin color is still as pertinent today as it was in the summer of 1963.

NATIONAL LAW ENFORCEMENT APPRECIATION DAY
Law Enforcement Officers of every rank and file have chosen a profession that puts their life on the line every day for their communities. They've answered a call to public service that is demanding and often unappreciated.
From local, state, and federal, their duties command dedication. The jobs are often thankless and take them away from their families for long hours. Rarely do they know what their days have in store for them. Often law enforcement are the only paid emergency resource a community has. More often they work in coordination with other local, state, and federal organizations to make communities safer. On National Law Enforcement Day, we have an opportunity to thank them for their service and offer a token of respect. |

Stacey Flashback: Adriene Via
by: Audrey Upton, 9th grade |
|
|
This is Adrienne Via. She went to Stacey 7 years ago, graduating in 2017. She is now a kindergarten teacher in North Carolina. When did you go to Stacey? I went to Stacey for my junior to senior year. (2015 - 2017.) What are some of your favorite memories of going to school here?
My favorite memory was our senior trip to a small amusement park, I can't remember the name. We also went to Big Lou's pizza. I also have so many fun memories from Mr. Keller's, Ms. Rabidas's, Mr. Richard's, and Mr. White’s classes. They were great educators who helped shape the educator that I am today!
What was your favorite class while at Stacey? My favorite class was definitely yearbook class with Mr. Keller, DUH!!
Where did you go to college and what was your major?
I went to Northwest Vista for my first 2 years. Then, I went to East Carolina University for my last 2 years. I majored in Elementary Education with a minor in Psychology. :) I am glad I started at a community college because I got to knock out a lot of the general education classes for much cheaper than it would cost at a university. I graduated in Spring 2022.
Where do you currently live? I live in New Bern, North Carolina. :) Where do you work? I work at an elementary school in Vanceboro, NC. I am a kindergarten teacher. This is my second year teaching. :) Are you still in contact with any of your former classmates? Yes!! I still talk to a lot of my friends from high school. It's so crazy seeing how much we have all grown up in the past couple years. If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go? I would go back to Alaska. I lived there in elementary and middle school. Where have you all lived?
I have lived in Japan, North Carolina, Virginia, Alaska, Hawaii, and Texas. Do you have any advice for the current Stacey seniors?
Enjoy your time with your friends and soak it all in. It goes by so fast. Try your best to not focus on the negatives of high school. I don't remember silly little dramas from high school, but I remember all the laughs and memories with my friends.
Do you have anything else you would like to say?
Some people may not like how small of a school it is, but looking back it was an amazing thing! We all were so close and got to know each other so well - as well as the teachers! I am in connection through Facebook with so many of my teachers from that school still to this day.
THANK You Adriene! |

Spring Assessments *Assessments for Gifted and Talented will begin this month for Kindergarten students who submitted a referral by the due date of November 30, 2023.
*Assessments for other students will follow by grade level. Icon of the Month-Over Time |
|
|
|
The "Over Time" icon encourages students to examine a topic over multiple time periods. Don't just make a list of changes! Instead, add layers of complexity by comparing and contrasting two or three topics over the same time periods, offer observations and explanations, or consider hypothetical changes for the future! Sentence Starters for Over Time: What aspects of the past affect _____ in the present, and how will it possibly be affected in the future? How has our understanding of _____ changed over time? How does the passage of time affect our study of _____? What aspects of the past affect _____ in the present, and how will it possibly be affected in the future? How has our understanding of _____ changed over time? How does the passage of time affect our study of _____? |
