FREE LUNCH & BREAKFAST FOR ALL LISD STUDENTS DURING THE 2021-2022 SY LISD students will receive free lunch and breakfast meals during the 2021- 2022 school year with special funding authorized by the United States Department of Agriculture. For meals to be free for students, they must be compliant with USDA regulations. Second meals and a la carte items are available for purchase. Research shows students learn better when they are well nourished. Healthy eating has been linked to higher grades, better memory, more alertness, faster information processing, and improved health leading to better school attendance. We encourage our students to join us for well-balanced, free meals in one of our cafeterias every school day. Menus are available online at: https://www.lacklandisd.net/departments/operations/child-nutrition-services.

There are three teams this year, and grades 7-12 are welcome to join. Mr. Kinsey is the amazing robotics coach for all these teams. He has dedicated hundreds of hours to helping students grow throughout the years! If you know Mr. Kinsey, or ever have the chance to meet him in the future, make sure to give him a big “THANK YOU!”
What is robotics: Robotics is a field of study that includes computer science, mechanical engineering, and electronics. Stacey offers robotics classes for high school students as an elective. Stacey also supports an after-school competitive robotics program. How long has Stacey had a robotics program: Stacey’s competitive robotics program began over 15 years ago. The Bots in Blue era was established 5 years ago and has been expanding ever since. What is the purpose/goal of robotics: The purpose of the after-school program is to make positive memories through making new friends and sharing fun experiences. How long does robotics last: There are three competition “seasons” with different tasks and different robots for each competition. The BEST robotics season is 6 weeks, the FTC season is 12 weeks long, and the FRC season is also 12 weeks long. If the teams advance to regional, state, and international competitions, the season will be extended for those. What are some skills that students take away: The students who participate learn the “soft skills” of interpersonal communication, leadership, time management, and responsibility. Students also learn marketable skills such as coding, engineering, electronics, and project management. What teams does robotics have this year: BEST: High School Only FTC: Team 19918 Robo-Eagles (grades 7-8), Team 3296 Bots in Blue (grades 9-12), and 18519 Team Marvel-us (all female grades 7-12) FRC: Team 3545 Bots in Blue (grades 9-12) What are the kids doing during the week to prepare for the competition days: Besides eating breakfast tacos and drinking Dr. Pepper, the teams design, build, program and refine robots through testing and practice. How many competitions do you have a year: BEST: 1 regular season local competition and possible State Championship in Frisco, TX, FTC: 3 regular season local competitions and possible regional championship, state championship in Dallas, and International championship in Houston, FRC: 2 regular season 3 day competitions in various cities around Texas, possible state championship and international championship. What are some of the students favorite things to do: Eat, dance, spend time with friends, and make robots.
On September 11, four members of the Stacey High School band competed at the Region Jazz auditions held at Jourdanton High School. Jeran Smith earned a second chair spot on trombone and advanced to the Area contest. Levi Woodbury earned a spot as the alternate on bari sax. Janessa Smith was named alternate on tenor saxophone. Lauren Sawvel was also alternate on trumpet. Congrats to these musicians on this honor!
New Schedule Opinions by: Grace O'Brien, 11th grade Noah - 8th grade Hannah - 10th grade Calie - 11th grade Naomi - 12th grade The new schedule for the 2021 school year has been a big change for everyone. Class length is the most impactful change, with classes only being 49 minutes long instead of last year's 90 minutes. Learning Lab has also been removed from the schedule, to make room for the new 8-period days. Most students, both new to Stacey and long-time Eagles, have opinions and thoughts about the change.
8th grader Noah Morales, 10th grader Hannah Darity, 11th grader Calie Ivy, and 12th grader Naomi Sater were all asked for their opinions on the new schedule and its impact.
How long have you been at Stacey? Noah (8) - I've been at Lackland for 6 years and at Stacey since sixth grade. Hannah (10) -This is my third year Ivy (11) - I recently moved to San Antonio and started going to Stacey last semester. Naomi (12) - About 3 years
Do you find it easier to learn in your classes with this new schedule? Are 8 period days better than 4 period days? Noah (8) - I believe that the new 8 class schedule is a lot better because we get faster classes which makes everything less stressful, as well as classes being a reminder because you have them every day. Hannah (10) - Absolutely not, because I can't retain everything that my teachers are trying to teach me Ivy (11) - I actually find it more difficult with the 8 period schedule. While I slightly feel more alert, the shortened classes also make me feel more rushed. Sometimes it feels like I’m not retaining any of the information that is being taught. Naomi (12) - It’s quite hard to learn with 8 period days. The classes are too short and its quite hard to do seven pages of homework, all from different classes, and projects that will be due the next day.
Is there any particular reason why you like or dislike this new schedule? Hannah (10) - I don't like it because I have homework for all 8 classes, and they can't teach as much as they could in the 4 period days, so it feels rushed. Ivy (11) - I don’t like that we don’t have a learning lab. Personally, I know that a lot of people including myself have obligations after school, but still want to do extracurriculars such as drama club. Without a learning lab there is no time to do both, which seems unfair to both the students, and teachers holding those extracurricular clubs(which now have a significantly lower number of students). Naomi (12) - The homework. I’ll get homework from seven classes that are two pages or longer.
What do you think are the pros and cons of having this schedule versus the last one? Noah (8) - The bad stuff for this schedule is the lunches confuse me, but the cons for last year is the classes were so long that sometimes I would fall asleep and you only had the classes twice or thrice a week so you forget or don’t learn enough then you fail in the end. Hannah (10) - I think some cons are obviously they can't teach more and it's more for the students, but i’m able to see my teachers more often Ivy (11) - I do believe that this new schedule is beneficial in other ways. For example, I said before that I feel more alert in class. There is no extra time that may feeling boring to some students, and I’m sure that many students now also feel more alert. Naomi (12) - I’m guessing the pro is that some new students feel comfortable with this schedule. However, there are more cons. The time to get to class to class is very short, there is too much homework that’s due the next day, and people would get tired by their 6th class
Do you think homework/clubs will be impacted by this new change? How so? Noah (8) - I don’t think things with clubs will change because they’re AFTER school, but homework will be impacted since you have to get all homework done in a matter of 5 or 6 hours, and we’ve all got other stuff to do, but I think that just improves our sense of responsibility Hannah (10) -Yes, because now students have homework for classes that's due the next day, and will have less time for clubs and sports Naomi (12) - Yes, because people will be tired by the time the clubs start. People would not want to do their homework.
A Spanish town: San Antonio
In 1718, an expedition from Mexico came to the San Antonio River. This expedition brought people to start a mission and a presidio. Later, the Spanish government decided to send some settlers to establish a town nearby. The town was planned before the settlers arrived. The Spaniards planned towns carefully. First, they looked for water. Water was needed for people, animals, and crops. They chose a place that was near a river or a lake.
Next, the leaders made a map of the land. They planned where where the plaza (town square) would be. They always made a plaza in the center of their towns. This was a gathering place for the residents and visitors to meet and talk and enjoy the scenery. The leaders of the town drew a plan for canals which would bring water from the river to their homes and fields.
Finally, the government asked families to come and settle. Settlers were given money, supplies, and free land. This is how the the Spanish people from the Canary Islands came to live in San Antonio in 1731. The called their town Villa de San Fernando de Bejar.
